      Have yall looked into a vacuum chamber. My old boss has one and we used it a lot on chicken rabbit deer vegetables etc etc. It worked awesome plus the bags are even cheaper. We used those same heat bags but the chamber is quicker and easier.

    Thank you so much for the teaching that you do. Off to plant some more. Have had a wet cold spring and have little in the ground. Got to get a move on. I wait to see your channel everyday. Was outside and thought you would have yours up. You are so right about the food savors. Love mine but any moisture and they don't see correctly. God bless you both

    That is an awesome instructional video! The previous owners of our farm sells meat and whenever we bought chickens or rabbits from them it was prepared the same way you guys were doing it. Plus it was cool knowing that those chickens and rabbits came from our new home. Now I just have to learn how to clean and prep the chickens!!

    Here at Dragon Hill Farm we have been doing chickens for about 4 years now. We've always dipped and hand plucked and this year will see the arrival of a tub style chicken plucker. In the past we used a vacuum sealer and while it worked ok it was not very good for packaging chickens we parted out. It sealed fine but it drew the bags and meat into all sorts of odd shapes which made placing in the freezers very difficult. It was sort of like trying to stack beach balls! The bags look like a better way of doing this. I like the labels too as it always helps to know when an item was placed in the freezer. Thanks for all your great information.

    I'm glad I'm not the only one that can't get those stupid food sealers to work. When you're working with a large amount of food and it takes 5 times longer than its supposed to you just want to throw the thing out the window. Thanks for a wonderful alternative. Definitely will be investing in shrink wrap... BTW love the shirt!

    I love my Food Saver Vacuum sealer but found that it was difficult to seal fresh chickens and when it does seal the seal sometimes fails. The easiest way to vacuum seal fresh chicken is to freeze it first and the chicken will vacuum seal. After watching your videos I will be trying the shrink bags for chickens.

    Fold a paper towel into a strip that fits across the top of bag and put it about 3” inside the bag. This holds the moisture away from top of bag when pulling a vacuum. This worked well when packaging rabbits

    I saw today Sarah that you wear sunglasses, great. I hope Kevin does also, for the number of hours you guys are out in the sun. I was the only one out of my husband and parents, who always wore sunglasses and I often got ribbed over it. Five decades on, I am the only one to not have eye issues. Either cataract or Macular Degeneration. My husband's issues have actually been worse. My eye specialist has said that it has only been due to constantly wearing polorized sunglasses, that I have avoided any eye conditions. We never think of something so simple throughout our life times, being so many important. So maybe even get your girls to wear sunglasses when outdoors at home with you. Helping around the homestead. Really, we need to be wearing them anytime we are outdoors. Living in Australia, we are always reminded to be sun smart.

    I usually watch all of your videos and somehow missed this. I consideres buying a vacuum sealer but the cost turned me off. I ordered the Texas shrink bags and used them yesterday. The size I ordered barely fit my 6lb chickens which was perfect because the bags do not shrink a lot. They worked fine. Rather then using labels we used a sharpie permanent marker to list the date and weight.

    Shirnk bags work the best when selling. However for your own use to save $ I wrap them first in plastic wrap then frezzer paper just cooked a whole chicken done in 8/14/2015 no freezer burn and cooked juicy.have given a few to other people no complaints

    It works better cutting a small 1/4" hole in the bag near the breast prior to dunking, instead of using a straw. Then putting your label over the hole. It ensures no air whatsoever gets back into the bag.
    Great video!

  • @josephauld6565
    @josephauld6565 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    We would put a paper towel folded up long ways between the chicken and the sealing edge . The paper towel would hold the blood or water long enough to seal the bags

    You should be putting your finger over the hole in the straw after it's shrunk down to keep air from going inside while you zip the tie tighter.

  • @steveelkins52
    @steveelkins52 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks, that was really interesting. You could form the zip tie into a circle first, just pushing the tail of the zip into its clip, then it would be easy to slip over the straw one handed. Is it necessary to chil the birds in iced water for 24 hours prior to packing, or is it something you just do?

  • @backtobasicstipswithtomrib19
    @backtobasicstipswithtomrib19 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you have a small freezer lay a lath or 1x2 across the first layer and your birds will freeze fine with the added air space

      Before the advent of shrink and vacuum pack we used to wrap our meat in several layers of wet cotton cloths then place in the freezer. The water acts as a barrier against freezer burn. You can wrap over that in butcher paper for added protection and safer handling .
