Priscilla Taylor I don’t think you have to take shots to visit. I think it’s as easy as getting the required visa if you need one, buying your plane ticket and then make the trip.

Enjoyed this interview. As an African American I lived in Japan for many years and this sounded similar. We called it heaven on earth. There was barely any racism at all as he said about Singapore and it was very clean and easy living. You didn't have to keep looking over your shoulder because you didn't experience crime and violence. The country had you on a natural high. There was always something fun to do and it was extremely peaceful, beautiful and pleasant
@fifikhalifa barry yes, to me it is feeling the presence of God. The peaceful countries operate on love and integrity and you feel the higher vibrations as opposed to a country that operates on hatred, racism, greed and materialism. The lower vibrational countries tend to be narcissitic and love war over humanity
At one time I thought I could achieve this feeling; state of living, in Africa...not so sure with all the changes taking place there. What you all are describing about Singapore is what my soul longs for. I never understood why we as a people feel we must stay in a land that oppresses us causing our daily existence to be depressing to the point of being physically sick...high blood pressure, heart disease, depression, etc. I always said God created this big ol' beautiful world, surely America is not THE best and only place we have to choose from!!
@@michellelove34 You're right. I have been back in America for over 30 years. When I first came back, I immediately felt darkness and the feeling hasn't changed. My soul longs for the same as yours. I spoke to a Japanese man in the comments regarding a scientific video on you tube a while back. He was so kind and welcoming. We discussed the topic back and forth a little and his whole treatment and kind words to me made me feel the joy I felt long ago when living there. Japan is called the Land of The Rising Sun and he let me know I was always welcome there. I would love to go to Africa as well and possibly live, but it's getting harder for me to see living out the rest of my life in the US. The only thing that seems to evolve rapidly here is fear, technology and machines over humanity. Not feeling that at all

Hello! I am Shawn from Singapore. Just wanted to say it is true to some extent that Singapore is pretty harmonious when it comes to racial harmony. The people are generally nice and sometimes more amazed at other nationalities visiting. However, the racism amongst the people of Singapore is definitely still there. It is harder to see because as Asians we tend to keep our thoughts and comments to ourselves, and there are acts of racism done, but more on the subconscious scale. Especially towards the minorities in Singapore. But really glad you enjoyed our city! :)
I visited Singapore in 1999. It was just starting to become a Powerhouse. It's amazing how much it is grown. I saw three black people while I was there and two of them were at the airport. I was by myself there. Lol!
@fried okra They never officially legalised brothels from what I know. But there are certain sections of it that are allowed to run under close monitoring for a long time.
In the 1980s, Singapore is alr considered 1 of the 4 powerhouses in Asia, alongside Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan (& japan)! And to think Singapore only got independent in 1965!!!
Love it in Singapore. So much to do there. Sentosa Bay for the beach life, Clark Quay for the tourist hot spots n shopping, and more. Chili crab out there is a must!!

Thank you for your kind words about Singapore. In Singapore, we have been taught from young, at home and esp in School, to be respectful of each other’s race, beliefs and cultural practices. We do not label each other by the colour of our skin like yellow or brown or black. Calling a person “black” esp is socially unacceptable and you will be get big backlash if it becomes public.
I especially like Singapore because it was easy to get around (metro) and the shopping 🛍 is so amazing and getting to Malaysia 🇲🇾 (north) and Indonesia (south) was easy... oh and the food is delish and the beautiful garden off orchard Road... He’s right it was so easy and I only visited for two weeks (one week each). Oh yes I forgot about the tee that says Singapore 🇸🇬 is a fine place... they fine you for: spitting, jaywalking, chewing gum etc. It’s a pretty clean environment and they don’t want to clean up after you, but if they have to, then you will face a hefty fine 🤔 just imagine that around the world 🌎
We are human beings after all. Having such harsh laws might sound cruel to those who live in the US or UK but to us, it's what keeps us feel mostly safe all the time. 💙
I'm sorry that you have so much misinformation about our country. Yes we do have laws against the things you mentioned but they are usually not heavily enforced. To my knowledge I have not heard of any friends getting fined for the things you mentioned.
Spitting is just unhygienic, there are trashcans every 50metres, no excuse to spit into a tissue and throw it into the bin, especially in a pandemic like now. Jaywalking is dangerous for both you and the driver, but its not enforced unless you are an idiot to jaywalk infront of a police car, however it doesnt make it a right thing to do.

After independence in the 1960s Singapore went to Jamaica to study what they were doing right. Copied it and took it back to Singapore. Now Jamaica need to go to Singapore and copy what they are doing right.
I understand that Singapore is a very multicultural country, Chinese, Malays and Indians. So I am sure that helps with why the racism is minimal there. As opposed to countries that are traditionally homogeneous, like Japan, Korea and China.
If you watch enough of this series, you'd realize that Japan, Korea and China are not that racist. Don't mistake curiosity for racism. A black or even white person might get stared at, but it's not out of hatred, it's because you are unique to them. Black people aren't being physically assaulted or even verbally harassed in those countries. But you go to a heterogeneous country like the U.S....good luck even getting a cab.
Back in 2005 I learned the Singaporeans do not count the workplace related deaths of Malaysians. Malaysians tend to be darker, whereas most of the Singaporeans are Chinese (much lighter skinned). there are prejudices all over the world. While no one was outright rude to me during my travels there, I was always being stared at, because I was such an oddity for them. What was nice is when I bumped into and had a 20 minute long conversation with to Nigerian men who were there for work.
It has nothing to do with population homogeneity but rather on the control by white supremacy. In south Africa during apartheid the whites were in command. Though they were a minority they oppressed and created a wonderful racism system.
Hmm I like that law of having to hire 5 Singaporeans to 1 foreigner. We need those laws in America especially in Black communities where Foreigners get kick backs for opening businesses.
Actually those laws exist in America, before you can hire a foreigner have to prove to the state department that you cant find locals to hire before they even allow you to hire anyone else and it cost a lot of money to bring people here to work.
Anglekan I suppose hire people from overseas to work in America so like yourself, also hire people to come and work here because no matter how much you are willing to pay there are some jobs Americans simply will not do, the same stipulations apply regarding hiring foreigners, the locals end up leaving the immigrants there so I just have to hire more immigrants so that I dont have shut my company down but the law does exist and this is not about legal immigration because unless you are Cherokee we kinda all came from somewhere and became locals.
I live in the Philippines over 20 years. Black Americans need to start their own businesses and take Super Majority & Political Control of their town, city, county, State and most important a Region of States. 8 States Southern Region
K. J. Falloon I work for and economic development agency and if those laws exist, they’re never ever enforced. I’ve seen so many companies get millions of free dollars to set up shop and create x amount of jobs. Then all they do is bring in foreigners, pay them ridiculous amounts which is above standard for the area. Locals are originally exited about the projects, but then then they end up getting priced out of everything because these strangers have come in with better paying jobs causing the cost of living to go up. It’s sickening.
there are many DIY shops here just not big big chains. there are some chain stores like "self-fix" but they are not massive like home depot. mostly DIY shops are mom&pop hardware shops dotted all around in the heartlands of the island.

Things that both foreigners and locals agree that Singapore is good at: 1. Very safe with very low crime rate. 2. Multi-racial country with minimal racism. 3. Cleanliness and much greeneries. 4. With english as our main language, its easier for foreigner to communicate here. 5. Extremely strict laws with ridiculously heavy punishment. One of the reason why crime rate here is low. Things in Singapore that people dislike: 1. Most expensive in the world to own a vehicle. (Largely due to COE) so the price is 2 to 5 times as expensive as any other parts of the world. 2. Expensive public housing that you technically don’t own because it has a public lease of 99 years until then they decide if they want to continue leasing out or smth else. 3. High living cost. 4. Major different rights between citizen, permanent resident and foreigner if you live here for a long period of time. 5. Dense population in a small country.
Not that much differences between Citizen and Permanent Residents. In fact I think sometimes PRs 90% same as Citizens and Still enjoy same benefits only VERY SLIGHTLY more expensive. Foreigners r the really major expensive difference
Leslie Speights please let me explain Singaporeans speak different chinese dialects too, other than mandarin For many years, we locals tend to speak casually adding some dialects into our English when we speak among ourselves This actually makes us feel comfy and easy If one speaks perfect English towards the other local,he will give the impression of showing off Its a matter of human relationship When one is in a job interview, or other important events, one would speak proper English I hope this helps to explain

As Singlish (Singaporean English) is a creole spoken in the casual domain, would this particular expat have any proficiency living there for almost a decade assuming he's made close relations? How much social distance is maintained linguistically? These are the type of questions that spring to my mind involving multilingual communication.
Today I’m a 71 year old Singaporean, I recalled clearly why? Our great late Prime Minister Minister Mr.Lee Kwan Yew, made so sure when we were even just toddlers understood ( maybe barely reaching 10 years old) made it crystal clear we’re not Chinese/ Malaya nor Indian we are all just one ie. “Singaporeans” we are all the same!! Yep!! I guess he made us all colored blind in a humane way😂.
On the commentary about how most Chinese neighbors may seem less friendly/chatty - just wanted to say that it's a pretty funny and sort of true observation. Don't take it personally. I'm a Singaporean of Chinese ethnicity, I think majority of the neighbors staying on the same level/floor of my HDB building are Chinese as well. But after staying here for 3 - 4 years, I still don't know the names of any of my neighbors. In my previous HDB home, my neighbour was a Malay family and we were neighbors for over 10 years, my parents and the neighbors were on first name basis and quite chatty with each other. It's nothing to do with racism, but sometimes people are just generally more reserved or rushing for work/school every time they step out of their homes.

I am Singaporean. I wouldn't say there is no racism. There are racism everywhere in any country, but what I would say is racism are constitutionally discouraged and at least it is not institutionalized. Cross the border to Malaysia, you have institutionalized racism where a particular race is given special privilege. Racism in Singapore do exist but not common and even if there is, it's the not as aggressive and confrontational type like those that happened in the West. There are bigger hardware stores with DIY tools or power tools but there are usually located in the residential or industrial estate (I am not talking abt Home-Fix or Self-fix ).
Ofcourse the particular race in malaysia is gonna get special privilege. It is a country specialize in that race only and it even says it in the country's name
darrendelong Racism that I experienced was more out of ignorance. Eg the old uncle taxi driver asking when I’m returning to Africa even though I was born in raised in London. After explaining that I’m only there because my skill set was difficult to come by and I’m training Singaporeans during my tenure you’d think he’d catch the drift that I’m adding to their society/economy (taxes and service payments). As for your jive at Malaysia, it was clear as day that you guys don’t like each other which is a crying shame. Malaysians are so welcoming, why can’t you just loosen the attitude towards each other? I find it really sad how Malaysians are treated so poorly in Singapore but then it’s the same for Filipinos, Indonesians and Bangladesh living and working in Singapore. I loved my experience in Singapore so much so that I’ve settled and have been living in S.E.A for the past decade.

At least there you can catch a breeze sometimes and the weather cools down a little bit in the winter. In Singapore, it's hot all the time. But trust, the culture, environment, and the food, etc make up for it. 😊

ok idk how I got here but I'm shocked. I'm an American road warrior camper, pick up the whole 9 I never had the desire to visit outside my country. Imagine if there was no racism in America..we would be much further along and would hv more time for fun and creativty and love towards each other. Hate reduces us down to animals and makes us blind to loving our neighbor as ourselves.
I think part of it is that Singapore, like many eastern Asian countries, is more collectively-focused than individualized like the US, so they are less likely to kick up dust about small things. Being obligated to others is not the bad thing it's painted to be; think of how life would be better if big companies felt obligated to their employees.

Many tourists were like quite worried about being fine as they were out on the streets. Your explanation puts them at ease to a certain extent. The comment about plainclothes arresting someone so fast is new to me. I have seen police arresting people and the process is actually quite drawn out. This is because they tend not to use force. They need like 4 to 6 officers to arrest an uncooperative perpetrator.
Some truth in that DIY statement - the so-called DIY stores do not stock good range of supplies. For the "hard-core" stuff, you need to go to where the local renovation contractors go for their supplies. It is possible to find what you need - you just need to know where. The only reason I am aware of this is because I asked my long-time renovation contractor where he gets all the stuffs I requested for, when I cannot find them in the DIY stores.

Enjoyed this interview. As an African American I lived in Japan for many years and this sounded similar. We called it heaven on earth. There was barely any racism at all as he said about Singapore and it was very clean and easy living. You didn't have to keep looking over your shoulder because you didn't experience crime and violence. The country had you on a natural high. There was always something fun to do and it was extremely peaceful, beautiful and pleasant
@fifikhalifa barry yes, to me it is feeling the presence of God. The peaceful countries operate on love and integrity and you feel the higher vibrations as opposed to a country that operates on hatred, racism, greed and materialism. The lower vibrational countries tend to be narcissitic and love war over humanity
At one time I thought I could achieve this feeling; state of living, in Africa...not so sure with all the changes taking place there. What you all are describing about Singapore is what my soul longs for. I never understood why we as a people feel we must stay in a land that oppresses us causing our daily existence to be depressing to the point of being physically sick...high blood pressure, heart disease, depression, etc. I always said God created this big ol' beautiful world, surely America is not THE best and only place we have to choose from!!
@@michellelove34 You're right. I have been back in America for over 30 years. When I first came back, I immediately felt darkness and the feeling hasn't changed. My soul longs for the same as yours. I spoke to a Japanese man in the comments regarding a scientific video on you tube a while back. He was so kind and welcoming. We discussed the topic back and forth a little and his whole treatment and kind words to me made me feel the joy I felt long ago when living there. Japan is called the Land of The Rising Sun and he let me know I was always welcome there. I would love to go to Africa as well and possibly live, but it's getting harder for me to see living out the rest of my life in the US. The only thing that seems to evolve rapidly here is fear, technology and machines over humanity. Not feeling that at all

Hello! I am Shawn from Singapore. Just wanted to say it is true to some extent that Singapore is pretty harmonious when it comes to racial harmony. The people are generally nice and sometimes more amazed at other nationalities visiting. However, the racism amongst the people of Singapore is definitely still there. It is harder to see because as Asians we tend to keep our thoughts and comments to ourselves, and there are acts of racism done, but more on the subconscious scale. Especially towards the minorities in Singapore. But really glad you enjoyed our city! :)
I visited Singapore in 1999. It was just starting to become a Powerhouse. It's amazing how much it is grown. I saw three black people while I was there and two of them were at the airport. I was by myself there. Lol!
@fried okra They never officially legalised brothels from what I know. But there are certain sections of it that are allowed to run under close monitoring for a long time.
In the 1980s, Singapore is alr considered 1 of the 4 powerhouses in Asia, alongside Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan (& japan)! And to think Singapore only got independent in 1965!!!
Love it in Singapore. So much to do there. Sentosa Bay for the beach life, Clark Quay for the tourist hot spots n shopping, and more. Chili crab out there is a must!!

Thank you for your kind words about Singapore. In Singapore, we have been taught from young, at home and esp in School, to be respectful of each other’s race, beliefs and cultural practices. We do not label each other by the colour of our skin like yellow or brown or black. Calling a person “black” esp is socially unacceptable and you will be get big backlash if it becomes public.
I especially like Singapore because it was easy to get around (metro) and the shopping 🛍 is so amazing and getting to Malaysia 🇲🇾 (north) and Indonesia (south) was easy... oh and the food is delish and the beautiful garden off orchard Road...
He’s right it was so easy and I only visited for two weeks (one week each). Oh yes I forgot about the tee that says Singapore 🇸🇬 is a fine place... they fine you for: spitting, jaywalking, chewing gum etc.
It’s a pretty clean environment and they don’t want to clean up after you, but if they have to, then you will face a hefty fine 🤔 just imagine that around the world 🌎

We are human beings after all. Having such harsh laws might sound cruel to those who live in the US or UK but to us, it's what keeps us feel mostly safe all the time. 💙
I'm sorry that you have so much misinformation about our country. Yes we do have laws against the things you mentioned but they are usually not heavily enforced. To my knowledge I have not heard of any friends getting fined for the things you mentioned.
Spitting is just unhygienic, there are trashcans every 50metres, no excuse to spit into a tissue and throw it into the bin, especially in a pandemic like now. Jaywalking is dangerous for both you and the driver, but its not enforced unless you are an idiot to jaywalk infront of a police car, however it doesnt make it a right thing to do.

I understand that Singapore is a very multicultural country, Chinese, Malays and Indians. So I am sure that helps with why the racism is minimal there. As opposed to countries that are traditionally homogeneous, like Japan, Korea and China.
If you watch enough of this series, you'd realize that Japan, Korea and China are not that racist. Don't mistake curiosity for racism. A black or even white person might get stared at, but it's not out of hatred, it's because you are unique to them. Black people aren't being physically assaulted or even verbally harassed in those countries. But you go to a heterogeneous country like the U.S....good luck even getting a cab.
Back in 2005 I learned the Singaporeans do not count the workplace related deaths of Malaysians. Malaysians tend to be darker, whereas most of the Singaporeans are Chinese (much lighter skinned). there are prejudices all over the world. While no one was outright rude to me during my travels there, I was always being stared at, because I was such an oddity for them. What was nice is when I bumped into and had a 20 minute long conversation with to Nigerian men who were there for work.
It has nothing to do with population homogeneity but rather on the control by white supremacy. In south Africa during apartheid the whites were in command. Though they were a minority they oppressed and created a wonderful racism system.

Hmm I like that law of having to hire 5 Singaporeans to 1 foreigner. We need those laws in America especially in Black communities where Foreigners get kick backs for opening businesses.
Actually those laws exist in America, before you can hire a foreigner have to prove to the state department that you cant find locals to hire before they even allow you to hire anyone else and it cost a lot of money to bring people here to work.
Anglekan I suppose hire people from overseas to work in America so like yourself, also hire people to come and work here because no matter how much you are willing to pay there are some jobs Americans simply will not do, the same stipulations apply regarding hiring foreigners, the locals end up leaving the immigrants there so I just have to hire more immigrants so that I dont have shut my company down but the law does exist and this is not about legal immigration because unless you are Cherokee we kinda all came from somewhere and became locals.
I live in the Philippines over 20 years. Black Americans need to start their own businesses and take Super Majority & Political Control of their town, city, county, State and most important a Region of States. 8 States Southern Region

K. J. Falloon I work for and economic development agency and if those laws exist, they’re never ever enforced. I’ve seen so many companies get millions of free dollars to set up shop and create x amount of jobs. Then all they do is bring in foreigners, pay them ridiculous amounts which is above standard for the area. Locals are originally exited about the projects, but then then they end up getting priced out of everything because these strangers have come in with better paying jobs causing the cost of living to go up. It’s sickening.

there are many DIY shops here just not big big chains. there are some chain stores like "self-fix" but they are not massive like home depot. mostly DIY shops are mom&pop hardware shops dotted all around in the heartlands of the island.

Things that both foreigners and locals agree that Singapore is good at:
1. Very safe with very low crime rate.
2. Multi-racial country with minimal racism.
3. Cleanliness and much greeneries.
4. With english as our main language, its easier for foreigner to communicate here.
5. Extremely strict laws with ridiculously heavy punishment. One of the reason why crime rate here is low.
Things in Singapore that people dislike:
1. Most expensive in the world to own a vehicle. (Largely due to COE) so the price is 2 to 5 times as expensive as any other parts of the world.
2. Expensive public housing that you technically don’t own because it has a public lease of 99 years until then they decide if they want to continue leasing out or smth else.
3. High living cost.
4. Major different rights between citizen, permanent resident and foreigner if you live here for a long period of time.
5. Dense population in a small country.
Not that much differences between Citizen and Permanent Residents. In fact I think sometimes PRs 90% same as Citizens and Still enjoy same benefits only VERY SLIGHTLY more expensive. Foreigners r the really major expensive difference

Today I’m a 71 year old Singaporean, I recalled clearly why? Our great late Prime Minister Minister Mr.Lee Kwan Yew, made so sure when we were even just toddlers understood ( maybe barely reaching 10 years old) made it crystal clear we’re not Chinese/ Malaya nor Indian we are all just one ie. “Singaporeans” we are all the same!! Yep!! I guess he made us all colored blind in a humane way😂.

On the commentary about how most Chinese neighbors may seem less friendly/chatty - just wanted to say that it's a pretty funny and sort of true observation. Don't take it personally. I'm a Singaporean of Chinese ethnicity, I think majority of the neighbors staying on the same level/floor of my HDB building are Chinese as well. But after staying here for 3 - 4 years, I still don't know the names of any of my neighbors. In my previous HDB home, my neighbour was a Malay family and we were neighbors for over 10 years, my parents and the neighbors were on first name basis and quite chatty with each other. It's nothing to do with racism, but sometimes people are just generally more reserved or rushing for work/school every time they step out of their homes.

I am Singaporean. I wouldn't say there is no racism. There are racism everywhere in any country, but what I would say is racism are constitutionally discouraged and at least it is not institutionalized. Cross the border to Malaysia, you have institutionalized racism where a particular race is given special privilege. Racism in Singapore do exist but not common and even if there is, it's the not as aggressive and confrontational type like those that happened in the West.
There are bigger hardware stores with DIY tools or power tools but there are usually located in the residential or industrial estate (I am not talking abt Home-Fix or Self-fix ).

darrendelong Racism that I experienced was more out of ignorance. Eg the old uncle taxi driver asking when I’m returning to Africa even though I was born in raised in London. After explaining that I’m only there because my skill set was difficult to come by and I’m training Singaporeans during my tenure you’d think he’d catch the drift that I’m adding to their society/economy (taxes and service payments). As for your jive at Malaysia, it was clear as day that you guys don’t like each other which is a crying shame. Malaysians are so welcoming, why can’t you just loosen the attitude towards each other? I find it really sad how Malaysians are treated so poorly in Singapore but then it’s the same for Filipinos, Indonesians and Bangladesh living and working in Singapore. I loved my experience in Singapore so much so that I’ve settled and have been living in S.E.A for the past decade.

At least there you can catch a breeze sometimes and the weather cools down a little bit in the winter. In Singapore, it's hot all the time. But trust, the culture, environment, and the food, etc make up for it. 😊

Imagine if there was no racism in America..we would be much further along and would hv more time for fun and creativty and love towards each other. Hate reduces us down to animals and makes us blind to loving our neighbor as ourselves.

I think part of it is that Singapore, like many eastern Asian countries, is more collectively-focused than individualized like the US, so they are less likely to kick up dust about small things. Being obligated to others is not the bad thing it's painted to be; think of how life would be better if big companies felt obligated to their employees.

The comment about plainclothes arresting someone so fast is new to me. I have seen police arresting people and the process is actually quite drawn out. This is because they tend not to use force. They need like 4 to 6 officers to arrest an uncooperative perpetrator.
Some truth in that DIY statement - the so-called DIY stores do not stock good range of supplies. For the "hard-core" stuff, you need to go to where the local renovation contractors go for their supplies. It is possible to find what you need - you just need to know where. The only reason I am aware of this is because I asked my long-time renovation contractor where he gets all the stuffs I requested for, when I cannot find them in the DIY stores.
