  • So how does it fly?
Fitting the STOL aircraft tires on the Legal Eagle was pretty straight forward.
The suspension springs were removed and now the tyres perform all the suspension work running at about 8-10PSI.

Very nice. I almost bought a Legal Eagle last week but it had an engine on it that I have yet seen flown so I passed. It was bargain priced but 330 miles away from my location.

That is one good looking legal eagle. Likely the nicest paint job I have seen.

Thanks. The Oratex fabric is not painted, only the black highlights that you see.

The ultralight people have been putting golf cart tires on their aircraft for off-field Landings for years and they are considerably cheaper and a very good balloon tire for that purpose just something to think about

Thanks Peter. It is great knowing that people are enjoying them and hopefully learning and being inspired to build and fly.

Thanks. It's the best way I could think to show and describe what was happening with the wheel.

Hello, I would like to know what wing profile the Legal Eagle uses. I only know that it is a NACA but I don't have the number. I await a response. Thank you.!!

On a plane this light, personal weight loss is a performance enhancement. Something us chubby Americans should think about! Keep the outtakes! They definitely make the content more interesting. I’m not sure, did you stay with the hardwood spacers or have some machines out of AL? If I build a LEXL, yours will be what I measure mine against. Thanks for posting your progress!

What size tires are they? What is the axle height? Where did you get the tires?

making the disc rotor hubs (spacers) out of wood is a good idea, youd think someone made these off the shelf like azusa. im going to make mine with a 3d printer. you can get wheels from pocket rocket motorcyles with built in disc rotor hubs but there for only 10" to 11" diameter tires there 6.5" wheel diameter x about 4" wide.(more for ultralight aircraft) may i also suggest cable over hydraulic calipers, there much more powerful and very cost effective like $25 ea or high end ones for $100 ea.

I was thinking about 16” fat tire bike wheels. Affordable accept disk breaks fairly strong, and reasonably light.

Yes if they still make part 103

    • @DCSquared
      @DCSquared  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

We do not have Part 103 restrictions here in Australia. Would be hard to make sub 254lb in USA. However, I believe if you have a parachute (ballistic or hand deployed) there is an FAA allowance of 24lbs without requiring a separate weighing.
"Safety devices which are intended for deployment in a potentially catastrophic situation. Parachutes....
      (i) Up to 24 pounds of weight associated with the parachute system may be excluded by the FAA without requiring a separate weighing of the system components."
The way I read it, if your Legal Eagle weighs less than 278lb (254lb + 24lb) including some kind of chute, then you are still within Part 103 limits.
The addition of the tundra tyres added 16lb gross to my total weight.

@@DCSquared If unconstrained by a threshold to avoid regulation I would definitely adopt them. Les Homan has built 3 LE and managed to keep 103 on all the big Carlisle Turfglide 800-6 tires fit 103. He is like a road bike builder when focusing on weight but I think his 3 cylinders creates the 16lb window for these tires th-cam.com/video/GERIor5bgjM/w-d-xo.html your craftsmanship is wonderful
