  • Why do people tend to believe there's a real divide between everything which is religious in the art world and everything which is not religious. And sometimes they believe all of life is divided into two categories: sacred and secular.
But the problem with seeing everything in these two categories is it's not biblical. Join us in this video to understand why.

I really appreciate your thoughts on this, and helping us see the value of art through scripture.. It's honestly been so tempting to stamp a verse on the pieces I've created, and or to title the artwork explicitly - mostly from a place of trying to control what my viewers derive from my work.. But these videos are helping me to let go of this control, and simply helping me to focus on just honoring God with my work, in the way truth-filled storytelling, and what's glorified appropriately.

      Shallsoar, you made my day!!!!!!!
Any time we can help an artist like you find more freedom in Christ, and freedom that will boost their creativity and impact, we are overjoyed!!!

    My opinion on this
Not only can we make secular art I believe it is our duty to do so.
The fact that Christians think all of our art has to preach is a contributing factor to the church’s lack of art and lack of culture.
We must make art for art’s sake, to honor God yes but not to just be “Christian art”.
The world makes all sorts of art, and we must as well if we want to build the kingdom’s culture.
I call secular art made by Christians “kingdom art” because while it may not be explictly “Christian” it’s in the Christian environment and therefore is contributing to the kingdom.

      Garrison,
Yes, i agree- we should be making mainstream art, or "secular art" because we are to be salt and light in the culture.
But I don't think we should say, "art for art's sake." That is what artists say to claim their art cannot be critiqued by any other system.
I would say, we should create art for God's sake.
I hadn't heard of calling it kingdom art, but it works. Has a nice ring to it

@@ArtsEntertainmentMinistries I don’t mean no criticism. I couldn’t think what else to say “art for art’s sake” is a bad term but I just meant art made out of passion for art rather than feeling like you absolutely have to include a moral lesson in every single thing you make.
Kingdom art is something I coined. I have a video about it.

@@ArtsEntertainmentMinistries I just mean, the fact Christians are doing it is a very profound thing in of itself.
Imagine for example if Christians never played the piano. If a Christian decided to play the piano he would absolutely be contributing to the kingdom even if it wasn't specifically for worship music because he'd be doing something that no other Christian had been doing.

Yeah, I figured that is what you mean. I didn't mean to be critical either, just want to clarify.

I always felt that God works in many ways, like working through even with the non believers but I didn't know about the story of Cyrus until now. God is great. Amazing content, yet again

There are so many amazing stories in the Bible that remind us how God "works in mysterious" and surprising ways!!! Thanks for sharing!!

There's a version of a Christmas Carol where Scrooge's repentance sounds almost Christian, specifically asking God to forgive him and give him the strength to do good. I don't think it was made by Christians but that moment sticks with me.

Well, yes. Biblical ideas abound in A Christmas Carol.
Dickens’ story reminds us that our celebrations of Christ’s birth ought to transform all that we do - not just the traditions within the walls of our churches.
It should transform our everyday life, our workplaces, our educational and cultural institutions, our artistic activity and creative enterprise, and our political action and witness.

Can you talk more about how the Bible view God's (/and our) mission to redeem the art scene?
Is beauty an evangelistic instrument? (Can God reveal Himself through beauty by natural/general revalation, or is the point of general revalation more that nobody has an excuse of not believing in Him, but we are only to seek His revalation through His Word, and then enjoy his presence in prayer, get the truth illuminated by the Spirit etc)
Do you know of any Cinemas that shows Christian movies or/and only movies that does not glorify sin?
Do you know of evangelical art galleries that manage to collaborate with secular artists as well?

Classical, good to hear from you. Hope you are staying warm in Norway!!
Great comment and idea for another video.
Yes, beauty is an echo of the nature of God himself - that is what draws us into a state of "awe and wonder" when we encounter profound beauty.
Cinemas that do not show movies that glorify sin?
that would be nice...maybe in the southeast part of the U.S. -what we call the "Bible Belt."
-there are streaming services that can make this their business model - ChristianCinema and VidAngel are the two that come to mind. Naturally without a brick and mortar facility with the overhead expenses helps tremendously.
Evangelical gallerists that work with secular artists....YES!! there are quite a few in L.A., and NY. probably more around the world. It is a great way to connect.

The first Jesus movement was mainly about music, it revitalized Christian music.
But I feel that the next one will mainly be about art, Christian art has been basically dead for a long time.
