Restoring A $7,000 Mansion: Rebuilding The Basement Entrance (Pt. 1)

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 15 ก.ย. 2024
- This video is about rebuilding the basement entrance in my 1917 farm house (mansion).
The video begins by giving a brief scope of work for the day and then quickly into getting things tore apart and rebuilt. The first main task of the day is to remove the soil underneath the house's main entrance-way, brace the walls holding the main entrance-way up, and then remove the old concrete foundation. The second main task of the day was to figure out what supplies will be needed for the underground movie theatre addition, and for the remaining work that needs to be done in the basement.
If you really enjoy this video, no need to worry, there is an incredible amount of mansion to be built! There will be many more videos to come!

I can't believe how strong Roman is. He is such a fine young man. You're fortunate to have him working with you.
Hey, hey, Juston made an appearance...woohoo!
I think we will continue to see Justin less and less.
I love that Cole is still his original, authentic self! I hope he doesn't read the comments because I don't want any of you buzzards making him feel like he has to change everything about himself and the way he does HIS videos just to make a voice few happy. If y'all don't like how he talks, what his volume is, or how many times he says "underground movie theater", you can turn the volume off. Cole got this notoriety and the amount of followers he has because of how he does things. No need to fix what isn't broken.
SAFETY GEAR GENTLEMEN!! You both have families that depend on you being able to see, hear and breathe. It will only take a few seconds to put it on. Please.......a concerned supporting viewer request. You guys are such hard workers. Roman needs a raise.. just sayin'.
You should inquire to see if you can do the septic yourself without certification. States often make provisions for homeowners working on their own stuff.
Iowa takes groundwater safety very seriously. They used to let homeowners do there own...... and realized letting homeowners do their own thing was not safe for the groundwater which we all drink from.
@vespermk A owner installed system has same inspections and requirements as a contractor installed systems.
@@vespermk Colorado is quite stringent due to how many states rely on water sourced from the mountain sources here. Homeowners are still allowed to do their own, it just needs to be engineered & stamped, and then inspected.
If I had $1 for every time Cole said underground movie theater, I could build a underground movie theater 😂🤣
Or "Main Heated Shed"
Or underneath of it
If Cole had $1 for every time he says it maybe he wouldn’t have to live with his mommy & daddy anymore
@@beck1365 low iq comment
@@beck1365 dude. not cool. i bet you still live with "mommy and daddy"
Roman should make a channel called Roman the rockstar with different POVs of the build I’d watch both channels all day
IF Roman did that, this job would take FOREVER! The editing alone would take up so much time, the job would take the next 20 years to complete!!
Roman is getting more and more buff with all his shovel work! Cole too but I noticed Roman today! No need for a gym!❤
hes already smoking hot from arm wrestling!!
Good to see Justin. Can’t wait until the walls get put in
Roman needs holiday pay for Monday's work! When Roman gets working he really is a beast!
Might call and double check that you as the homeowner can do it yourself.
In my county in kansas, a contractor has to be approved and certified to do the work. BUT, as the homeowners... I was able to do my entire septic system myself. I just had to have the environmental guy test my soil, discuss the plans and measurements with him, and then he came out to do 3 inspection at predetermined points in the project prior to me back filling. Cost me $4,000, he said that the local companies would have charged me $14,000 - 20,000! Made all the hard work WELL worth it!!!!!
Cole is a young man, I hope he gets his underground movie theater built and he and his family enjoys it until he’s a real old old man.
Cole you and Roman work so well together!!!!!!!!! You are learning so much remodeling your home, the work is hard and the days are long. But the pride you will have after you will be able to tell your children that you built everything in the home!!!!!❤
Looks like Cornstarch learns him some Ukraine.
Only if He could Learn that they are called Footings and NOT Footers!!
I hope you pay Roman well, he's a hard worker.
Did you notice when hard work starts Cole has to go play on daddy's computer?
@@BobBorn-ef3li and what's wrong with that? He is the Boss
You need to paint the rubberized waterproofing on the outside of the wall before you put the dimple board on depending on what the membrane is that you use behind the dimple board. It may need both.
No
Cole your smile and excitement is infectious I'm so happy for you Nave and the boy's. Roman is a great part of the Corn Star family as a hard worker and also a good friend. He is a good man and an intelligent one also. Love to all the families!❤
Intelligent, He calls them a FOOTER, there is NO Such word!!
My mouth is watering for those beautiful tomatoes!!
Before you install that last footer and patch of wall below the stairs you should dig a hole/trench from the outside underneath the foundation and use that to slide the 40 foot I-beam into place. Seems to me like it'd be the easiest way.
That was my thought too.
Isn’t there a tree, patio and driveway on that side of the house?
Must lots of money in videos. There's reasons why septic systems are so high !! $2000.00 lol
☝️Or slide it in through the place it's going to rest from under the front porch. 40 foot I-Beam is massively heavy. Trying to jockey that around, if you even can, has a high probability of someone getting hurt. Put a hole in the top plate area to the outside and slide it in. On motion and your done.
I agree if want the 40 foot beam in one piece it's gonna need be be slid in under the foundation. Can't see any way a 40 foot beam fits in through a 10 foot hole in the middle of the foundation. Or think you'll have to cut it in 2 sections and weld it together inside the basement
You are a hard worker! I love watching you, friends and family .❤😊🎉
That theatre would make a wonderful underground storm shelter too. With Aloha...
Survive the apocalypse with popcorn and twizzlers.
Yup, as long as he gives it 2 different exits at opposite ends in case the house collapses, covering one of them. Unlikely it will cover even one, but covering 2 would be unbelievable.
Good to see Roman wearing hearing protection. When he loses his eyesight from cement chunks, his good hearing will help him navigate.
He actually uses echolocation like bats
I taught Elementary School for 20 years. I should’ve worn ear protection, but that would’ve been frowned upon. Now I have hearing loss.
Cole should have the driest basement in america😅
YOUz work at OSHA?
Thanks for the video, Cole. You and Roman are beasts / go getters!!
You guys are very hard workers. Also, Cole, you have nice handwriting.
Content is epic over the years. Outstanding adventure!
Good to see Roman back on the scene.
Nothing gets done except a lot of yelling when roman is gone
Roman is an amazing young man! So glad you have him. Thank you to Roman as well as Justin! Salute 🫡 to you guys! You’re doing a bang up job!❤😊
It was so nice to see Justin again and that sweet smile of his looking forward to seeing you all together again 😊
Sooo happy you shared this.
Made my day!
Sure look forward to these videos! House is going to be spectacular!and Roman…… safety goggles my man!
This is just what I needed after a bad day, Thank you so much x
I like watching this reno, something different from a summer of spraying
Ever notice how Cole has the easy jobs and Roman has the muscle job? Hope Cole is paying him well.
“Teachers pointer stick”
😂 Roman, gotta luv’em
I grew up on a farm and am very familiar with drainage tile and how it works,... but still.... I find it amazing how dry that dirt where the theater will be is being kept. Just amazing, especially considering the amount of water that was coming into that big hole while you were digging it!!
Juston! Woot woot! Nice to see you again.😊
Hi Juston!!
Yay, Roman! Nice seeing u again, Juston. Cole the maths u did made my mind boggle.❤
I don't understand why Roman is hiding the whole Malcom in the Middle thing. Is he hiding? Then why go on TH-cam at all? It's OBVIOUS that Roman is the kid that played Reese in the 90's sitcom Malcom in the Middle. I mean, that Ukrainian accent isn't fooling anyone. PLEASE ROMAN. COME CLEAN. AND WHAT DID YOU DO WITH DEWEY?
Next you'll ask why someone who's supposedly a civil engineer is working as a farm laborer.
Roman is a beast! Look at those arms. Good for you young man.
and that body is 🔥🔥🔥
As a 4th generation rancher, I think the key to a good pork chop is to throw it away and cook a ribeye. Pork, the other unnecessary meat. LOL..
In South Africa pork mutton and chicken fall into vegtable catogory
What a great adventure this has been! Anticipating each new video! Thanks for sharing!
From a professional basement owner perspective I would recommend to use a cement based watersealer on the inside of the walls. Water, humidity and condensation on the inside of the wall sounds scary.
Juston making a cameo! 😊
I love Coles' specifics and detail. You put SO much into your vids. Your energy amazes me.
Vertical Integration Cole. The business that comes from installing septic tanks can support farm business. Sounds like a great plan. I’m amazed at just how much I learn on this channel.
14:52 now that roman did all the digging cole decides that he should do materials later to unwind insted of qasting the rest if the day. Perfect example of cole avoiding the heavy work.
Justin , nice to see him. Roman the teacher.😊 That is true good food. Nice hand writing.
Roman is "The Coolest Guy" in all of IW !!!!
Yea!! Thanks Cole! God bless your family!
You are killing it in this content.
Much respect!
I hope you see this comment. I just saw yesterday that Roger Wakefield reacted to your video about plumbing your basement and actually gave some tips and pointers. I thought it might be a good watch before concreting the floor, just in case you might want to implement some of the things. Love your videos and Roman is just awesome! Really good work ethics and just a genuinely great guy
ground is drying up, you guys did a great job!
Cole, it's better to heat the grill up before brushing off the grates. They clean off much better/easier then.
Keep up all the awesome work everyone is doing have fun injoy your day be safe
Wow ! This is a big job for just a handful of guys. You go and get her done.
WOW WOW it was great to see Justin and you and everybody has been helping your clothes with doing a great job I'm very impressed
Still amazing work for Roman and Cole on all the research to do list keep it up 👊👊👊👍👍👍
That’s another way of thinking, that would be beneficial to you in the long term. Broaden your skills and abilities to use in your business.👍⭐️
Good to see justin again. I'm looking forward to him coming back.
Cole, your intelligence and ability to learn anything you put your mind to is fascinating and makes me quite envious! Your attention to detail would make you an incredible contractor with added integrity that many do not have. I may not always understand most of the "construction aspect" of what you are doing, but I am thoroughly entertained and educated while I watch!! Thank you and God bless! PS Roman is a Rockstar beast!
Justin good to see him back. You guys make me tired with all that earth moving 😅
Good to see Justin again.
I really want to see how much water comes out of those drains after a big rain.
Thanks for your videos on this renovation and improvements, always enjoy your intelligence and integrity, while doing the improvements. Thank you.
I love all of your videos. They are my favorite on TH-cam. Thank you for sharing them with us and all your hard work both you and Roman.
20:00 glad to see Roman using the safety squints!!
Your writing is so neat, in the UK we call the membrane on the walls tanking x
Omg Cole I can’t even tell u how big I smiled when u said “hey everybody ur watching cole the cornstar” I know I know I make way too big of a deal but a lot of us have been missing it and who cares what the rest think bahaha! Just love it and love ur house and I think ur sweet wife and babies will flourish once u move in! I can’t wait to see it! I think u both deserve it based on how humble u both seem thru the screen lol
Wow Cole u have really nice handwriting. Ur so smart too. Ur boys will sponge all of that in and be such well rounded men!!
Roman is a freaking BEAST no joke!! Hey guston!!
Just an awesome video Cole and Roman. Nice to see you again Justin. Keep on keeping on.
Yahoo. New video. Thanks for sharing!! Keep up the good work on the mansion!!
Put a hole into the outside wall n slide the beam threw it using chains n pulleys
Exactly what I was going to recommend. I saw it done on this old house. Just install then patch the house …..easy !!
Am excited to see it all together once the house is done being built
MrPostFrame did his own septic system and I believe he is in central Iowa. He did a video about the process. Plus seeing the screen of the application with the companies about doing soil test. It was nice seeing a company I know, my uncle used to work for one of the listed ones
Here’s an example of what a 5 inch i-beam can support… an i-beam with a depth of section of 5 inches, a flange width of 3 inches, and a flange thickness of 0.326 inches can bear 10 pounds per foot. In other words, do a little research before committing to a size.
Doesn't the length of the i-beam matter as well?
I have a lot of fun when i watch your Videos greetings from Germany
You're doing an amazing job Cole and Roman!!
The best thing I have noticed lately is you have a cricket helping out with singing support. (There is something about them being good luck, so let us know!
In this video Roman removed some dirt and concrete from the basement, Cole cooked pork for lunch, and Cole ordered dimple board for the basement. Oh yeah, and Cole talked a bunch.
Very loudly............
I believe the rule is to always keep the employee busy otherwise you are paying him for nothing. Cole is the employer after all.
"There's real work to be done, I'm going to puss out and go play on the computer."
It's coming along, keep up the good work.
After getting quotes in the $10k range to replace the drain field in my 4br 3ba home, I decided to do mine myself too. The 3 most difficult things I remember from doing this was 1. Finding a wholesale company who would sell me the drainfield vaults. (I finally found a well and septic wholesale supplier in my area who agreed to sell them to me). 2. Leveling the bottom of the drainfield after excavating. (I later watched a septic company in my area replace my neighbors drainfield using the same vaults I used and they leveled 2 aluminum rails on either side of the rectangular drain field hole and then used these as a screed to level the bottom with compacted sand - MUCH FASTER to do it this way. 3. I didn't own a transit and when I laid this out I believed from eyeballing this - doing a gravity feed from the existing septic tank (it was pretty deep) to the new drain field location might not be possible. As a result, I purchased a plastic 500-gallon pump tank that I put between the septic tank and drain field to pump the effluent into the drain field vaults. A buddy came over AFTER I had purchased and installed the pump tank with his transit and I learned (too late) that although it was very close, I actually could have done a gravity feed to my drain field eliminating the electric pump and tank and saved some more money. Total cost including the pump tank, pump, electrical hook up, vaults, and 4" septic pipe - about $3k. I reused the existing concrete septic tank as it was in good condition. Go for it and save the money - you are more than capable and the building code in your area will tell you what the requirements are. The county came out and did a perk test for me to pull the permit and then they told me how deep the top of the vaults needed to be. It was pretty easy overall to do. P.S. We have VERY strict building codes here and I was able to do this without being licensed. (Licensure here requires an apprenticeship). Most jurisdictions will allow the homeowner to pull their own permits without being certified and will simply inspect the work to be sure you do it properly. I bet you only need to be licensed if you were doing it commercially. Check with your permitting office - typically there are exemptions for homeowners installing themselves. Cole - you are NOT a contractor - you are a homeowner doing the work yourself - big difference.
Amazing! How much time did it take for you to design and complete the installation?
@@probablynot1368 It only took about 1 week to read the building code about septic drain fields and total install time was about 1 week after I got the results of the perk test back from the county. Not long. When the inspector came to inspect my new drain field before backfilling it - he said he had cancelled all of his appointments for that day and was pretty surprised that he passed it first try - he figured since I was a homeowner it would be a crap show. Anyway, everything is written in the code and luckily they guy I hired to dig the hole had done septic systems before and confirmed that what I was doing was correct. :)
Coming along nicely Cole And Nice Work Roman on Digging out under the stairs
Safety glasses gentlemen 😮
Agree. Only takes one second for accident to happen that changes a life forever! Protect those beautiful eyes 👍
Thanks for sharing ❤. Good to see Justin
Is it just me or does Cole’s videos fly by?
I can barely make it through them anymore
🙋♀️So happy to see Justin🤸♀️
Lol Roman, calling the prybar a teachers pointing stick
That underground theater will cost more than the rest of the house.
Without Roman this job would never get done.
Justin! We miss you!!!
Love these home reno videos
salt and pepper are essential for grilled food, but ya left out a few others lol (laughs in southern cooking) Thanks for the dimpleboard lesson btw!
Cole, double check your septic tank certification requirements. It may be different from Washington state, but here if you can do a simple gravity system you can still do your own install, just need to get someone to design it for you. Doing it myself cut the cost from $25k to $12k plus permit. A pumped drain field had to be done by a "professional".
I really like this house project; super interesting.
Do you think the original builders were saying to each other “No one will ever notice that we didn’t support this under the stairs part. What they don’t know won’t hurt them. We can go home early.” We’ve always got to wonder what they were thinking. NTB. 💙
That's 100% what they were thinking. Most building code didn't happen until the last 50 years.
At the end of the day, they built a house that has stood for one hundred years. In Iowa. Cole is honoring it's heritage by ensuring it has a chance for one hundred more. Respect.
I can’t believe as you tapped on the wall just after the two minute mark it actually moved WOW 😮
I had an idea that would be really neat. The outside wall of the basement, inside wall of the theater, can be sealed to preserve the stones in the concrete. When the sealant is applied, the pieces of granite, crystals, and other pretty stones would make a beautiful wall...just a neat way to remember your great grandfather. 😊❤
I’d be interested in seeing a drawing of what the garage extension with underground movie theatre is going to look like. I’m having a hard time visualizing it. Especially how it ties into the existing house. My apologies if I’ve missed it somehow.
Enjoying the remodel, excellent content.
Wondering what the square footage will be after the remodel, I guess currently it is five thousand square feet.
Sure!! Anything to keep from helping with physical labor!!
Brovo cole, safety
First always, stay
Safe😊
