    I am glad we have someone like you doing these videos because it helps the consumer know when deciding on a custom PCB about what they are ACTUALLY buying. Most people don't even know what's on the PCB and assume that they are all great or same just because it's non reference. However, you actually point out interesting points on the PCB that makes it stand out for overclocking which is a huge factor into purchasing a non-reference in the first place. Kudos to you sir and hope you do more! I am currently waiting for XFX, powercolor and Sapphire custom PCB before I decide. Maybe you should do a video to compare all of the PCB and rank them from best to worst?

    Perhaps if you'd like, consider switching markup color to bright yellow or blue. I think it makes for better contrast.

    Those 4 pin fan headers are trick for those of us with mini-itx cases. My FTZ-01 has two 120mm slots facing straight at the gpu intakes, but if I want the fans loud only under gpu load, currently it has to be done in bios. Granted I have an SSD and the extra time spent if I wanted to sit down for a good session and take a trip through BIOS first to set them to full is minimal. But you get the point.

    Great PCB. The drawback of Asus is their cooler. They use the same cooler and the heat pipes don't go over the GPU like they should. If you want to change the cooler, go with LN2 or water, it's great. But to keep it on air, their cooler really is worse than many other brands.

    Could you either point us to a guide or give us a little one on how to make use of those voltage adjustment points?
    I am assuming a multiturn potentiometer. Do we connect it from the voltage point on one side to ground on the other? Do we start with the potentiometer turned all the way to max resistance or lowest resistance when booting the card when using it for the first time? What kind of resistance do we want on the potentiometer? 1 kohm?

    How bad do you see this hole "Asus slaps Nvidia Coolers on AMD cards" thing. Because the Heatpipes arent all touching the core because of the different orientation that gpu cores have from amd and nvidia and this does lower the max cooling ability for the cooler.

    • @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking
      @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think the heat-pipes can probably pass heat from one to another just fine. It would of course be better if they were all directly touching the core however I'm not sure if a copper heat-spreading plate would make things better or worse. In the past ASUS got a lot of flack for bad cooling on AMD cards especially the 390(X) and 290(X) however I don't believe that cooling performance was due to the heatpipes I think the heatsinks they put on the cards were just too small. The 290X Gaming from MSI has a similar cooler to ASUS DCUII 290X and gets worse temperatures with 41dB(79C) of noise vs the ASUS's 42dB(78C)(numbers from TechPowerUp reviews). No one ever moaned about MSI's cooler being crap even though it offers the same exact cooling performance as the ASUS. The Strix Fury is hotter than the Tri-X. However the Tri-X has a massive heatsink compared to the Strix Fury. ASUS only royally screwed up on some HD 7970 cards which needed a copper shim due to the metal brace around the core being taller than the core. On those card's ASUS's cooler literally didn't touch the core.
      Ultimately I would not judge a heat-sink based on how it looks. I would judge it on real world performance. If it gets the same temps at similar or lower noise levels it's a good heatsink. If it makes more noise and cools less it's a bad heatsink.

      @TV4ELP 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thx for your reply ^^ I just had Sapphire cards for ages and now still running a Asus hd6970 wich is not bad at all. I will look into some tests about the different coolers then there avaiable and then just buy the one wich is the coolest at the lowest noise level possible. Altough i realy like to overclock things and this asus pcb looks super cool. But anyways thx for your quick answer m8 ;)

    Just bought a 8gb version for a spare build with some older parts 3770k and a z77a msi g45 thunderbolt motherboard and 16gb 2133 ddr3. I think msi has the best 480 but not by much just like the look of the strix and its a case that shows the gpu vertical unstead of horizontal and the red of the msi cards has to hurt it sells. If they would just make it black it would go with most builds better. Hope the pcb not crap but i dont really care got my new main build. 6800k zotac 1070AE 64gb 3200mhz ddr4 asus x99 deluxe and a evga p2 750 psu. Using my old antec gamer 750 for my 480 build its been a great psu through 3 builds. But i should've got a 1060 but wanted to tinker woth polaris. Plus as those cards age i have a feeling polaris with age better and having 2gb vram doesnt hurt. Hell look at the 7970ghz vs 680 now the 7970 bitch slaps the 680 in most games.

    2 questions. Based on your findings, which of these RX 480s should I buy for crossfire? Should I go with 2 crossfire RX 480s or just wait for the RX 490.

  • @dcxSpartan117
    @dcxSpartan117 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    despite how the pcb looks my sapphire rx480 nitro+ can do a 1400mhz undervolted 60mv with a 2200mhz memory clock. I've got two other profiles that are set at 1420 and 1440mhz with solid stability. Undervolting saves power and reduces temperature so when I come out of gaming deus ex mankind divided on ultra settings my gpu has only displayed up to 45-50c however when I ran my tests with Furmark for stability I could hit 68-70c. But take into account Furmark is made to put tons of stress on the gpu while gaming is much easier.

    Which RX 480 would you recommend for gaming ? I'm currently thinking between the ASUS and the XFX GTR.

    • @florisr9
      @florisr9 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      "for gaming", as if it's not the obvious use for an RX 480.. LOL
      To answer the question, the XFX GTR is the best card for the price, the Asus Strix card has the best PCB for overclocking, but probably not worth the extra money.

    hi buildzoid. i own this card. i've read that the asus 480 strix and 580 strix PCBs are identical. i bought a custom water block that's compatible with both(bykski). what i can't find is if the Asus strix rx 590 oc PCB is overall identical? if it has 2 6pin power connector? if so i may dremel cut the blocks plastic power spot a little wider on it. i don't own it but watching the price falls. 590 has a 1560 clock stable vs my 480s 1440hz oc gddr 8600hz oc. maybe could crossfire both 480 oc with 590 oc. Is Asus strix rx 590 oc PCB is overall identical?

  • @TotoGeenen
    @TotoGeenen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    alright, so I have been looking around for an rx 480 for a while now. I want to watercool my gpu and cpu and I'm (ofcource) going for a custom loop. But what rx 480 should I buy? The strix and xtr have the best pcb, so it is gonna be one of these two. I probebly won't be able to find waterblocks that will cool everything and not only the gpu itself so I need the strix version because it has cooler vrm. It shouldn't run to hot because the vrm can deliver twice as much power annyways.
    So is all above correct or do you think I should do something diffrend, or have something wrong?

      they both look like slightly upgraded versions of the reference card. They almost certainly re-arranged the power distribution on both. The XFX seems to have the stronger PCB since it's using the 6894 and 6811 FETs but the Powercolor probably has better cooling. The Polaris chips are pretty temperature sensitive so I would go for the Powercolor

    anyone might know if the rx 580 strix has the exact same layout as this one? just want to know if the rx 480 strix water block would fit in the rx 580. thanks in advance if somebody can help

    Hi. So if I am not overclocking GPUs on water or anything more than that (OC only on stock cooler), without modyfying PCB and using LM2. is it necesary to get Strix? In Poland it is ~1500and MSI Gaming X is ~1350. Is MSI going to be enaugh for "softcore" overclocking?

    • @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking
      @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Strix and other super high quality PCBs are only really useful if you plan to run 1.3V+ with custom power limits. Basically they are only worth it when running settings that aren't safe for daily usage due to degrading the silicon

    • @LeitoAE
      @LeitoAE 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      So if strix will be on sale for this same price - I should go for it. If not - it is not worth to spend the money on that, right?
      You should definitely start to make videos like this about MB and power supplies. PSU is a difficult choice. I heard of PSUS made even by good manufacturers that after a year or 2 started to make some coil noises and instability issues. WATTS are not everything. Power quality is important too and only You can tell us what PSUs are good 😊. Thanks for your work!

    i hace an r9 270 from powercolor, is the turboduo, it has 4+2 phases do you think it is enough for 150w, i can overclock it 220mhz on the core and 500mhz on the memory

    which rx 480 you recomend for oc? but like kinda a cheap one i saw the gtr video of jaystwocent's video of the xfx gtr and i blowed me away (the RS is supposed to be the samething but only a 4 gb card wich what i want)

    • @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking
      @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The RS is not even remotely similar to the GTR

    • @THEwed123wet
      @THEwed123wet 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      when i go to the newegg page it says that the RS has the hard swap fans and the 40% improved cooling and all the features that the gtr is supossed to have , the thing is that the gtr is 8 gb like 260$ and the rs is 4 gb and it's 210-220$

    • @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking
      @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The RS has a completely different PCB.

      THEwed123wet The RS can be had in 8GB, but I've read it's 4 phase instead of 6 like the GTR.
      Correct or not, I can't confirm.

    Ok so if i can get an asus strixx rx 480 for the same price as the sapphire nitro rx 480, should i buy it ? they both look good have leds ect.. but if i want to go the highest over clocks would the strixx be a better gpu over the sapphire?

    • @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking
      @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd get the Strix over the Nitro if they are the same price.

    • @nuyabiss
      @nuyabiss 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ok, the strixx has a 20$ mail in rebate right now so it places it right on the nitro and they both have battlefield 1 game code. side note i absolutely love what you are doing. alot of people don't understand that not all gpus of the same architecture are the same or equal. you've helped me make a very well informed decision and I am sure you've helped more people with the same. keep it up man.

      That's actually hard to do because GPU manufactures might have agreements directly with the component makers in which case the parts can be much cheaper than what you can find on the internet. The IR 3555 for example is 2.5eur a piece in a batch of 3000 according to my basic google search but I doubt that ASUS actually pays that much for them since they could probably order everything direct from IR.

      I'm fully aware that most GPUs have 4+ layers.

    • @Germanwtb
      @Germanwtb 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, (i was a little bit shocked )
      It just seems to me as though the vias connect that plane to the 8 pin power. Also it would make no sense putting them at the top if they were connected to the pci power on the bottom, dont you think?

    • @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking
      @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing is you can clearly see solder pads that aren't used that would connect the 12V plane of the Vmem/Vaux VRM to the 8pin. Also the location of the two minor VRMs is probably mostly aesthetic.

    • @Germanwtb
      @Germanwtb 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, maybe. The only way to figure that out would be an xray of that card.
      That also makes me wonder where the vias on the Vcore 12v plane lead to..

    • @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking
      @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      or poking the card with a DMM would also show the 12V split.
