  • 3 garage door improvements/repairs you can do in one day. After one of the springs on the garage door broke I decided to upgrade a few other items. I replaced the garage door opener, replaced weather stripping on the bottom of the door and added insulation.

      Glad you fixed the slack issue, however you should really change the position of the door bracket from the top of the door to right beneath the strut. With that said, reverse the way you have the operator arm & elbow attached. The arm and elbow should make a general check mark shape, approximately 45°-75° of an angle.
      Trust me, it works much better this way.
      Edit: Six more things to note....
      1: if you do what I said with the opener bracket and arm, your door will go up further to match the height of the header, from what I see it is sitting below the header, not giving you the full extension.
      2. Photo sensors are best 6-12 inches from the ground, low is good, however, it is best if you have them near the point of a bumper or point of first contact of a wheel, the latter of which is my preference. If it is too low it gives slight seconds less time for the sensors to be tripped I itiating the safety reverse, seconds that could save you a lot of money and time.
      3. Your operator could be lowered (from my guess) 3-5 inches, which greatly reduces stress on the door when it runs. Yes, struts help, but you have a non insulated door (putting insulation in does not fix this issue) it generally forms stress cracks in the top of the panel given enough time, or if a stressful event occurs (hitting the doors, spring failure mid cycle, etc.)
      4. When you talk about lubricating a door, show them helpful places to hit, including wheels (especially if you have bearings), pulleys, if applicable, springs, operator rails and bullet system, as well as hinges. Noting you sprayed the side track.....it is good in thought, but the wheels do not actually touch where you sprayed. Run the door up and spray in the rounded part of the track where the wheels actually run along, best to start at the curve of the track and run the spray down to the floor. Another tip, if your door is still creaking, manually operate the door and spray between the panels....run it a few times and wipe the excess, it usually does the trick. In between seasons this happens often.
      5. When adding insulation it can add as much as 10-25 lbs. to the weight of the door, which in most cases is too much for the springs that are initially with the door, meant for it's original weight.
      6. When uninstalling an old opener there is almost never a need to remove the belt/chain, or the rail itself. You only gave yourself more work.
      J & B Garage Doors, 50 years family O&O
      Best of luck in your endeavors.

      @@influxedhoc Really good advise for anyone undertaking garage door DIY :). I would also add that the bottom brackets the cables attach to on the door are under a massive amount of tension. In the video at 9:49 when the weather seal is being installed the DIYer removes a screw from the bottom of this bracket. Whatever you do, do not remove the rest under any circumstances!

    I actually installed a new garage door opener two weeks ago. I must admit, I was a bit intimidated by the prospect of the DYI factor. It took a couple hours to complete but with the good instructions it came with, it was actually an easy job even for a first time. I'm 67 years old and was able to do it all myself. We went 15 years after this house was built before a tension spring busted, then just over a year later it happened again. I replaced it last time my self and saved hundreds, the only tricky part is ordering the correct size spring but there are plenty of measuring guides and getting the Right or Left wind correct other than that it's a simple job, I even got a free set of cables with the spring order so I changed them also, I still have the liftmaster motor, I keep thinking it will die soon but it keeps on ticking and I just keep the tension springs and chain lubricated, Your channel is great.

    When removing the old opener you don't need to take the chain and rail off separately. Just pull the pin out of the front and unbolt the motor from the angle iron

    • @scrugaa

      or unbolt the opener from the celling bracing then old by the electric cord all the way to the ground then remove from the wall

      I'm a garage tech. I use a 6ft ladder to take down the motor then rest it on the ladder. I use a 4ft ladder to undo the rail at the ladder, rest it on the spring but make sure the motor is in a proper position on the 6ft ladder so it doesn't slip off. Life the motor and rail off both ladders, set on the ground. Removing a motor for a new install only takes a couple of minutes.

    A few things that you need change (1) The hockey arm Is upside down (2) the opener mount is installed to the top strut it needs to be installed on the center style of the door. If you keep it on the strut, this will damage the strut also it will damage your top section. Never use lube on the tracks lube only the roller shafts and garage door hinge, springs and bearings. By lubing the track the will collect dust and prevent the rollers to roll. Also, you need to release the spring on the belt to keep nice and tight.
    Just an FYI I have 20 years in the garage door industry.

    • @influxedhoc
      @influxedhoc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The best lubricants for doors are silicone based sprays that dont attract dust anyway. Spraying the rounded parts of the track helps a considerable amount with friction. (Fyi, dust will settle there on it's own, having some lube is a plus).

      When the manufacturers start installing and repairing doors themselves, then they can say what is best for it. 50 years of experience in the field of the craft itself is better insight than the "suggested best course" of the manufacturers who generally dont have a clue as to what is going on.
      Not being rude, just being honest. The DIY people know more than they do.
      Edit:
      A silicone oil is any liquid polymerized siloxane with organic side chains. The most important member is polydimethylsiloxane. These polymers are of commercial interest because of their relatively high thermal stability and their lubricating properties.
      Cleaning then is a good thing, but maybe 0.01% of owners will ever do it, and even less is the number of doormen that will take the time to do it while on the job.

    Good idea to just lube the roller bearings , the metal to metal hinge points on the hinges and the springs. Also, when replacing the bottom weather strip . Leave a couple of inches on each end then tuck them into the strip, that way the weather strip won’t move from side to side as the weather changes.

    Hey there. Just a tip. I am a garage door professional, and I deal with all of this stuff every day. If I were you, I would add some more tension to that belt. You want it to be taught, not overly tight, but enough that it doesnt sag down like that when in the "up" position. Doing this will prevent the belt from slipping off the gear on the opener head, and avoid the possibility of the whole door falling down while operating. If the belt slips, so will the door. Great video!

    • @pyropreacher1438
      @pyropreacher1438 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just curious how the whole door will fall down when the springs are what holds the door in place and not the opener. If the door is balanced properly it shouldn't just fall to the ground should it?

    • @jordanhigginson7127
      @jordanhigginson7127 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pyropreacher1438 you are correct. If the springs are property balanced, the door should rest at the bottom, middle, and up positions. Key word if. Years of not tuning the springs will cause them to loose tension. However, there are many homeowners that are unaware if springs are under-wound, or even broken. Given the chance that a spring could be not properly wound or broken, it is possible for a belt that loose to slip, causing the door to come crashing down. This is under the circumstance that the door isnt balanced and hasnt been tuned up in quite some time( in my experience, most people dont care to tune up a door often). But, yes you are right, given that the door is balanced, there would be no danger of the belt slipping, but it is always better to be safe than sorry, and have your door fall on your vehicle while backing out :)

    I do garage doors and garage door openers for a living, really great and helpful video for home owners, one thing tho the belt has quite a bit of slack in it when opening shouldn’t be a problem or anything but that could be caused by the spring tension not being quite enough, or the belt just needs to be tightened more , what I do is once the belt seems tight enough give it a couple good tugs away from the rail and then tighten it down again so that it is fully parallel with the gdo rail

      Franco Lopez adding a few more winds doesn’t make it better it just picks the weight up off the ground then at which point it will be over tensioned and exceed force settings the proper most efficient way is to change the springs when you add insulation. Having the proper springs with proper ippt rating gives your springs the proper amount of life cycles. Adding extra weight to an existing spring can cause it to break prematurely

    Dude, this is great. I never even knew they had belt driven garage door openers. Ours are chain driven, and I hate the loud sound, as does my son who has sensitivity issues. I will look into a conversion kit for my garage doors. Also, I love the way you say "trolley". Please release a rap single about trolleys. I'd buy it.

    Good everything, except
    1) bracket attaching arm to door is in the wrong spot (very bad location) should be attached to stile not the strut
    2) arm is upside down
    3) belt is way too loose
    Great choice in all products, I would certainly recommend them all.
    Just a garage door technician with 22 years and counting experience trying to help and make good great!

      Also the reason why your garage door doesn’t open all the way is 2 reasons, 1, the drive arm that the trolley uses to open and close the door is installed completely wrong. 2, your garage door is 8 feet tall, so you need the 8 foot extension

    Here in Brazil, fortunately (or not) we have a pretty good weather during the whole year, so we don't use insulation foam. The bad part of it is when you need some of that pink foam to make a rc airplane or wing. 😕

    The installation was pretty good. You may want to look into a opener reinforcement bracket. The bracket Chamberlain provides is ment to be through bolted on a wood door. Also your belt is loose. I have been doing garage doors for a decade now.

      It’s meant to be installed on steel. How many wood doors do you install these days. Most doors are foam injected with steel plates in hinge and bracket locations. Might be different in other parts of the world though I guess

      The j-arm bracket that comes with the lift masters/chamberlain is perfectly fine for steel, as long as the door is properly balanced and lubricated. Just make sure it’s installed into a steel reinforcement rib in the panel. You also want to put it closer to the top of the panel and not the center. The j-arm reinforcement you’re speaking of is best used with steel back doors made by Amarr/Pella, because they do not have a reinforcing rib under the steel back in the center, so often times the J-arm bracket rips out with even the slightest bit of drag or misbalance.
      The belt is too loose and the rail isn’t level. I recommend adjusting that closer to level with a no more than an inch of difference from either end.
      Keep in mind, when adding insulation, though it’s polystyrene it still adds weight to the door and I do recommend a professional verify that the door is still balanced.
      Lubrication is verify important
      However, spraying the track is a waste of lubricant and can be extremely messy. I recommend using a Teflon based product and only spray moving parts such as rollers springs hinges and bearings. And as frequent as every 3-6 months.
      Don’t forget to get your annual inspections either. You’d be surprised how much you can catch before it becomes an expensive problem.
      I have 15+ years experience with residential garage repair and installation.

    Great job and thank you for the video. One thing I'd like to add for everyone; never lube the track or spray lube on the wheels like you did in the video. The wheels are a semi sealed unit and are made to ROLL. When you spray lube in the track, the wheels tend to DRAG and not ROLL adding to the garage wheels and track to wear improperly. To keep your track and wheel system running good, spray just a very small amount where you can see the inside of the wheels and the system around the shaft. Try to keep the lube out of the track. Thanks everyone.

      I was thinking the same thing but I would not use WD-40 it has cleaners in it and take way grease a spray grease on the bearings is all you need to keep them water resistant. That can be applied buy gloved finger in tiny amounts. WD-40 will also leave a film that holds dirt.
