- Marisa and I went to go feed the Big Joe herd a bale of hay and discovered a leg bone in our pasture. After really evaluating it, we couldn't decide if it was a bison or cow (bovine) hoof. Time to check ALL of our bison!

You should create a checklist with the herd id#s so you can just check off quick when needed. Just keep copies in the pickup.
They claim to count the 2x daily.
As the herd expands, it is so much quicker to cross off a number than write them all down. Easier to see which is/are missing, too.
Excel 😊
This is why experience is the best teacher! You both as a team are humble and teachable. Keep up the good work!

No they don't. They check on them at least twice a day. Counting and Checking on them are completely different.
When you have the next Bison processed ask for a lower with the hoof attached also ask if you can get a cow low leg with hoof attached. Then you can compare and know what you are looking at. You may even be take the lower legs to taxidermist so that you have references for the future.
That's actually an excellent educational opportunity. I hope they see your idea and do something similar in the future.
agreed
This is a fantastic idea and if they take to a taxidermist they would have it for reference for years to come and would be very educational!!❤️🥰🇨🇦🙏🏻🍁
Yeah
I’m a pediatric hospital nurse. We use wireless proximity alarm tags on each child, to protect from abduction, and the tags populate a screen on demand. We can see which child is missing if the alarm goes off. Too bad you couldn’t use this on the bison!
Call it morbid curiosity but how often does a child abduction happen at a hospital that you need alarm tags-?
@@DinoGoofHybridHero7531Often enough.

One time is too many.
Growing up in Pennsylvania, our dog would occasionally show up with a few leg. A nearby dairy farm would butcher one cow a year, and they evidently would just throw the leg out. Our collie/shepard would go get it and carry the huge leg home.
She decided that was her treat for the day or a week lol however, long it took her to eat it
My dog brings up deer legs all the time
I'm so happy it wasn't one of your bison. But I am sad for whatever animal it might have been. You two work so well together. ❤
Yeppers, it's time to have an attendance sheet with columns for specifics - need to worm, etc. Then, you'll have records of the daily to reference back to.
Bison/cow/deer/goat/alpacas/elk all have that same shape of hooves - if a cow or bison didn't lose a calf its probably a deer leg, doesn't look heavy enough for an adult cow/bison. If your dog doesn't come when called and you see it with something, laying eyes on what the problem is most important! Dogs can guard but they cant help an animal stuck in fencing or a mud slick they can just show you where to look.
Absolutely priority one is to find out what is behind the dam where the dog was before
I don't think a deer leg is that heavy
Not complicated 😂😂😂😂😂😂 look for the cow/Bison that. Has 3 legs not complicated 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This city girl loves this. Learn so much from you guys.
Always fun to watch You and wife counting all the animals by name or number.
I am just glad we all are on this journey with you all thank you. Eleanor my girl.
Just look for the Bison that only has 3 legs......less complicated! 🙂
Too funny!

Hello Dusty and Marisa
I ❤ Eleanor . Tiny but strong.
I’m glad it’s not every day that you come out and find an animal leg in the yard.
There’s still a mystery, though!
Blessings ❤
~Linda
Oh my lord..l think l held my breath whilst you were counting your 🦬 Bison !! That's a bloody big leg for Jackie to be finding and dragging along !! So glad all presant and corect😮... lil Bullet has grown so much already..l LOVE Dachshunds..had them alllll my life..had my first one age 2..I'm now 64😂..so that's lots of lil Daxies..🇬🇧💕🙏✝️🐕🐾🦬🇺🇸
I also had dachshunds all my life I have 2 with me right now and I've had total of six in my adult hood. when I was 3 years old my parents had 16 dachshunds they showed them bread them. and I love Eleanor she is just the sweetest girl
@dawnyofthelight YAY... Another Dachshund Addict..!! They are small but MIGHTY !! People who don't do their homework on the breed don't realise they are getting dogs that need those walks ans stimulation so they don't get bored and start being destructive..they think they're like a Chiahuahua or Pomeranian and they're SO not a 'handbag' dog🤣.. l have adored every single one of mine.. every one such a different character..my last dog Bertie bit the ankle of a burglar who did a runner 🏃♂️!! I miss not having a Daxie now..but l wouldn't be able to excercise them and that's just not fair..l lost my last cat last Sept to heart disease..so for the first time in my life I don't have a pet dog or cat..!! I do however have a cat 'lodger' who comes in to eat and for shelter because he is shut out every morning when they go to work..so he cannot access food..shelter..or water all day no matter what the weather..and cats are grazers ..they don't eat at set times like dogs do..🇬🇧💕✝️🙏🐾🐕👍
Glad all the bison were accounted for. You have some very beautiful animals.
Jackie is a scavenger to find a leg. I love seeing Eleanor and the bison herd. ❤️🦬❤️🦬
looks like half of a deer hoof. What my kids crazy dogs drug home out of the fields, Deer legs, a deer head, turtles, and god only knows what some of them critters were. Even a few fish out of the pond.
That is so strange yikes! All you videos are interesting no matter what the issues are. Hope everything is ok. Cora is so beautiful now.
I thought Jackie's body language bringing you the leg looked like, "I thought you should see this."
What a good ranch hand. 😁
I Google images of cow hooves and Bison hooves. The Bison hoof looked smaller to me. But I'm so thankful all your bison 🦬 are accounted for. You two are awesome. I absolutely love your channel. Keep it up, stay safe, and be blessed also.
A concrete slab across the creek is a great idea. I've seen that done for cattle and vehicles. Sure would make life easier for both and erosion.
Cheers 👍🐂
Create a spreadsheet with all the ear tag numbers in one column then in the other columns you can put the attendance date at the top and check the box for each number as you see them. Keep a pair of binoculars in the truck for reading the tags from a distance.
Use a drone to “ go” count your herd daily.
Happy to hear your count was where it should be!! ❤
Colene
I'm glad all the bison are accounted for. I thought it might be a deer hoof, but it looked to big. Thank you for sharing ❤
Make s spreadsheet with your ear number, so that you can just check off as you go. It would be easier to do everyday.
Dusty and Marissa we just love your channel. It’s always fun and interesting. Take care and have a good one 👍❤️
I love it that you work the herd together. You've got a good wife there.
She's the one with the really pretty face-- Loved hearing you say that. Would love to see a screen shot of her.
You may want to print up a spreadsheet of your tag numbers and you can simply check them off as you cruise your pasture. Nice work on the burn unit.
Try to get the seed down before you get rain because it will just pack down the dirt and the seed will wash away.
I still think a t-shirt titled “The Jumper” with a bison picture and her # underneath would be a big seller. I would certainly purchase a few! Blessings!
Love watching you work, great team. Impresses me that you know animals by name and number, great job. 🙂
Just make a sheet of all the numbers go out and check off as you see them
I was holding my breath on your last count. Scared me. I am so glad all your bison are there.❤
Dusty's not used to identifying body parts 👍👍
Did a scavenger dig up a dead calf you'd buried on the property? Do you have elk around? Their hooves are similar in shape to Bison. If you search "Bison vs Cow Hoof", there's a good drawing comparison to view, which also shows deer, elk, moose.
Long leg for a newborn calf
@CrossTimbersBison Dusty there is a YT Channel showing how a guy made a 'bridge' with a culvert using BAGS of concrete. Clever and not too difficult.....says the viewer.😊
Thank you!
❤️❤️❤️ Eleanor. Glad she is still there.🙏
If you ever go into a pet store you can find cow hooves for dogs to chew on. They look exactly like that hoof. I would imaging you could ask whoever does your processing about the structural differences.
I'm here for the ranch horses ....seen plenty of Buffalo in my day ...just can't get enough of ranch horses ...❤❤❤thank you for taking time to upload your hard work and dedication shows.....Marcus in west texas
Thank you Marcus! More of Cora to come later
Is that Daniel I know he's been burning? Hope that Thay found an old cow . Thank you for sharing. God bless you and your family .
I thought the same thing.
Hi Dusty, Marissa and Brooke. Great video. Love the new truck bed. Cora is looking magnificent. Bison are looking magnificent. Can't wait for calving to happen. Glad yall got all of your bison. God bless and love yall ❤❤
We live on a “hobby” farm and we always do a head count of each different animal, cows, horses/donkeys, chickens, turkeys, peafowl, goats etc. love watching the bison.
That's a good idea, we have ford's on our place too. You just have to dam the water until the concrete sets😊 xx
Bullet is just too dang adorable ❤
Every week we do a ride around the fence. Sometimes 2 or 3 storms, other cattle by fences Check the creeks and trees. We do a weekly heard check by numbers. If one is missing its usually in the trees or creek unless got a hoof in the fence
WoW... I love how you know all your animals.. That's amazing..😊
I'm so glad that leg wasn't a bison! I was worried, I can only imagine how you all felt!
Were it me, I would pre-print a check list, grouped as you like, so you can take one sheet a day and check them off, making it easier to determine who's present and who's missing.
Thanks for sharing your adventures.. Hope they're all there
Blessings to CTB 🫶🙏🫶🙏
Glad all your bison are accounted for. Yall take care. Love your videos as always.
Must be very strange to find a random hoof/leg on your property! Strange to see, but glad it's not any of yours!
Good evening from Syracuse NY everyone thank you for sharing your adventures and your herds
Oswego here great channel
Yes my friend
Whenever I hear the word "riparian", I immediately think of Hyacinth Bucket (who pronounces her last name "bouquet") from "Keeping up Appearances." 😆I'm glad all your bison are accounted for.
What the heck 😮? Jackie and a darn leg! 😂
Hey Marisa 🌸
Hoss😅Ole goober 🥰🦬
Princess Eleanor!😘🦬💜
Looking great! Always going to be a work in progress. You and Marisa are wonderful stewards of the land! You should feel proud!🙏💜
Hope you find out what that leg is,and hopefully know ones critter!
Great video!🙏🦬🐕🐎🌸🐾💜
Ohh my goodness I hope you find out where that leg bone came from. Eleanor is looking good! The way you had that done is great to help control the erosion.
I am glad to be able to see your daily life!
You two are great owners .I love to watch them all but Love Big Joe and Eleanor. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I’m an archaeologist, and so bone identification was part of my training. There’s not going to be a huge difference in the bones of a cow and a bison, there will be differences, but unless you spent time with both comparing them you’re probably not going to be able to distinguish one from the other on sight. Glad to hear no-one is missing from your herd, but it’s kind of worrying that a piece of someone else’s animal ended up on your property.
Love your videos and enjoy watching them every time. May the lord bless and protect you and your family and the bison and other animals.
Man…. Hoss is getting big.
I can’t believe how Marissa just jumps out and moves those big bison.
I ❤ Eleanor❤
Thanks, that was different best of luck. ✌🏻👊🏼
Like how you put outat hay ,pretty cool!! Hope you guys counted all Bison 🦬 Love n Blessings
Love Eleanor
Hoss is looking better each time you show him, how is his temperament in comparison with the other two bulls? I do so enjoy watching your videos. I keep meaning to order some of your jerkie, and at the very least a hoody or t-shirt. darn! You are cool.
Love the videos, Thank you. Just an idea.... maybe you can use a drone to count the herd? Have the drone take a picture from above to count? Have a great weekend. 👍 😊
Your little Red Dogs are just so precious looking!❤❤❤❤
Thank you for sharing! Blessings 💕🙏🏻💕
Thanks dusy andmaisa for watchn and checking on your herds, you gus take reat cae of these beautiful beasts❤😊
Horses naturally want to run with a herd. Other horses are best, but donkeys, goats, cattle, even bison will do for added security. Extra eyes to check for dangers so the horse can sleep with ease.
Living in the country our bird dogs loved pulling up whatever they could find !
I love all of your videos! You are an amazing family!!!
Thanks for sharing,
Dusty and Marissa, I think that looked like half of a cow hoof. But I only saw it for a few seconds. Two of those make up a cow's hoof. They have a few people that have U Tube channels that trim them.
A slab like DJ and Daniel have? It would be good for the bison not to get caught on the roots also. ❤❤
Bullet is so cute!
I can't find it now, but I agree with the person who said it might be a deer's hoof. 💖🌞🌵😷
The cows look really good! The whole herd looks great, but Lesa and I both noticed how good the cows look.
Thank y’all!
Hello Princess Eleanor ❤❤❤👑👑👑
Dusty, that looks like a cow hoof. Many feed stores and pet stores sell them as dog chew toys.
If you've watched "The Hoof GP" you would know that the hoof is way too narrow for cattle or bison.
Wouldn't it be easier if you make a master copy of all the bison? Then you would just have to check them off or make a note beside them. Like if they need warmer or whatever. I like to make it easy peasy
. Watch all your videos. Glad to see Eleanor.
I would use a plaster cast of a Bison footprint and one of Bovine for comparison. Bullet is a cutie, she loves Brooks car seat because it smells like your sweet B.Have a great weekend. 🎶💐💖
I love watching your Buffalo they are amazing
Your horse was like but Dad I'm hungry lol
I lived on a dairy farm when I was a kid. When it came time for milking, each cow would go in the same spot in the barn. I knew each one by name. Their facial markings were different on each cow, plus the black and white pattern on their body. Those were the good old times! I think it would be hard to tell bison apart since they all look alike. Love watching your channel. 👍😊❤️
Adorable animals ❤. Glad you didn’t lose any of them..
This brings back memories of checking cows with my dad. It’s not easy to count a herd of moving animals!
I want to be on that call. “Hey, did you loose a leg”? Lol
Thanks for the good count. ❤
You are a great teacher, Dusty. I'm anxious to see what kind of leg that is.
Have a blessed day guy's!!!❤😊
God bless you have them all.
I'm glad that you didn't have any missing Bison.
WOW, what dogs will pull up😂❤
Glad your bison are accounted for...
He has that pretty good for erosion now. Nice job. Hopefully, there are no downpours for you. Let it all settle.❤❤❤
It's amazing how you know who they are by looking at them.
They all look alike to me.
in addition I would pick it up and I would put in a bag and also anti- bacterial and anti virus wipes if you start it doing it daily - it becomes a habit and than you are playing it safe for ever safe - your bison are your income now - you need to protect the herd
Another interesting video !
Thanks for sharing !
Thank you
If you pour concrete, remember how slippery it can be, so 'ridges' across it would not only be good for your vehicles' traction but much safer for the bison.
The hoof looks too narrow for even cattle. I'm guessing it could be from a deer?
Happy Trails this weekend you Okies! Sending best wishes from Northern California!!!
I love your videos. Having said that, have you ever been to a burn unit? I have. It is not something I wish to remember.
