As y'all mentioned Chan in a mall that scene was in my head then on the screen. Whomever spliced that in, great job. Would love to see y'all cover some old school Martial Arts movies, maybe do a Bruce run, Jackie, Jet & then Donnie. There are some classics in the genre that I think the young ones of today may not know about.

Andy's such a tragic character. Right when he finally gets hope, talks to the group for the first time, gets to talk to Kenneth, all that, only for that to be when he gets bit.
In the dvd there is a short from Andy's perspective.

I think the reason the husband turned so quickly in the beginning is because he died quickly. He was bitten in a spot that would kill you almost instantly. If you get bitten in your arm or something you’ll probably die slower from the infection and then you turn.
Its also based on size. Luda's bite was small, as if the zombies teeth cut her like a knife would. So it took her 2 to 3 days to turn, while the Dad's bite happened when they got into the truck, and it was a bigger bite, so its assumed the Zombie latched on to him and was able to bite more, thats why he turned the same day, same for the Fat Lady. Michael probably would've survived until they reached the island, then he would've turned, considering how big his bite was. So if Lewis at the beginning had bit bitten in the same spot, but smaller, he would've probably survived with Anna, until the car crash, where he would've died and turned.

@@Burstify they made note that there was a LOT of blood. and he was malnourished already so he died very quickly because of that.
edit: i still think they should have told him to eat as much food as he wants because they have plenty.
they didn't but it would have been nice for his last moments to just care free shove food in his face.
That’s always what I thought he bleed out quicker as getting bitten on the hand is a slow spread
A couple fun facts...
1) The gas station explosion scene is a nod to the original movie, in which one of the characters describes witnessing the same thing. The helicopter flying overhead is also the same one used to get to the mall in the original.
2) Zack Snyder has a cameo as one of the soldiers at the US Capitol in the opening news montage.
I hope they watch that movie, it's a thousand times better.
@@TiredMoonRabbit I prefer the original 1978 Dawn of the Dead.... but I also prefer the remake of Night of the Living Dead from 1990 (doubly so because Romero didn't get shite from the original due to the missing Copyright notice). Day of the Dead stands on its own, partially because the "remake" of it wasn't a Romero movie.
@@IggyStardust1967 the night remake is actually the only version of that movie I have seen, which is funny in context, I actually really like that movie, a good example of how to do a remake without just doing the same thing/making a completely different movie.
What are you talking about “same helicopter”? The helicopter in the original was a Bell news copter and the one in this one was a sea stallion or similar model but definitely military.
@@turbopokey they're on about the one that flies over as the gas station explodes, that's the same as the helicopter from the original NOT the one that flies over when they're on the roof.
I remember in the DVD special features, there was two sort-of videos/short films: one about "Andy's Recording" while he was in the gun shop, and another was "We Interrupt This Program" (I believe it was called) about one of the news anchor who was reporting on the zombie spread. They were so good!
It was dope. Stuff like that is why people would buy DVDs. The extra features actually added to the damn movie. I miss that shit.

Have we watched the same film? This movie is a remake of a much better movie.
Rewatching this makes me wish Snyder would stop writing his own films. He's just not a good writer and his visual style is not enough to carry some of his worse story elements.

I hope they team up again. Not in Gunn’s DC but another one like this.

When I heard about this remake, I was pissed because the original is the GOAT in my opinion. I was shocked . I wish all remakes were this good.

It's funny that 2 of the most intense openings for movies ever are zombie movies - this and 28 weeks later
And they aired it on I think USA as a promo about a week before it came out. I grew up on Romero's zombie movies so I was already excited for this remake but seeing that opening took my hype to unprecedented levels. Might be the most excited I've ever been for a movie's premiere.

This was my intro to Zack Snyder. I saw it in theaters and it rocked my world. It was everything I wanted in a zombie film. I was really into zombies at the time.

Shipping containers (120 feet of steel x 20 = 2400 feet of steel wall cut per day 2 crews of 10/15 welling it up) would be to cut up for the steel for a perimeter fence & closing of unused doors/access tunnels etc... Make trucks into cutting/welding trucks park near the steel cut or weld move along... all without the need of venturing outside until fence/doors are sealed up... a Dozer would be a huge advantage for pulling/lifting the steel...
I was 13 when I saw this in 04’ and it was the absolute scariest movie I had ever seen. What made it horrifying was that this was the first time I had ever seen FAST zombies, and not just fast but absolutely agro.
But it was also funny at times like how they were shooting all the zombie celebrities.😂
After watching Shaun of the dead in 06’ (roughly same age 13 -15) I though Dawn of the dead was the same thing, it clearly was not the same thing 😂😂
Same! It sounds insane now, especially after the amazing “28” series cemented “fast zombies,” but this was really groundbreaking and shocking back in the day, seeing zombies that could actually run. Definitely shook up the genre in a great way (I also adore OG slow zombies too!) Fast zombies probably existed in fiction already, but this was definitely alot of people’s first time seeing it, and it la great🙂

@@Helldog6 I was there as a kid to see the original NOTD on TV, and watched the first Dawn in the best premiere venue ever: a midnight show in a mall theater. Snyder's reimaging had it's own tone which was fine. The most awesome pre-credits opening I've seen in a long time. But I grew with George Romero, and even got to talk with him at a con not long before he passed away. Sad, because we'd exchanged e-mail and promised to keep in touch.
Dawn of the dead (04) is my personal favorite zombie movie of all time. Some of my other favorites includes Shaun of the dead, Night of the Living dead (Og), Army of the Dead and Train to Busan.

I remember being so pissed that C.J. died. He was such a good guy, always trying to protect them. And Michael who is bit, stays until the very end. He should've been the one to stay behind and gave them a chance to get a way, leaving C.J. alive to help take care of the group. They could've really used C.J. since the only other good shot was Ving Rymes.
They would've died either way once they reached the island
@@Burstify maybe maybe not. They don't show them dieing. So it's up to the individual to make up what happened. And they could have very well got away as they were heading back to the boat. They went their because they were running out of fuel. So they could have easily have gotten away. I myself hate cliff hanger movies since it doesn't rap up anything and just leaves you wondering. Since it's eluded that they got away but their fates are just left in up in the air.

But yes.....as I said the directors just left it up to the audience to decide what happened. it's kinda like in the walking dead when Morales leaves and everyone kept asking about him so they brought him back as a way to tell people 'Now you know his fate'. One of my absolute favorite zombie movie endings too. It ended badly, as a zombie apocalypse only could, and in a unique way that fits the film well.

The helicopter in beginning right before trucker drives into gas pumps is homage to helicopter in original DAWN OF THE DEAD and trucker crashing into gas pumps is part of Bens story in NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD.

Such an entertaining movie. Goes to show Snyder was in his element when he made his older stuff before the superhero stuff came into play. This and 300 came out within 2 years of each other. This movie also just goes to show that if you can make it entertaining enough, fast zombies are the way to go. This movie at times could've had a Left 4 Dead quality to it and I appreciate that.
I think this and 300 and watchmen prove that Snyder is only good at taking already established IPs and putting is his own unique spin on the adaptation. Could be wrong but I don't think he's ever done anything that's an truly original idea has he?

That section in the tunnels is Aliens - Newt in the water, Gorman & Vaszuez' last stand, the armored truck breaking out thru the complex doors as Ripley shouts "Hold on". The music is even very Goldsmith.
I remember I was like 13 when I saw this. Me and my friend watched the first Resident Evil movie and then right after we were like “yeah we’re into zombie movies”. We had to take a little break after the intro. 😂

The song Man Comes Around by Johnny Cash was so epic of a choice. It fits soooooo well. Especially when you realize the one person immune is the holy guy.
I know Jake Weber the best from his role on Medium. Dawn of the Dead is probably one of my favorite zombie movies of all time. I love how the tropes just worked in this and everyone brought their A-game. plus, Ving Rhames is always a win. thanks for the reaction, guys! 😃
I really love Weber's character Michael. A great everyman to root for.
The director's commentary to this movie is really fun to listen to, you can tell Snyder had a blast making this movie because it was one of his earlier productions and there wasn't a lot of pressure riding on him. It's especially satisfying because of the success this movie would bring him later on.
6:25 Holy cow I haven't thought about "Splice" in ages! That to me was one of those weekdays-late-at-night-horror-flicks you'd eventually find on some channel somewhere and then stick around for a while, during a period in life where free time was rather abundant

46:38 The mall was actually a character itself in the original. Every crook & cranny. Every hallway & escalator was a big part of the adventure. There’s even a montage with silly sound effects as they’re turning the power on, lol

My cousin lived in the Seattle area when there was several day power outage caused by a rare winter blast storm. Sometimes the arctic air streams comes due south, but it's rare, so people aren't prepared for it. People in the area went to the local mall to escape the cold because it had power.
One of my fave movies ever! And I love the jazzy rendition of down with the sickness that's played in the mall montage.
I remember this coming out and being super excited because Romero’s Night of the Living Dead is one of the first horror films I ever watched as a kid, and it spawned my love for zombie films since then! I was about 18 when this came out and watched it many times. This remake and Night of the Living Dead remake are my comfort films lol.

I’m not sure what you’re trying to say…because I’ve seen both Dawn and Day…and I actually have a tank top of Day of the Dead and shirts of Night of the Living Dead as soon as they were restocked after being sold out lol. I’ve seen the OG version of Dawn and Night, I’ve even seen the OG version of The Crazies that Romero had a hand in as well as the remake. I’ve also got Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead on DVD and have watched Survival of the Dead (although it’s my least favorite). I also have the book ‘The Living Dead’ and ‘Nights of the Living Dead’. I enjoy Romero films period. Just stating which ones are MY comfort films. Nothing crazy lol.
This movie terrifies me. So glad you guys enjoyed it! If you can find it online or on dvd the dvd had special features that were in universe news broadcast like what was in the opening montage and it just escalated the realness/scary aspect for me.

Unless I'm mistaken, that is untrue there is a sequel made be Zack that is a remake of the sequel to the original Dawn, and is very very bad.

this was my first proper zombie film i watched as an early teen im 31 now and its still my top zombie film an absolute classic for me i love the opening montage
My sister and I used to watch this any time we we took a sick day. 20 years later we still watch it when we are home sick, and we send eachother pictures of the screen lol

I had the opportunity to see this movie when it came out on DVD and it was one of the best home theater experiences. I was so used to the classic undead from before that I was taken by surprise by the aggressiveness with which they acted.

Glad I get to watch this with you. I was like 4 when this came out and was probably the first zombie movie I’ve ever seen. Scared the shit outta me. But now. Horror is my favorite and I love this one so much. Can’t wait to watch with you guys ❤❤

Wildest part of the movie to me, is the Delta Force (i think that's what I heard the soldiers in the whitehouse segment were) just opening fire on the ENITRE PRESS CORPS for one person, clearly not infected, coming up to ask questions.
I remember waiting for the first “premier”trailer during some show commercial break of the opening scene up to the car crash into the gas station!!man I was HYPED!always been a Romero fan!
On the DVD there are Andy's video diaries and news broadcasts. Gotta miss those days when studios went above and beyond with special features.

This movie is slowly becoming cult classic amongst newer fans of the zombie genre. Yes we all know George A Romero's original Dawn of the Dead is a classic with its satirical commentary on consumerism, along with the other cuts of the film, but Snyder's 2004 is a fun watch. I like to think of it as an alternate, faster version of Romero's universe using the more modern tropes of faster Infected/Zombies. No it's not going to "replace" Romero's films, it's just a fun action paced zombie movie.
I really love the opening scene of this movie. The slow build before shit immediately hits the fan, is so well executed.

This had such a kick a&& cast. Sarah Polley, Jake Weber, the amazing Ving Rhames, Ty Burrell, Mekhi Phifer, Kevin Zegers, Matt Frewer (Trash Man!), Ken Foree, legend Tom Savini, and the inimitable Michael J Kelly. Snyder has a cameo.
I feel like it was CSI: Miami that made the whole - saying one liner, then putting on sunglasses - trope a really popular thing. lol. Anybody remember that. Every episode, dude would say a one liner then put his sunglasses back on. Supernatural even made a gag about it. lol.
This is my favourite horror movie of all time, the original and Night are both groundbreaking and have their own charm for sure, but the updated effects and the soundtrack makes me prefer this one soooooo much, so glad you’re reacting to this :D

I love this movie, i even saw it in theaters. I loved the opening and closing credit edits and the final scene where everyone loses, it felt like a breath of fresh air and it was nice to see a horror movie end poorly for the cast. i remember when this came out and all the hate the "fast zombies" got. Early 2000s was a wild time.

20:03 is Tom Savini the “Godfather of Gore” and he worked on the Original Dawn of the dead’s make-up effects! His work is very good and he was also in From Dusk Til Dawn as Sex Machine. Love all the Easter eggs in this movie.
I remember reading somewhere that the person who played Anna actually through herself backwards into the bathtub and everyone was shocked on set. There was something about her having a bad back before that I think? So they weren't expecting it at all.
this is one of my favorite zombie movies. I love that they set it in the mall. Like that's where you go when there's a zombie apocalypse.

I agree, mall would have a lot of everything, but wouldn't that also be the major problem?? I mean, far too many points of entry. Although with enough prep time a solid group COULD reorganize everything they need into a smaller more contained space. Use hardware supplies for generators and tools; furniture stores for living accommodations; focus on completely isolating the grocery store for maximum food storage. Then empty out all the other stores and blockade off the corridors and you might just have a valid shelter. But you'd have to patch in the building's power into a focused section and make sure that it is always free on zombies. Essentially you'd need a little bit of every kind of person. Definitely a handy man.
I saw this in theaters with my 7th grade best friend. I accidentally farted at the quiet scene when she put her ear to the bathroom door. We had nachos and I don’t do well with cheese. I was embarrassed but everyone in the theater laughed. It was great. The movie was even better. 10/10 for me.

Can't believe this movie is 20 years old. It's the movie I seen with my son's dad on our first date, 20 years ago this month.
The movie they are referencing here that takes place on an island is probably the Italian "sequel" to Romero's "Dawn of the Dead" "Zombie" directed by Lucio Fulci. The Italian cut of Dawn of the Dead was released under the title "Zombi" in many European countries and this supposed sequel was released in Italy as "Zombi 2" also known as "Zombie Flesheaters" in the UK.
This is easily Zack Snyder’s best movie.
