    Great video. I've just returned a brand new NZ7 as I had some lens focus issues. It just wasn't sharp across the screen compared to my N5. Found a Sony XW7000 refurb with warranty and just a few hundred hours of use for £2000 less than the new NZ7 so I'm going to give that a go. Really looking forward to trying it out.

    I'd love to see the Sony compared to the NZ8... 🤔
    The NZ7 is still a great projector but the NZ8 has even better contrast, better optics, is brighter and has the full 4 way eShiftX. Plus the cinema filter too. I think it's the sweet spot for the NZ lineup.
    The NZ8 should give the 7000ES a serious run for its money (or beat it)
    Thanks for this comparison 👍🏼

      Yeah the NZ8 or NZ9 would have been more realistic. The NZ7 should have been compared to the 6000 or 5000 but he couldn’t get the NZ9 for a more fair comparison.
      At least this is not a fake comparison like that AV dealer tried to do when the new Sonys were announced.

    Great video, but I always have the same takeaway with these: we have lost exact calibration with the arrival of 4K BD and HDR. Too much bullshit needed in general that alter the image and distances us from the reference. This gets worse with multiple competing HDR formats, which have metadata BS worsening calibration. The pinnacle of image accuracy was 1080p BD and reference plasma TVs. No moving target EOTFs, no BS HDR, true RGB emissive pixels without stupid white pixels. The inclusion of the latter destroys mathematical possibility of an accurate picture. In addition to this we have the marketing BS of brightness with HDR that’s totally unnecessary but cheap to do. People don’t always know that the image quality benefit is expanded color volume. But that could have been implemented properly, without the stupidity of what we have as HDR today. One pays top dollar for display devices and have to fidget around with settings that depend on the material displayed. This is wrong. I for one despise anything that alters the foundation and most important aspect of a reference image; black level and above black shadow detail. Currently HDR is like an audio format that wants to portray explosions like reality. No, thank you, I don’t want to experience a shell shock…

    Thanks Shane, would love to see the Sony with a lumagen doing the HDR lifting. I previously had a Sony 760 moving to a jvc nx9, both paired with the lumagen 5348, the JVC blacks were the decision maker for me.

  • @Luminated67
    @Luminated67 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    On my N5 the Theatre Optimiser I set it on LOW which is probably the equivalent to -2 on the NZ7. If left in this setting you calibrate the brightness and contrast which I did and I genuinely haven’t had to tweak between movies since.
    Would have been interesting to see how maybe the NZ9 compared as it’s priced similarly and has the better lens and comparable light output.
    A personal thing but I think the added black levels on the JVC make the images better but I can understand someone else preferring a slightly crisper image instead.

  • @keepingupwiththejones2933
    @keepingupwiththejones2933 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Shane's comments about the sharpness and picture quality are accurate. The JVC is just a tad bit softer. Sony really has the crisper more detailed image.

      In fairness though the NZ7 is not the 7000’s primary competition… that would be the NZ9 with its better lens or compare the 6000 to the 7 or 8 since they closer in price.

    Thank you for this excellent comparison of these two premium brands! I believe you did not enable the XW7000ES's exclusive Live Color Enhancer, so other than the XW7000ES' higher peak luminance capability, I believe this review would be very much like the XW6000ES vs, JVC's NZ7 and they are in the same price category.

    I enjoyed the comparrison. Both appeared to show a very reapectable image. Personally, looking at the video on an oled I thought the jvc looked better, with better black levels apart from the cockpit scene. The sonys black looks elevated, but is def sharper. Would have loved to have seen a claibrated shootout between both. Auto cal with spider x offers a great quick and cheap calibration. Unfortunately as a gamer no hdmi 2.1 i could never consider the sony. I found the video very useful and helpful. It helped me decide to get an nz7 which arrives next week.

    The JVC NZ8 is in the Sony XW7000 price class and is clearly better. So if you have either budget, do get the JVC. I have seen the JVC NP5, Sony XW5000 and JVC NZ8 (all calibrated) at a dealer in the Netherlands, and in my budget I liked the NP5 better over the XW5000 as it’s a more natural picture with great HDR. I’ve heard, if we’re talking about the same event, that the settings were pretty much out of the box. But one thing readily apparent with the new Sonys is that historical best practices settings will lead to unsatisfactory results. But if you set it up to set contrast and brightness properly, all that Sony goodness comes back. Sony would be well advised to update their default settings. They are leading to an impression that is not great out of the gate.

    I understand that in your comparison, on the XW7000, the "HDR Enhancer" parameter is OFF, the laser dynamics is on FULL, the RC on OFF, and the HDR contrast at maximum, but with the contrast enhancer on OFF. These settings have the effect of completely killing the HDR rendering of the XW7000.
    The test should be repeated by setting the HDR contrast to 85, the HDR Enhancer to maximum, the laser dynamics to OFF (or limited), and the RC to 40.

    Not dissing your video but a fairer comparison would be the NZ8/3100 or the NZ9/4100 against the XW7000 since the prices are more in line with one another. I understand you did the video based on the availability of product.
    As a 3100 owner I agree that HDR optimizer is still not a set it and forget it feature. It all depends how accurate the metadata is on the content. Plus some content producers are still actually mastering for 4000+ nits when no typical consumer display is anywhere near that capability.
    Also after being victim of a Sony SXRD projector panel degradation I’m not touching a Sony again until there’s conclusive evidence that it has been resolved.

      Sony's new Native 4K SXRD panel that was designed and built for the new XW line up fixed the issue that was on the older models. You also have to appreciate Sony's X1 processor that is the same processor that is packed in Sony's very well respected $80,000 VPL-GTZ380. I also like how very quiet all of the new Sony XW operate and the excellent new ACF lens that delivers a very accurate sharp image across the entire screen. With all this said please know that I love JVC's NZ line and we are very proud factory direct JVC dealers. You can't make a mistake on either brand and each model can be selected to match every users use case and budget.

      The film industry has used Sony cameras for over 25 years. There is a very cinematic look to a projected image from a Sony product. The HDR tone mapping and black levels are not acceptable at the price points being asked.

      @@keepingupwiththejones2933 I have yet to see anyone have that problem especially since these projectors haven't even been out a year. I've seen no one complain about that problem even with the previous generation Sony's. Even my 5 year old 1080p Sony is still working great and hasn't degraded in the least. It's got 12,000+ hours on it and has gone through 3 bulbs.
      If people are going to complain about this supposed problem, then talk about the symptoms, and how long it took before you even noticed it. So far, no actual owners who have experienced that problem even post in these comment sections. It's mostly people parroting something they heard on some forum. You know, "he said, she said".

    I won't pay more money to get horrible black levels on the Sony. The JVC is a far bettwr machine and for the money it's a no brainer. Next to colour accuracy contrast is a huge thing for me.

    If a single projector costs as much as a very good home theater setup including seating, paint, cables etc, its not worth it. Hell even the jvc is pushing it.
