When I saw this scene for the first time, I was wondering how they were going to change up the mission briefing. Such a great twist to have that happen instead!
The usual mission briefing suddenly becoming evil and self aware is honestly one of my favorite scenes out of all the Mission Impossible movies so far.
It’s a nice twist on the usual IMF briefing scene. And it was the perfect setup. By the time Ethan knows, it’s too late. The room is sealed, ready to be gassed, and his contact is set up to be killed with him helpless to stop it.
What I love about Mission Impossible films is that even in a simple plot there's so much that keeps happening to keep our interest intact. But sometimes some things are repititive and predictable. They have used those face masks so many times that we already know who could possibly be hiding behind whose face. This scene was great though !!!! I didn't see it coming. The opening scenes of MI films are always dope.
This is a nod to the original series. In one episode the team leader Dan Briggs enters a record store to retrieve his mission in the same way and on a vinyl record. Only there was no cool hologram projection of the objectives in the 60s version AND it isn't a trap, lol.
I enjoy how the movie starts and ends with the same situation of being trapped in a glass box but this is why you just kill Ethan here. You got him... take him out. Classic Villian mistake in every movie.
The thing is, Solomon Lane wanted information out of him. It's the same reason Hunt didn't kill him at the end, allowing him to make life harder in Fallout. It's a calculated risk.
Later on in the movie it is explained Lane planned the whole thing: get him, let him escape, have him bond with Ilsa, just to use him to steal the Red Box ("i can tell you, it's impossible": only Ethan can do it)
Not that Wikipedia is gospel or anything, but it references the Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane album as the one referenced in this scene, not Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall. I just bought the former on vinyl and am listening to it now. The latter is on its way. Great stuff, regardless, and a great movie.
That was so unnecessary. You do not kill unless you have to. Doesn't Lane have any self-respect? She was a low level operative. She knew nothing other than to deliver the message. With operators at this level, you kill prime targets. As James Bond said "That girl didn't know one end of her rifle from the other. I only kill professionals."
He did it to drive home a point. The fundamental difference between Lane and Bond is this: Bond stands on your side of the story, Lane on the other. Bond has to be written in a way which appeals to the audience, while Lane must antagonize us; otherwise, what is perceived as terrorism becomes relatable. And that is something America just can't have.
Lane and the Syndicate revels in inciting collateral damage. And it’s a message to Hunt that noone - IMF or friendly contact - is safe. It’s in line with Greene killing Fields in Quantum of Solace. Both acts exhibit their respective levels of ruthlessness, showing how little they value the lives of others.
@@Agent_1701-D And his actions, given as he is depicted as the villain here, must antagonize the audience, so as not to confuse anyone about the black-and-white-world of movies.
The moment when they trap the protagonist seems very forced and not at all credible on the part of Tom Cruise. When the girl is killed by the villain, she should have at least yelled NO
He never even met the girl before, he seems angry enough to me. And how is it supposed to be not credible? They are literally trapping him in his back garden, where he thought to be safe.
@@Giovanni-dd6kq I know I didn't know the girl from before, but compare this scene to Qui Gonn Jin's death on Naboo during Star Wars: The Phantom Menace when Obi Wan Kenobi watches him die to his master in the hands of Darth Maul, that scream of anger made my hair stand on end and scared me terribly. That's called acting, but I look at Ethan Hunt's scene and it lacks a lot of strength.
@@Etombayambo man he's literally punching the door in anger...he is a trained spy who see people dying everyday, it would be cringe if he just started screaming and crying desperately for the death of a woman he literally met two minutes ago
As soon as the guy said “Because WE are the Syndicate”, I was like “Oh fuck...” I had the biggest chills you could ever imagine
that moment, Hunt knew he is fucked up
0:27 You can see that Solomon Lane was already waiting in the record shop.
That is also what im gonna ask..Yes...i only noticed that after many times watching..
I know cute girl
The record shop girl is cute rouge nation was great
Kinda creepy that he is looking still to ceiling?
I never noticed that.
I noticed Lane chilling in the background only after watching the movie four times and now it makes me crack up everytime i see him.

Its my favorite. The subtle looks of interest on his face as he notices the wording is a bit strange is played perfectly.

I was kinda hoping they are going to sleep together.

The album they are talking about actually exists, "Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane"… it's a gem for Jazz lovers.
Art Blakey: Am I dead?
Yes it is

Indeed! It was the very first episode.
As a person who's never watched the series, thanks. It's good to know the movies still pay tribute to it.
One of the best twist despite of being partially spoiled in trailer.
First Mission Impossible, then the Last Jedi. Directors seem fond of killing off the poor girl's character a few minutes into the movie
I agree. Not to mention that movies that have her as main character always flop.
I'm so glad they clarified it was London ENGLAND because I never would have guessed.
McQuarrie learned his lesson by the time he did _Fallout._
They do it with every city, no sense to take it out just because it's London.
@@Giovanni-dd6kq in the first film they just named the city, it was refreshing.
@@ForeverBennett ok but then they always did. It's a style mark: people who live in Minsk will obviously feel the same when Belarus appears man...

At that exact moment, Ethan learned that he has become a legend.

Imagine being in the IMF team that thinks up what the next mission briefing gadget is lol
What an opening music.

Well Sean killed a person in style 👍🏻
She is cute
Is that David "Solid Snake" fucking Hayter I hear on the final vinyl?
I like the twist on the mission briefing in this one if I’m honest

The whole point was to set Ethan into motion. It led him to steal the red box for Lane.
