Im getting the XFX card in a couple of days, and I was looking forward to a review like this. Seems like the best choice, all raound, the most solid option.
Great job explaining xfx rx480 gtr in depth hardware specs. I bet half of the people don't even understand what you talking about they only care about how well a graphics card overclock and how low is the temps. Sad part even a xfx rx480 gtr black edition can't compete with a regular gtx 1060 in dx11 games. I always been a big fan of amd and hope ryzen does change the game..
Hey man, thank you for making these videos. I find them very useful and informative, even though i'm not that much into OC :D I also like that you teamed up with GN, since their channel is probably my favorite right now when it comes to hardware reviews and news. Both you and them deserve A LOT more viewers and subs and i hope you will get there soon. As for the RX480 GTR, try asking Jay from JayzTwoCents to land you his sample because it's a golden one, apparently :) Best of luck!
Péter Menyhárt They should, I've only seen Kit Guru page do this kind of work but I feel this guy is on another level. He will become one of the best HW reviewers just like Tiny Tom Logan.
thanks a lot. Finally a review I can use to something. Have been looking at the xfx for a long time now. but this made up my mind. Will get one of this. And watercool it. Seems to make the must sens.
Please HELP, I have an XFX RX 480 8GB and APW8713 on Display Rail is not generating POK so there is not EN on the PWM (NCP81022) so no Vcore. I measured resistance and everything seems to be OK, also All voltages are good but Vcore is not present. what can I do? all voltages on APW8713 (EN, VIN, VCC) are also present but still no POK, chip is not overheating. Should I just replace APW8713? or is something else I could try?? I dont have replacement
Actually Hardcore Overclocking Hey! Sorry to bother you but could you tell us if this card is more efficient than any other RX 480? I know an AIB card shouldn't increase efficiency as its got the same chip as the reference and any other card, but there are no reviews up and the only review of this card is coming from JayTwoCents and he noted that somehow this card only consumed 80W at maximum load in unigine heaven and valley, and only 140W when overclocked to 1480MHz which is absolutely incredible and it would mean that if we use this AIB version of this card as a baseline for Polaris efficiency, then Polaris would be a more efficient architecture than Pascal LOL, which sounds absolutely ridiculous but numbers don't lie. Since Jay is the only one who have done this maybe his numbers are wrong, It'd be nice to see other people get results to see what's going on and why this specific custom card is so much more efficient while losing no performance at all, even when overclocking.
I agree Dargonante. If he gets the card from the manufacturer I really want him to use to some volt probes and see how much power it is using. 'Cause if Jay's video was right about the amount of power it's using. That will be incredible.
that would be great, especially that jay's might be a golden sample sent to a big youtuber. kind of pity if u think that jay gets all da free hardware, yet actually hardcore overclocking does break down of the pcbs of cards and more and maybe maybe gets one lols. did jay yet do a vulkan benchmark? :D or are we still waiting. adoredtv didn't get review cards either apparently, being at 33k subs out of some reasons. hope u gonna get one.
just read about them a few days ago. it seems very unlikly that the chip jay got was one of them. but maybe a later production, which was partially improved upon already, idk. also the quote spoke about: a more refined binning process which should only hit the mobile market. no reason to throw away chips, that are within power limit and work. if this will be true and actually effect the desktop market great! if jay just had an improved version of the chip on the same pcb, then well hello to hardcore silicon lottery, where there are actual changes and not just luck. he might just had a mixture of both though, amd improved the process a bit and he got freaking lucky.
Can't wait for the XFX RS video. Got it last month and I would hate to think that this is a drastic change considering the GTR was only £20 more and I really didn't want the RGB. Not sure what the Ultra Low Noise XL Inductors do, "Guessing coil whine" But was willing to skip them to save a little. Like I say I hope it's not a drastic change !
So this time XFX IS actually the better card around when comparing to the Sapphire Nitro version. Hm. Who would have thought. Ah well. Seems I go XFX for the RX480.
Turns out GTR is the best of them all. Keeping 64c on 1470Mhz overclock on AIR.... God damn i should've gotten myself a GTR. I have no idea how the fuck did they pull this off but they did.
LeFlavius_NL and i fucked up terribly by buying powercolor :( If i knew XFX could reach 1475 on air with 64c celsius... My god. This truly deserves to wield the name GTR. Beats the competition easily and is cheaper then the competition. Just like GTR is.
Any info on how the XFX RS RX 480 compares as far as PCB? I've got the 1288mhz 9.5" card (most are 11") and have been able to find little to no info on it.
is there a specific reason for that? is it a weakness of the nitro, or is it a certain special quality of the xfx? does that "better" automatically translate into "better performance" or is it just about the quality (longevity) of pcb components this refers to? thanks in advance!
Mostly just a quality thing if you don't plan to use LN2 or DICE. The RX 480s on air cooling will typically peak at around 170A with 1.25-1.3V core and 1440 +/-30mhz.
Actually Hardcore Overclocking In terms of Mosfets, low fets, and high fets, is the HIS Roaring something is the same as XFX GTR? Can't view it well, I have a bad internet connection and loading time to view it very well on your video..
Awesome channel, glad I found you! Great info! Do you actually get all these cards yourself, or would you be able to just use pics of a PCB from others assuming everything is measured and legible? I'd love to contribute if thats the case.
Thanks for all the useful info on the VRMs dude. I have an RX480 GTR from XfX and was plannig to re-use a universal waterblock I have sitting around to watercool it. Considering I do not want to OC the card in any particular way (if not by the lenght in which the CCC allows you to do), can I go for it wihtout heatsinking the vrms? I got some decent airflow inside the case (not a wind tunnel, but decent).
I can confirm the GTS RX 580 does not have the same VRM, presumably the GTR version does, but that wasn't available to me. The GTR version uses a 4+1 phase NCP81022, three NCP81162 doublers, and FDMF3035 half bridge FETs. I'm a bit annoyed it doesn't match, but on air, that card has managed 1500mhz stable (half hour of heaven benchmark, then about 8 hours of heavily modded Fo4) at stock voltage (1.15v). Also 2250mhz memory, just needing a 20% increase in power limit to keep from throttling. Though they do seam to have included far more capacitance. 8 820uF aluminum and 24 ceramic. imgur.com/a/fO9l0Qa
Great content! I've been learning to talk without a script as well, but damn do the videos become longer. Why are these two PCB's the same though? Are HIS and XFX friends or the same companies or something?
have u thought about looking at the power-"plates" to identify aux and mem on this one? as far as i can recognise the plate from the upper one is touching the memory chips, while the one from the phase below seems to connect to the core. may be wrong, looking for plates on an mobile device is quite hard.
Is the only difference with the 4GB model of the GTR is VRAM and clock speeds? Just want to confirm that it uses the same PCB setup etc. Also at this stage I am also deciding between the GTR and STIX. My current concern with the STIX is that it may be louder and hotter than the GTR from what I am hearing.
I have one of these haven't done much with OC on it yet but able to hit 1360 on air and 2200 for memory. id like to see how to get it to 1400 on the stock cooler. what settings do you need to use? what overclocking program?
Hi, do you compare pcb XFX rx480 RS version? I was bought RS, but i am confused now. Did i make a mistake for save a few bucks? (Zdravím ze Sudet, lajkuju, sdílím a odebírám. Jen tak dál, dobrá práce.)
need help real bad guys. right now the gtr costs $280 in my country, the gaming x $309, iceq roaring $258, nitro+ $282.. i dont need to overclock. i just need the one that have the best cooler because i live in a tropical country. i searched almost every forums, etc but everyone has different results.
I would like to see a review for Asus Strix R9 390 graphics card PCB, if it is possible. My models is the 1000 MHz for the GPU and 1500MHz for memory. Thank you. I would like to know if I made the right choice with this model from Asus.
cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/AMD-HBM-Die-Stacked-Memory.jpeg you're probably cutting the PHY by 30-40%. So, approx 30W for the GDDR5 controller on die. Which, based on the Rx 480 155-160W powerdraw, would give the RAM at about 25-30W, which lines up nicely with the figure of about 10-12GBps per watt figure given by AMD to the press when first talking about HBM.
quick question, this with a gpu only cooler or an xfx reference black witha full cover cooler ? and does it really matter which manufacturer you get if its a reference ?
Nice!!! I studied medicine in Brno for like three years :) Keep up the good work man. P.S.: How did you improve your pronunciation to the point, that you are indistinguishable from a native speaker :) (I did something similar back when I was a child with my German, but I have a hard time adapting to the English pronunciation) .
After visually comparing the reference rx480 PCB to this PCB i see difference around the back end of the memory where the screw holes are in different locations but would it be possible to put a reference water block on the non reference card with slight modifications in regards to rear screw locations? (edit) and the front end around the video outputs especially the DVI connector.
Thanks for the reply. That was my takeaway from your videos as well. Why not the reference though, as you said that iit was overkill as well :)? Do you have any idea how to cool the VRMs though? the vrm cooler of the morpheus doesn't fit the screw layout at all.
The BIOS-switch on this card. Is it just switching between the two versions available on the XFX website or are the downloadable ones different from the ones that comes loaded on the card out of the box?
so whats the difference between the xfx 480 rs and the GTR the site said the gtr has xl inductors but thats all i could tell. i keep hearing the rs is worse than the GTR. i went and bought the rs from bestbuy and was able to get it to 1400 easily memory was touchy i also get signal loss a couple times. I'm returning it as it was 291$ after tax and thats more than the strixx 480 let alone the GTR version.
I have the GTR OCed version and have some problem with fairly high temperature. Could you tell me where is the core temp is measured so I may do something with its stock cooler?
I meant "where" on the PCB that temperature is measured or how it measured. Thus, I could know which part is not cooled properly. And yes, I did make the new fan profile, apply new thermal paste but nothing help.
@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking-- Dude seems like you know what your talking about. Question if you can answer, I recently had a Nitro+480 and I was playing with the OC, got the card up to 1460Mhz, 65 Temp Max, 0mV, Power Limit at +30% and it was semi stable. I was working on adding another +5% to the Power limit when the car just shut off on me while running Heaven. Needless to say it didn't turn on. Could adding/increasing the "Power Limit" on these things kill the cards? I mean I get the computer crashing, but I see other vids same thing happen and the PC starts right up. I troubleshooted for 6 hours and nothing could bring it back. Soon as I stuck a new card which I picked up of the same exact king, booted right up.
The stock power limit on the Nitro shouldn't let you break it even if you do +50%. You might have just gotten a faulty card. That just happened to give up when running Heaven. A lot of small electrical faults from manufacturing tend to show up in the first 3 months of usage. So I wouldn't consider this a user error.
Actually Hardcore Overclocking Thanks for the response; the card may have been faulty as you say. With that said it also may have been a better OC card lol. The card I picked up another Nitro +480, I was messing with the OC software and the max I could get it without any extra was 1372Mhz from 1342Mhz. Using +0mV and +0% Power Limit. I tried going to 1382Mhz and within the first loop of Heaven the clock kept crashing at different points. I tried raising the Max Power limit to +25% and same thing kept happening. So next step I did was raise the mV to +30 with a +10% Power Limit and I got the card to go on a couple of steady loops of heaven with no crash at 1390Mhz. Now I would like to try and push the card a little harder but I'm wondering how safe I can go on the mV bump. Cause it looks like it will need it. GPUZ was showing a max temp at 65c, Showed a Max Watt Draw of 240W with an Average of 160ish. Showed a Max voltage of 2.038 with an Average Voltage of 1.4ish. Thanks
yeah I had something similar happen with a 290 where the replacement was worse than the card that died. Those GPU-z readings sound glitched out 2V should trip the OVP on the voltage controller and 1.4V is way too high an average. What does it read at stock settings for voltage? (240W also seems really wrong)
Actually Hardcore Overclocking Hmm...Ok I will check back when I get home after work and rerun the test again in about 5 hours. The Max/Min/Average on GPUZ OC, I'll also do the Stock Max/Mins/Averages for a Run of Heaven also to compare. Thanks
Ok I just ran a Benchmark of Metro2033 and these are my GPU-Z Stats (I will post as follows Min/Max/Average) . First on Stock Nitro+480 from factory with Core Clock 300/1342/1237 MHz, Gpu Temp 41/60/53 C, GPU Only Power Draw 19.6/200.5/110.29 Watts, VDDC 1.025/1.175/1.133 Volts Next with Overclock of 1390MHz, +30mV and Power Limit +20%: GPU Core Clock 300/1390/1165.03 Mhz, GPU Temp 39/62/53.43 C, GPU Only Power Draw 19.6/197.6/109.95 Watts, VDDC 1.025/1.55/1.151 Volts How are the above numbers looking?
you can hard mods AMD power limits except that doing that is a massive pain. Generally it's just better to take the BIOS for AMD cards and remove the power limit in that. However than does have some limitations.
I assume you are talking about the X Power gaming titanium ? Either way it really deends on what things you do and care about. The MSI board is a good mem clocker (assuming you have B die) for a 4 dimm board. It's also better if using dice or ln2 because it's OC centric and has settings to deal with CB/CBB. If any of this sounds foriegn to you then the Asus is fine unless your plans are to compete with buildzoid and the rest of us HWBotter's and wish to know more about XOC, then get a new board
Thank you for the great efforts. Can you analyze the ASUS Strix RX 470 oc PCB and this the picture of it www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/RX_470_STRIX_OC/images/front_full.jpg But if you don't have the time, can you tell us if the used VRM components is good or bad for this low power card compared to the reference RX 480' VRM components or even the gigabyte or powercolor custom RX 480's VRM components.
UBIQ, who supplies MSI's Gaming X RX480 with their mosfets, updated their site about 5 days ago, are these it: www.ubiq-semi.com/en-article-upi-663-1875#
have u thought about looking at the power-"plates" to identify aux and mem on this one? as far as i can recognise the plate from the upper one is touching the memory chips, while the one from the phase below seems to connect to the core. may be wrong, looking for plates on an mobile device is quite hard.
Yeah I considered that until I noticed that the plate that looks like it's hooked to the memory is hooked to what I suspect to be the GND on those MLCC capacitors.
XFX did a great job on this card; good PCB, good heatsink, and good looks. Thanks for another helpful video
Xfx gtr or strix rx 480
Im getting the XFX card in a couple of days, and I was looking forward to a review like this.
Seems like the best choice, all raound, the most solid option.

No wonder on Jayz review the card only pull 130W since it doesn't measure VRAM and AUX consumption, what trickery lol
I'd just like to point out how insanely cool XFX would be if they would send you that card! ;)

Actually Hardcore Overclocking Hey!

I think thats what.
just read about them a few days ago.
it seems very unlikly that the chip jay got was one of them.
but maybe a later production, which was partially improved upon already, idk.
also the quote spoke about:
a more refined binning process
which should only hit the mobile market.
no reason to throw away chips, that are within power limit and work.
if this will be true and actually effect the desktop market great!
if jay just had an improved version of the chip on the same pcb, then well hello to hardcore silicon lottery, where there are actual changes and not just luck.
he might just had a mixture of both though, amd improved the process a bit and he got freaking lucky.

Thanks..I've learned about VRM build. Back then i was only saw 3triple as the best card..never know the PCB.
how would you rate the RX480s PCBs that you have seen? 1 XFX? 2 Asus? 3 Sapphire? 4 Gigabyte, and 5 Powercolor?
So this time XFX IS actually the better card around when comparing to the Sapphire Nitro version. Hm. Who would have thought. Ah well. Seems I go XFX for the RX480.
Subbed. I loved the breakdown you did there.
Turns out GTR is the best of them all. Keeping 64c on 1470Mhz overclock on AIR.... God damn i should've gotten myself a GTR. I have no idea how the fuck did they pull this off but they did.
isn't sapphire amds EVGA?
i thought the black edition was the best? doesn't it do 1338 out of the box? where the GTR does only 1288?

I'd like to know as well, I got the RS because it was the cheapest 480 8g and I hope it's not too bad of a card
so the RS does 1288 and the GTR does 1338? whats the black edition?
but it is a 4 gb card not 8
The Black Edition is 1338 and the XXX is 1288 if I am not mistaken.
Which RX 480 PCB is better in your observation? Sapphire Nitro or XFX GTR?
GTR
Actually Hardcore Overclocking Thanks for your answer
is there a specific reason for that?

Hey, I'm loving these videos but just a quick question, do you know if the XFX RX 480 GTR black edition is binned?
I have just ordered one, lets hope the lottery is nice to me!, i won it with my current GTX 650 (it hits 1350 from 1050)
great videos, thanks. could you do a PCB breakdown of a Palit 1060 Super Jetstream. would be very helpful. thanks again for your videos

yeah I'm Czech. ATM studying in the UK.
Nice!!! I studied medicine in Brno for like three years :) Keep up the good work man.
P.S.: How did you improve your pronunciation to the point, that you are indistinguishable from a native speaker :) (I did something similar back when I was a child with my German, but I have a hard time adapting to the English pronunciation) .
Please, make a breakdown from a gtx 1070 amp extreme
After visually comparing the reference rx480 PCB to this PCB i see difference around the back end of the memory where the screw holes are in different locations but would it be possible to put a reference water block on the non reference card with slight modifications in regards to rear screw locations?
(edit)
and the front end around the video outputs especially the DVI connector.
I'd just go for a universal GPU block that isn't PCB dependent.
+Actually Hardcore Overclocking can i know the difference between MAGIC R15 vs R22 vs R33 etc.?
R15 got higher chance causing coil whine? thanks.
Holy shit the alignment of that 1R0 component at the top on the XFX card lol
That is not the most expensive xfx card. 480 GTR Black edition is. Not sure if it uses same pcb/components though
mine has died yesterday..it shows some weird colors on the screen. im not sure if its repairable or not ..
Hey. I'm planning on sidegrading from my 390X to a 480. Which card would you choose if planning on cooling it with a Morpheus 2 and OC'ing?
Definetily the XFX GTR since the only down side on that one is the slightly weaker cooler compared to some of the other high end cards.
Thanks for the reply. That was my takeaway from your videos as well. Why not the reference though, as you said that iit was overkill as well :)? Do you have any idea how to cool the VRMs though? the vrm cooler of the morpheus doesn't fit the screw layout at all.
The GTR basically doesn't need a VRM heatsink at all as long as the VRM gets some airflow.
Can you explain why the 1060's PCB looks a lot more simplistic than the 480's?
lower tdp, less vram, narrower bus = simpler pcb
The BIOS-switch on this card. Is it just switching between the two versions available on the XFX website or are the downloadable ones different from the ones that comes loaded on the card out of the box?
The BIOS switch switches 2 completely identical BIOSs. So it's only really useful for use as a back up during BIOS modding.
Actually Hardcore Overclocking alright. do you think I would gain any performance by getting the BIOS from the XFX website?
I don't think I saw any difference.
Can confirm Rx 580 8gb gts black edition same vrm and pcb
can you do pcb analysis for rx 470s as well
Thank you
completely torn here.
This - $310, black edition - $330 or inno3d gtx1060 - $295??
RX 480 is faster than GTX 1060. Getting the black edition does not guarantee a higher OC as the cards aren't binned.
Actually Hardcore Overclocking Cool. New prices today, $70 difference between gigabyte G1 and xfx gtr black.
Does it really suck?
where on earth can I get my hands on one of the his cards? I can't find them for sale anywhere
In the first minute,"I don't know, take my word for it". And I'm done
Will we be seeing an unlocked bios on this card?
Can you do the Asus RX 480 Dual OC? want to grab that one to do some OC with it
so whats the difference between the xfx 480 rs and the GTR the site said the gtr has xl inductors but thats all i could tell. i keep hearing the rs is worse than the GTR. i went and bought the rs from bestbuy and was able to get it to 1400 easily memory was touchy i also get signal loss a couple times. I'm returning it as it was 291$ after tax and thats more than the strixx 480 let alone the GTR version.
The RS is a 4 phase VRM not a 6 phase
yeah i took it back to bestbuy, was 291$ when i could get the gtr off newegg for 269 with a 10$ rebate and free shipping with no tax lol
I have the GTR OCed version and have some problem with fairly high temperature.
Could you tell me where is the core temp is measured so I may do something with its stock cooler?
MSI afterburner
I meant "where" on the PCB that temperature is measured or how it measured. Thus, I could know which part is not cooled properly.
And yes, I did make the new fan profile, apply new thermal paste but nothing help.
Thank you, I have used HWINFO, it give more info than hwmonitor.
Both VRM's temp are cool, so my problem is directly to the chip.
LeFlavius_NL Thanks man, yesterday I found that the thermal getting worse, kind of gradually degraded. So I call for RMA now.
First on Stock Nitro+480 from factory with Core Clock 300/1342/1237 MHz, Gpu Temp 41/60/53 C, GPU Only Power Draw 19.6/200.5/110.29 Watts, VDDC 1.025/1.175/1.133 Volts
Next with Overclock of 1390MHz, +30mV and Power Limit +20%: GPU Core Clock 300/1390/1165.03 Mhz, GPU Temp 39/62/53.43 C, GPU Only Power Draw 19.6/197.6/109.95 Watts, VDDC 1.025/1.55/1.151 Volts
How are the above numbers looking?
can you make a breakdown on msi armor rx470 pcb
how are the msi cards? what cards would have the best theoretical longevity.
70174A Based on specs alone the XFX and Asus would last the longest. I had an Asus Strix GTX 970 that died after 3 months so your mileage may vary.
no difference in xfx gtr black edition and xfx gtr triple x except bios with 50 mgh oc?
can someone please answer? I also want know.
As far as I know they should be identical.
Sapphire nitro+ or Xfx gtr???
You said there was a way to mod the power limit on AMD cards, is that right? On Nvidia it's pretty tsraightforward
AMD has only software limits as far as I know, so you can edit the Bios and that's it.
you can hard mods AMD power limits except that doing that is a massive pain. Generally it's just better to take the BIOS for AMD cards and remove the power limit in that. However than does have some limitations.
Is it worth upgrading from the Asus z170 ar mobo to the MSI titanuim?
I never had the Z170 titanium and I haven't used any Z170 anything so IDK
I assume you are talking about the X Power gaming titanium ? Either way it really deends on what things you do and care about. The MSI board is a good mem clocker (assuming you have B die) for a 4 dimm board. It's also better if using dice or ln2 because it's OC centric and has settings to deal with CB/CBB. If any of this sounds foriegn to you then the Asus is fine unless your plans are to compete with buildzoid and the rest of us HWBotter's and wish to know more about XOC, then get a new board
is this xfx rx480 gtr the same as the xfx rx 480 black edition?
No gtr is a complete custom pcb desing.
I have to xfx rx 480 rs I have not been able onfind the difference in mine and gtr can u tell me out of all ppl I hope u can ?
The RS has a weaker cooler and a 4 phase VRM.
great work that's where I am I go even lower :D what a joke
about your program. How about excel? :D
MSI Gaming X please!
Thank you for the great efforts. Can you analyze the ASUS Strix RX 470 oc PCB and this the picture of it
www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/RX_470_STRIX_OC/images/front_full.jpg
But if you don't have the time, can you tell us if the used VRM components is good or bad for this low power card compared to the reference RX 480' VRM components or even the gigabyte or powercolor custom RX 480's VRM components.
The audio voice is kinda low
UBIQ, who supplies MSI's Gaming X RX480 with their mosfets, updated their site about 5 days ago, are these it: www.ubiq-semi.com/en-article-upi-663-1875#
Youre voice volume is kinda low.Other than that your videos are best.
Uhm, how about GTX 1060 PCB Breakdowns, please? O:-)
Are these 2 layer or more?
2PCB layers? Most GPUs with 256+bit memory controller have 6+ layers.
Thanks. I just had no idea. (I assumed more, but had no clue)
is gtr and Rs similar
no
msi rx 480 8gb pls
XFX = HIS?
Yes they have the same PCB.
huh "today i learned"
Thanks for the reply, appreciate it
first
damn it. you win.
have u thought about looking at the power-"plates" to identify aux and mem on this one? as far as i can recognise the plate from the upper one is touching the memory chips, while the one from the phase below seems to connect to the core. may be wrong, looking for plates on an mobile device is quite hard.
Yeah I considered that until I noticed that the plate that looks like it's hooked to the memory is hooked to what I suspect to be the GND on those MLCC capacitors.
