    As for the colors of the film, they remind me of old ORWO kolor negative film from the 80's and, yes, they are similar to Lomography Metropolis. And, because it's ORWO, it should be filmed with Praktica VLC and Carl Zeiss Jena Pancolar 50mm f1.8 lens. This would be the actual retro experience.

  • @thedondeluxe6941

    It looks a whole lot like Lomo Metropolis. I would like to see it tested in a really high end camera with very sharp glass, to see what it can really do. I just got my 10 rolls of Santa Color, and I'm very happy so far. Great consumer film with rich, vivid colours. I hope you guys can continue providing that film stock in the future!

      I know it's been a year, but it's not metropolis. NC400, NC500, Metropolis, and Lomo colour 92 all are made in the same factory and formulated by the same people and thus are very similar.

      @@elk3407 Yep, I've tested it too now and it's not Metropolis. I rather like NC500. Rated at ISO 200, it has a nice vintage look.

    Orwo used to be the main film producer for the Estern Block back in the day. So maybe an Exakta Varex with a 75mm f/1.5 Biotar or a Flektogon

    This new orwo film looks a lot like Lomochrome Metropolis to me. Allegedly Lomochrome films are made in the same factory as Orwo films, but I wonder if similarities between grain structure and other potential details can be found. For instance, does the new Orwo film have a green base like Lomochromes? I'd like to see the physical negatives in the next video.

    • @laserdonut4632
      @laserdonut4632 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does indeed! Ribsy has posted a Review on his blog with a photo of the negatives. They are greenish-transparent, looks very similar to Metropolis.

    I think you should use a camera with correct times and a good sharp lens. You can’t put it in your Leica if you want to. I’d be more interested in seeing pictures from different scenarios and exposure ratings. Like how does 320 look different from 400 ASA? Foliage and skin tones, night scapes shot wide open and handheld. How does it respond to tungsten light, and how well can tungsten shots be corrected during scanning? Also scans from a Frontier would be nice, simply because it has a really good benchmark look we can base evaluations on.

      @@NicosPhotographyShow Today I have received news from ORWO. Here is the original mail I´ve got:
      ORWO Film
      Thank you for your email and your patience; All the films are scheduled to be dispatched today to the spooling. The printing of the boxes started on Friday and the DX codes are being prepared. So we will be able to start delivering in approximately 14 working days. Since our machine in China had been shut off to us for almost the whole year, it has created unprecedented delays. To solve this we looked high and low and tested multiple other vendors. We finally found two that were suitable and have commissioned them. In the meantime we have designed and started to build our own machine for germany. This will be ready early next year. And now we have also entered into a partnership agreement with a European company to be our photo finisher in January, whilst we wait for our machine to be finished. Sincere apologies for the delay, but now we have fixed this, we have multiple contingencies so that it never becomes a bottleneck again. Some more good news! We have another NEW colour stock ready. This will start spooling at the same time. We will let you know when it is ready. We are nearly there. Thank you again for your patience.

    • @michaeldimmitt2188
      @michaeldimmitt2188 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah! Can I assume that you are doing similar? I want to try with my Mamiyaflex C2 but not waste film. Haven’t found any clear directions online. The amoun of paper that gets wound up at the beginning of a 120 roll would be a lot of wasted 35mm “leader”. If I could find out how much then I could attach that much extra leader to the start of the roll.
      The next question is how far through the roll of normal 36 exposures would the 12 shots at 60mm go? The Mamiyaflex winder only allows 12 exposures, though I could guess guess the winds after and keep exposing. There is no multi-exposure prevention or anything to stop you taking shots after the end of the 12.
      Sorry to dump such a reply to your comment but I haven’t been able to find much about doing this and I really want to!

    I preordered and have not received them. I'm not particularly upset about someone selling it currently if that person was the actual coater, though I do hope they have made true movement on getting the film out to buyers very soon. I could see creating a new color film from some level of "ground-up" being a bit grungy or weird ... so I'm not too bothered by the quality, though I'll probably try bracketing between 200 and 320 when I hopefully do get mine. I also think the Ferrania kickstarter supporters should kind of get over it by now? It was a highly conditional goal that had a very narrow window that got slammed shut hard. Kickstarters are not pre-sales or even catalog purchases ... the best way to get Ferrania color now is to buy their superior quality B&W. As for Orwo, I do hope they can clear up some questions and get this film out soon. I badly want them to succeed, even if it never surpasses gritty consumer quality. Consumers expect different things from film now, and honestly, the grit and contrast probably match that better than older-style stocks like Portra.

  • @Blofeld76

    Use pre-Ai Nikkor lenses of different focal lengths. Daylight street photography would probably give most versatile results to see film's characteristics. You could add some lowlight pictures also.👌

  • @DethronerX
    @DethronerX ปีที่แล้ว

    To me, personally, i would look at the results of someone else to get an idea if i like the look. To me, the physical medium is a good experiment to do without much on post, if you are looking for dynamic range, because you can get it a lot on the new Kodak and digital photography, so everything doesn't need to have a lot of post production spectrum and I love what you get through the lighting, camera and developing and it helps me think of where i would use it, or what kind of a movie I can use the look in.
    From the results you and some others posted, i like the desaturated oily green look and it kind of forms a color grade of its own and doesnt need much on post (maybe if you want to add a warm filter on shoot or post), and on the shoot if we want to under or overexpose it.
    Its possible like you say, that its rehousing old stock, but either way, id use it when it came on 16mm, at least as one short film or a music video, for sure, without worrying about what i cant get from the highlights and shadows. Id use it as a contrast based film

    I don't think the camera matters as much as the lens. More precisely, I'd like to see a mix of shots with different lenses in different conditions of different subjects. I'd like to see a couple of portraits with a 90 or 100, some daytime street scenes, and something with dramatic colors like indoor performers in costumes with bright reds and yellows. I just think if we know it is competitive with Portra or 400H, let's explore where we can use it. Cheers

    While I agree that selling the film at a show is a little shady, I also understand as an engineer what it's like to knock off a prototype for a show to get the word out on something that's close to market. It could be that they did a short run for the show to test things but they are not quite sure about the color balance, etc. enough for general release. They problem with sending out a prototype to the public is that the look of the film will become expected and will then become difficult to tweak against the expectation. It's probably lots of trial and error in getting the process and formula balances just right and the resources at Orwo aren't what they were at Kodak circa 1990, when Kodak had a dozen color film varieties (I think there were 5 Ektachromes in an add I found). Give them a little more time.

    Thanks. I reminder that around 1970, ORWO color from the German Democratic Republic was the only one I could afford. The developed film was not orange and the colors made sense to me for a negative: complementary. Sky was red, red roof tiles were blue. The Swiss flag was blue with a black cross.The prints were fairly flat and grayish. But OK for me, they had COLOR!

It doesn't seem honest to me and I don't think I will buy any if I do find some with that being the case. I'd hate to have backed and not received the film and see others being able to buy it. Thanks for this opinion video Nico, I am still waiting for my rolls but still hopeful they will arrive one day. I would love to see you shoot it on a camera with good glass and aperture priority for metering because I feel like there is a level of consistency to that method which would be valuable. My choice would be a Nikon FM3A with 50mm 1.2 AIS, but there are many options. For motive, perhaps a mixed bag, definitely some skin tones, shadows vs highlights, points of light..

  • @yogurette8831
    @yogurette8831 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think you should shoot it with either a high quality kit like a Leica m with a summicron, since then you can really see what this film is able to provide. The other option would be a Cannon AE 1/Pentax k1000 with the nifty 50 or any ,,basic" slr since those are the cameras that got many of us started, thus we sort of know what to expect. As for the style of shooting: I would love to see a mixture. You have 36 Exposures so why not throw in a few portraits to check for skin tones, shoot some indoors for available light situations. Maybe some street in harsh light and maybe also a bit of landscape. Just give a good mix, I think you won't be able to satisfy every shooting style anyway so a little bit of everything might just be the right compromise. Also please consider the other comments who mention that a print would be nice to check results since scans vary extremely depending on what equipment you use.
    As for preordering and not selling: Sketchy and they really need to come forward and give a statement about their situation.

    I would love to shoot a roll with my Canon AE-1 Program with a Canon 35-70 F4 zoom. I would shoot both landscape, people, and portraits and compare with my normal stock of Ektar, Pro Image 100, and Kodak Gold. I have a tripod Mount for two cameras that I can shoot side-by-side. If I get this roll I will compare this with Pro Image 100 side-by-side with a Canon A1. I will use the same lens and use the same aperture. It will be a fun shoot.

    I have seen images of this film but I cannot remember where. I was surprised that another colorfilm has been introduced. If I am not mistaken, the film was produced in Germany then the film is shipped to Shanghai/China for cutting and packaging and then shipped around the world. Kind of wired.
    Orwo was a AGFA plant 100km or so south of Berlin. Orwo has become very popular in India (Bollywood), so I have heard. Therefore they could survive many difficult times.
    I don't like the film. I think Fuji C200 is much better and I don't like this film either.

    Looks a bit like Metropolis. I think ORWO has merged with Inoviscoat, which was responsible for making Metropolis for Lomography?

    • @studiosnch
      @studiosnch ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct. Filmotec GmbH (ORWO basically) merged with Inoviscoat and another company, hence the restructuring. But no one became bankrupt. On a related note, Inoviscoat is the supplier for ADOX's Color Mission, which as part of the restructuring had to cease their work on that project.

    I always find it difficult to judge a negative film by a scan. There are so many factors that have an influence how it looks. At least the convertingsoftware is another factor. Would like to see prints from it. These scans looks a bit too harsh and green tinted for me. May be someone likes it this way but i would like to see some daylight shots of colourfull and neutral motives and if possible prints…

    This looks like a film that will be less like digital and more like films of 20-30 years ago. Kodak has been playing catch-up with digital photography, for all the wrong reasons... and while there has been great innovation at Kodak because of it, their color films have become rather bland and desaturated. Nico, of course you have got to shoot M6 on the street with this stuff!

    Oh, and this film is based on AGFA 320XT, so why it is not marked for 320 ASA/ISO makes no sense, but at least the guy told you the truth.

    I'd like to see the results of this film shot with an Olympus OM1 using a 135mm or 24mm (ish) lens. It's always cool to have another option for film. Have you hear of any chance of this in 120 format?

    Given the “consumer grade” look I’d like to suggest a “reasonably” priced point-and-shoot; like an Olympus XA or a mju. I’m sure it’d compliment the faded 90s look and give a “memory” from yesteryear feel. Shooting it with an slr perhaps would give better results technically, but from the pictures you’ve shown to us I don’t feel technical optimum it’s this film main perk.

    I don't mind if they took an opportunity to sell a few directly to people, maybe its an advance batch for quality control checking of the process in their Chinese packager. 500 isn't much maybe they'd rather not have a few rolls go out before the main load is packaged. I will be excited when my rolls arrive, and I am happy to risk some money to give a company a chance to make a new film. :)

    Please shoot it with some rather generic SLR like Canon AE-1/P, Pentax K-1000 or Olympus OM-10 with basic 50mm to give us a baseline to which can most people relate to.
    I'd like it see some daylight street photo and golden hour portraiture.
    The side be side comparison with Kodak Gold or Portra would be absolutely awesome too.

    Nikon F3 with Zeiss 35mm f/2.0 ZF.2 lens. Pre-orders should receive first the film, before it is sold to the general public. It is ethically not correct how they handle the situation. I will not buy this film and support this behavior.
