This concert with Chad Hoopes is so incredibly intoxicating, that I have been listening to it every night before I retire. Such rich texture in his notes, the changes in tempo so pronounced in his rendition of this magnificent concerto that I’m speechless. Simply beautiful!
This is the first time that I enjoyed listening to this concerto. I just felt the story of the music which I did not realize in the recordings of other violinists. His really made the music to stand out. He "speaks" the music, not of himself.
Mr. Hoopes let the music speak for itself without overplaying or making too much of every musical gesture. His bow technique is tremendous. The orchestra is superb.
An overly-familiar work such as this which can fall on jaded ears needs a performance such as this that brings a fresh interpretation and perspective, with an almost excessive expressivity that suits the Concerto perfectly. Hoopes has an elegant tone and style that reminds me of Isaac Stern or Aaron Rosand.
not being a "classical" regular, I have to plead ignorance,, BUT,, the way he handles the instrument is as if it is part of him, and without sheet music?? What??? Fantastic.
That instrument has probably been with him for a while, so it pretty much as a part of him Also when you get to a certain stage as a soloist, sheet music isn't necessary in performance as you can remember it much easier than if you were part of an orchestra as the orchestral sections dont have as many distinct parts which helps you to remember what comes next
Ever since Liszt (1811-1886) kinda started it is normal and more or less expected that the soloist plays by heart :) And due to practising many, many hours each and every day - around 4-6h - (though some argue up to 40) one's instrument basically feels like part of one's body.
Wow, this guy makes an unbelievably gorgeous and rich sound, I could listen to him for hours. Such a confident and sophisticated performer as well. I thought they slowed down a bit too much for the tranquillo section in the first movement, but that’s just me being picky. This was a real treat!
This young violinist is special and worth watching out for. He has something unique and refreshing to say about this often-played masterpiece. I love his sound. And his technique and musicality are exquisite. Bravo!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Pensar que Mendels murió a los 38 años. !!!
On my junky radio I heard Leonard Bernstein at his debut conducting. That radio finally sounded good. Now that I have to use a computer and modest speakers and a hearing aid I hear an improvement in my listening ability. Tarmo Peltokoski is another Giant that will make headlines across the world with still hidden talent. Bravo!!!
Not since Gil Shaham with the San Francisco Symphony about 20 years ago have I heard so good a performance of this concerto. Bravo!!! (And, that modern fiddle sounds really good.)
The Violin Concerto No. 2 in E minor, Op. 64, for violin composed by Felix Mendelssohn, figures in the violin repertoire of German Romantic music of the 19th century as a work of the first importance. Behind Mendelssohn's radiant and happy-looking personality is a creator who is deeply demanding of himself. « A man of remarkable talent and a very cultured mind. He draws marvelously, plays the violin and the viola, reads Homer fluently in Greek and speaks four or five languages with ease » wrote Liszt about Mendelssohn, whose ease and multiple gifts were readily praised. Listening to this concerto overflowing with freshness and passion, it is difficult to imagine that so much effort went into its writing. From the first bars, it is a breath that carries us away as the soloist states his theme, doing abstraction of the traditional orchestral introduction. Mendelssohn thus takes his liberties with tradition, also going so far as to introduce the cadenza of the soloist from the middle of the first movement, whereas it was customary to put it at the end. A cadence written and not freely improvised by the performer, as if the composer wanted to avoid exuberance. And she does not interrupt the speech, the soloist continuing to play when the orchestra joins him in playing the initial theme of the concerto. To this first movement, which so well deserves its title of « Allegro molto appassionato », responds a dreamy « Andante » tinged with melancholy and with the allure of wordless romance leading to an frantic « Allegro molto vivace », in which the violin intoxicates us with its virtuosity. But a virtuosity all in lightness whose sparkling and almost fairy accents thus constitute one of the peaks of Mendelssohn's art, a « true jewel of the heart » as Joseph Joachim affectionately called him. *Lucien*
I hear bits of orchestra I don't usually. Also intonation is piquant at times, unexpected but deliciously colorful. I believe Menuhin might have enjoyed this interpretation, just saying as the soloist apparently was part of the Menuhin competition. What's old s new again.

I asked a friend of mine, who knows a lot about clothing, “ Is that a 19th century outfit?” He said, “No, 1970’s Hasidic jew. “ LOL It is a great performance, both soloist and orchestra.
Ah it's very pleasant when the solo violin sings so and is so unhurried at the start of the piece.

Excellent playing. Shocked I've never heard this man before. He is a former junior division 1st prize winner of the Menuhin Competition in 2008
He is my friends son! Proud of him!
Love the slower tempo in the first movement than is usually taken, really brings out the beauty in the music.

Agreed. His playing conveys an intimacy that's oftentimes missed, or masked, by more showy players.
So soulful, he never hurries the note and the phrase and it becomes so expressive
Conductor: starts at normal tempo
Soloist: n o p e , this is going to be better than normal.
Honestly one of the best violinkonzert in humanities history
Is he wearing SPARKLY SHOES?! amazing!!
I stumbled upon this comment just as I noticed the twinkle from his footwear! 😂
Very good and interesting interpretation of this amazing concerto. No cliche, not too fast, passionate and singed. Congrats to everyone!!

I got this from Mr. Hoopes website: Hoopes plays the 1991 Samuel Zygmuntowicz, ex Isaac Stern violin.
This may explain his tone! So nostalgic!
I was reminded of Aaron Rosand’s shimmering, delicious sound and his exquisite phrasing also!
Oder an Anne Sophie Mutter aus Deutschland.
Wunderschön, traumhaft schön gespielt,vielen Dank.
Man.... such a great performance,so calm and rich tunes.
the violin player is amazing, he is also dressed like a spy!
That's what I was saying!😂
More like an MI-6 one…👁
The fedora and sunglasses are in his dressing room.

It is the first time that I have heard Op. 64 played as a Mendelssohnian concerto. Simply malvelous!

So beautiful, his interpretation. ❤ Bravos to all involved in this recording!
Very beautiful..always musical and personal with such a great sound. Certainly one of the finest violinists today. Eric Shumsky
