We used to raise chickens when I was a kid. None of them ended up cooked and on our table. Instead, they all ended up with names and some of them lived 20 ish years 😂
Of all the homestead channels I'm subscribed to, this is absolutely my favorite!

As someone whos raised a few batches of birds you did a thorough job. Only thing i would add is the heat lamps have potential to be a fire hazard and as a cautious person i would secure them with wire not twine. Not only could you lose all your birds but also the building. Be well.
Yep my nephew lost a dog house due to heat lamp. The dog got out.
We always used a kiddie pool as our initial brood space.

Don’t get discouraged if a few die. Natural selection or set up needs improvement. I get 35 chicks and usually loose 1or 2 within the 1st few weeks. Occasionally none. Happy farming everyone 👋
We were losing 4 a week. Adults too. I thought they had gotten into a feed bin the kids didn't close properly and were eating themselves to death. Turned out to be a Gila monster lol. Idiot ex roommate killed it instead of relocating it like he claimed.

I just watched this for entertainment. This felt like a documentary almost, the guy in the video (didn’t catch his name) he is very good at showing and teaching in a simple manner. This makes it real interesting, good work!
Meat Chickens is a great name for a punk band
We got our meat chick last week and my wife's ready to get rid of them. We got about 100. She just got finished saying "No one has that many."
It’s worth it once you hv that meat in the freezer.. it’s a lot of hard work though I just did 125 and am doing 50 right now.. lots were for customers
We have a huge freezer completely full of chicken. We have about twenty eggs in the incubator that are of the same breed.

my cat really started looking around trying to find the birds when they were chirping as you were picking them up from the P.O.!
you should run the ropes for the lights to the outside so that you can adjust them without stepping inside!
Great video, it reminds me of my childhood. My dad had a chicken farm when I was little, many of childhood photos were basically me eating fried chickens. I miss playing with the chicks.

I've used pine needles for bedding. Its free from my yard and no chance of dust from wood chips.

All you need to grow crickets is heat, wood chips and water. You could start growing crickets soon before the chicks arrive.

That hatchery you deal with is obviously a good company. Not many places will add in a few extras just in case. Fantastic information. I was considering getting a handful of chickens (maybe 15 - 20), but this video made me realize how woefully unprepared I am for this.

One very important item you missed. Chicks can be carriers of anbacteria called Campylobacter, it's related to Salmonella. Hand washing is an absolute must. I would be extremely hesitant to allow young children to handle them.
all their children live with livestock. Just like a pool, and teaching a toddler to swim as a safety precaution, you teach from birth safety and good habits on a farm. Hesitancy is born of fear and I am sorry for any child raised on a farm that is not allowed to experience young spring life.
Government would like us all living in fear and hesitant to do or learn anything to rely solely on them. I love the freedom of danger and chance to make my own way.

Our Jumbo Cornish Cross Chicks come on the 13 of July. This will be our second time growing them. They were awesome the first time two summers ago. The first time we got 10 from Murray McMurray Hatchery by way of Ag Way. This time we ordered from the hatchery and are getting 15. Thanks Josh for the brush up on getting ready.

I am doing my first round of cornish crosses. I am not going to say I will never do them again and they are for food...but they are freaks of nature. I call them Frankenstein chickens. Yes, cost effective and all of that but I feel like it's some violation of nature. 👍🤯

In my experience the only time they are at risk of smothering each other is if they are overcrowded, you're scaring them or herding them, or if they are too cold... We usually have our brood chambers in the chickenhouses at about 90-95 degrees tops. And usually we drop it a degree per day about but these I'm talking about are the quick growing commercial type, where they are at about 6-7lbs in 5-6 weeks. So ideally raised chickens will grow a lot slower and healthier and will likely need to be warmer longer.
I agreed with everything you said except grass clippings. I lost a biddie once by feeding grass. He tried to swallow but could not break it off. He choked to death on it.

We add some electrolyte solution to the water as soon as we get them on day 1, maybe day 2. We collect the manure and the shavings to spread to on the corn in the garden. All that nitrogen rich manure is fantastic for corn!

I really want to raise some of these, but I don't have a place to brood that many. I would love to do 52 and have a chicken a week to eat all year. Last fall I did 10 Cornish crosses and even with just those 10 I had to clean the brooder daily.
Loved the vid, thanks. I was a little apprehensive about adding grit and grass too quickly so this helped answer that question. I really don't like heat lamps but I guess with 50-100 chicks there really isn't a better or economical choice. I use the heat plate brooders on 4 legs. The one I have is good for up to 20, but I cycle small batch for meat and egg layer replacements ATM.

I haven't seen baby chicks in forever. I loved watching you put them from crate into the roost. Also loved all the great details in case I ever get to raise some. I think 100 seems like a great way to create a percentage record. My idea is finding out how many you need to make sure you have a profit after all the costs to raise to market. Do you have any good ideas on that?

Great video! I only add a slash of apple cider vinegar to their water and on the first couple days a dap of molasses. Other than that, birds are pretty resilient.
What does the vinegar and molasses do
I am half terrified to order meat birds, concerned about the logistics of dressing out a lot over a few days. I have had good results with my egg layers.

This is probably a silly question but the delivery box appears to have some right-angle corners (though the outside corners have different angles). How do they not pile up and trample any chicks in those corners?
What feed do you give your meat chickens, what about your egg laying ladies? I remember hearing it on a different video but I can’t find it now. Thank you!

We are getting our second installment of meat chicks in August. I have an acre of bare dirt that I would love to put some grass or some kind of seeds down so I can run the chickens there. Any suggestions as to what to grow? Clover or a kind of grass maybe?
I bought a $10 bag of "throw and grow" deer food plot seed mix from the sporting section at Walmart. Now I have tons of clover growing all over my place.
My first thought was there going to jump up the walls and slide down in between the plywood and the studs

How much feed do you go through with 100 birds?
So why do you like the Rangers more than the Cornish crosses? I found last time I raised some that they aren’t really ready at 8-12 weeks, mine took 16-20 weeks to be worth the effort of butchering them and I didn’t have a lot of freezer space so I let half my first flock stay with my laying flock and they got BIG. So huge legs looked more like turkey legs and very large breasts, feeding them whatever was least expensive and when I could talk the local produce stand out of their trash I would throw that in there, they are a lot of corn, mostly cracked then whole deer corn didn’t seem to bother anything. I want to do it again, and maybe with Cornish crosses maybe half and half, maybe half Cornish cross and half ranger if they have a good reason to try them out.
does the wind bother new chicks?
Try raising pigeons instead or in addition to chickens. Probably have to wait for second or third generation on a good diet before they are good enough to eat.

Last week I called tractor supply and they said they got a double shipment in they have over 600 baby chicks not sure the kind . Does that make anyone nervous
Didn’t mention all the security needed from all the varmits or predators. Will the heat lamps start the wood chips on fire?
I was kind of wondering about that with the newspaper. I know they aren’t that hot, but newspaper is pretty flammable
How big is your brooder?
Putting down newspaper can cause spraddle leg (spelling) use paper towels instead :)
Using baling twine above a heat source does not seem safe to me. Chain would be a much safer choice.
