Tooling Out Big D

- Finally getting around to putting tools and rigging out Big D so it's ready to go whenever. Then we had a couple recoveries up in the snow. One an SUV had slid off the road into a large rock. So we pulled it out and put it on the trailer and hauled it to the shop. Then a ranch truck way out in Beef Basin had a fuel filter housing break so we went in and wheel lifted it out and got it back down to the ranch for repairs. Then we installed 2 Apex winches on the back of Big D to have an electric option along with the hydraulic winches already on it. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

Rorys a good one. He fabricated up something for me for free on a Sunday long before he was on TH-cam. Saved my trip. Thank you
I would have to agree with that statement. Extremely on a recent trip where ended up in Moab ended up with vehicle. problems. I called up Rory's number. Listen to the recording that said we no longer work on vehicles only do off road. Recoveries didn't leave a message. Because I didn't have an off road recovery and in not too terribly long. My phone starts raining and I look down and who's numbers on it.
Call just to make sure everything was good. Gave me some good advice very grateful.
I think part of what makes the photography great on this channel is that Mike is not originally from Moab so he still notices when the scenery is spectacular and shares it with us. Someone born and raised in southern Utah might not even notice the scenery because it's been that way his whole life and doesn't seem special.
Do you know where he is from?
@@jennifergonzales3164 Wisconsin, I believe.
Good point.
The humor between Shawn Mike and rory makes for a good show 😂😂😂
Mike’s humor always makes me laugh. “I’m gonna hide … behind these gas cans.”
UUID’s
"Even tho there is a shower of sparks 2 feet away, I'll be safe here".
The pause after "They were squirters" is classic.
Safety first!!
Yeah. Ever notice how many workshops seem to store their Oxy/Acetylene cylinders right next to the Bench Grinder?
Mike should know we appreciate the effort he puts into getting the video capture 👍.
Mike brings a certain "you can tell its an aspen because of the way it is" enegery to the show that i appreciate
Neat!
So Rory, as a life time Ford Truck Guy I am glad to see that you and Robby
both are warming up to your Ford Off Road Wreckers. I grew up in several
different Ford Trucks and they always performed their jobs. This is another
great Video. Mikes camera work is Spot On. Utah scenery is just as beautiful
when you are going backwards. I was surprised to see you pulling that
SUV sideways up grade by the aluminum wheels, I never thought about them
being that strong.. we learn a lot from everyone’s videos..
Keep up the good work guys, Stay Safe out there..

As a ford guy seeing big d out there working makes me happy, but definitely seems like it needs lots of love after a hard life, and maybe not the best maintenance
As another Food man I love seeing Big D out with Rory. I think he likes it enough to provide the car it needs from here forward, seeing how Big D has prover his value to the team.
I'm not really partial to any of the big three when it comes to classics. The first real job I worked with taxes deducted had an 89' F-350 with a 460 and no one wanted to drive it because it always broke down. They didn't know how to drive an old truck. I drove it as much as I could during the two summers I worked there and it never left me stranded once. Gem of an old truck, though it needed quite a bit of TLC to get it healthy again. Jim the old mechanic at the place kept getting on me about stealing his oil and tranny fluid to keep that old girl running.
Always admired someone willing & Able to repair vehicles on the Road or way off road and few do it as well as the Trail Mater crew
Wildlife sightings (deer tracks) and scenery observations by Mike along with some talented rear steer. Way to go.
LOL @ Mike finding a safe place to hide from the flying sparks, "Behind the Gasoline cans" at 18:34 , LOL 👍💣😁
Farmers, Fabricators, and Recovery Artists. Best things on youtube. Thanks for the fun and normal videos.
Nice to see Big D doing the job you got it for. The scenery never gets dull, forever changing with the seasons. Nice recoveries done again. Thanks for sharing.
One thing that's better about your trailer than Matt's is you actually have the ramps for yours
Thank you so much for sharing another great video of your outside office! Look forward to every video while I'm working in a foreign location. Looks like Big D is really helping out the team!
Me: "Why would someone want an 11000 lbs offroad truck?"
Later:*Rory lifts a full size buggy off the ground.
Me: "Oh......"
With all the new stuff…..it’s 12,000 lbs.
Another very scenic recovery you guys make it look so easy Thanks for the video guys
Think Mike has a need for a off-road one-wheel all the more cinematography excellence. Great recoveries. Winter time follies...Cheers 🍻
“Mike, how do you feel about being towed backwards, down a snowy road, providing some steering assist, and could you film at the same time please?”
I love Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturday just a little more than the rest, and may i say, you giys are the recovery guroos of all,
All hale Moab motor sports mayhem and trail mater.
Another fun video. I like the mods you've made to Big D. You realize that Wolf guy is gonna hafta paint it, right?
Never leave the key fob inside your truck when you are miles from civilization. My new Ford lockes the doors with the key fob inside!!!
Thanks guys for sharing, Kirk from Louisiana sending prayers and positive vibes to you and your families! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
(Best Christopher Walken Voice)
The truck looks good, but I could use a little more winches.
I'm tellin ya, fellas, your gonna want more cowbell...err winches on the truck.
GUYS! More winches!
What a great place the world would be if everyone loved and enjoyed their work this much!
Also, Amazon has motion activated magnetic mounting LED lights that are dirt cheap. They'd be great in the tool compartments that are totally not watertight.
Got love them modern day wheels definitely makes for a better winch point than those old steel wheels. It’s the most wonderful time for a beer!🍻
The rigs looking good with all the new improvements what a workhorse and you have heat!
Nice save catching that Furd from rolling off of the wheel lift I know she was tied off but it looked like a sketchy situation. You boys are definitely staying busy up there. Thanks for sharing some amazing videos and some beautiful country sides and you didn’t pull a MORR by running out of fuel. ⛽️
There is something wrong with the wheel lifts. Any other wheel lifts I’ve seen are level, not pointed down. I wasn’t surprised when the wheels started to fall off them.😊
He purposely cut and angled the head a couple of episodes ago so it would work better on rougher off road trails.
ABS will kill you on ice. 1. you brake, 2. tires slide, 3. ABS releases brakes, 4. grit in front of tire gets rolled over, wash rinse repeat. Just release brakes and steer!
I was under the impression that I needed $30,000 worth of military axles and tires to build an offroad wrecker
Looks like another mod will be required ro the wheel lift, like a "heel plate" to keep the vehicle from rolling off the chocks and reduce the strain on the straps holdint the tires firm to the lift. something like \______. That will also help when off road tows. Just a thought for you. Loved looking at the beauty of the snow.
I saw that right away as well. That cradle was hanging pretty bad
Wow, you have a Hickey sidewinder winch on Big D. Yep slow but strong. Perfect winch to put in the bed for side pulls. Just change the side the cable is coming out. One winch for both sides. Mounted properly you can pull forward and back. Some may remember the ad from the 70s of the Blazer hanging in the tree by the winch. That was a hickey winch.
Big D is earning it's keep. Love the upgrades.
Your channel is one of the few I still watch consistently. I've been trying to 'speak with my wallet' by limiting my overall views ever since TH-cam started pounding viewers over the head with ads. Yet your channel still shines through. Keep it coming
This is an extra special rig equipped with every thing she needs and nothing she don't!
I have had Ford trucks, 67 - 95, that all had more fuel at E. The only time I had one that was empty on E, was a 78 that I replaced the tank on. I had 4 trucks at that time and a handy trick to remember the 78 was empty on E, after replacing the tank, was the second time my friend brought me gas, he told me there wasn't going to be a third time !
Such a beautiful scenery with the snow and all the gray hair on your chin Rory matches the scenery. Great towes
Looks beautiful with that white dusting.... 🙂 So now I know why Rory painted the green bands on Big D... so you don't loose it in the snow 😂🤣😂 Great to see the Big D outfitting too
🙂 Thanks for sharing...
I love that you guys are figuring out some of this as you go.
... and the tank always... every flipping time....runs dry about 15 miles from the nearest gas station. I finally got my son broken of driving on the bottom half of the tank. The last time I took him the empty gas can and told him to go get gas. I waited about 15 minutes and went down the road and picked him up; the point had been made. That was the last time he ran out of gas. Tough love, but it worked.
But it's really helpful that 460's are thirsty boogers. Best we had was 9.3mpg. But that's why they carry 2 tanks, I guess.
Rory, do you think you can write up a list of everything you carry on a recovery, then send it to Matt, Paul, and Robbie 😁😂
he tried that .. Matt lost interest at item 1 .. extra fuel .... lol
Cool seeing Big D getting used and upgraded. A Ford in the fleet!
Hey Brother get you some foam pipe wrap near the size of those chain holders and stuff a hunk into each chain slot will hold chain in place and is inexpensive to keep on the truck also good for protection from chafing.
I'm pretty sure FORD means "Finest On Recovery Duty". Update your records accordingly!
I had a big D of my own that I used as a plumbing truck I called her the mule. With the rack and the heavy duty 12' utility bed empty she weighed about 11,300 lbs. I'm not sure what she weighed loaded but she was a heavy big bottomed girl and I loved that truck.😁
That was awesome! 😅 22mins nah keep it going I could watch stuff like this all day
Mike I’ll just hide behind these GAS CANS TO HIDE FROM THE SPARKS 🧨 😂❤
You all make a great team! team work makes the dream work. 😀
I have never known any crew on Utube or in person that have as much fun while working as your team
I wonder how much the front weighed when you had the buggy hanging off the back? I am picturing a tight angle video of mike lifting the front off the ground. Now that would have made a great click bait thumbnail!
The part about the rc charger at the end was hilarious. As a fellow manchild, I'd love to see some rc content
Great recoveries! Upgrades on the offroad recovery wrecker, good job! Thank you for sharing! 👌
You guys are really good learners. I would hire you to learn on the job getting me out of a pinch😅 I think it's better than learning how to make a situation worse, on my own 😔
The Ford is turning out to be quite the off-road Wrecker. When you go back to the Sand Hill to try it out. LOL. I was just kidding
Another great video ❤ Beautiful place to work everyday!
Hey Mike- get yourself an electric big-wheel longboard so you can follow along without having to jog all the time. Make sure it is green though.
Don't forget to a First Aid Kit in Big D for Mike.
By the time you finish big D, it’ll be 20k and you’ll be close to 4 mpg.
LOL 18:30. "Sparks! I'm gonna hide over here behind the gas cans"!
😂
Rory: "Sparks!"
Mike: "I'm gonna hide over here, behind these gas cans"
That belongs on a T-shirt.
Rory always improving his rigs
Rory I like the improvements to Big D. You have your own way of doing things and I know when the big wrench comes out that means that the easy way isn't working so you are getting serious.
A rolling tire is useful, a locked on is not. I even pop my transmission into neutral anytime I need to recover in a slide in the snow.
It ain't a man's truck till he gits his stuff in there. And Rory has his stuffed.
Thanks Mike for all the cool shots,
Big D's earning her keep really quick! Excellent additions you have made. Very impressed that she can lift the buggy off the ground and not pick the front end off the ground. In a pinch if needs be, could always lower the rear carrier to the ground to provide stablizing effect if lifting something alot heavier! Awesome recoveries as always and thank you so much for sharing
Ford aren't that bad so long as you don't get the 3.5, 5.4, 6.0, 6.4, 6.7... other than that they're great
Very interesting 🤔 guys 😉. Thanks 👍 for sharing.
You dudes crack me up. Love the rear view shots.
For such a turd of a truck it seems to be doing great except for operator error. 😆😅🤣😂
CONGRATS ON ANOTHER TRUCK IN THE FLEET! ... Good job boys !
I had a 72 Dodge RV with a 440, a 1999 RV with a Triton V-10, a 85 car hauler with a 454, A 78 Ford E250 with a 460, and now, a 99 Chevy Crew cab, with a 454,always, all of them were pulling my Rock Crawler and heavy ass 22' trailer, loaded with parts and tools, winch, fuel cell, generator, Battery for the winch and my 6K plus crawler, and they all got between 6 and 7 MPGs.
you wanta get a good 7.3 tdi. 26 lt 100 all day.. & torque to sell.. ive never had one, not a fan of any, lectric stuff. computers ect.. i have a s/duty,01, 4.2tdi, 700nm. 250 hp. 14 lt 100.. german diesel, not sold in u.s. just everywhere else..built in brazil..no computer.. nothing, no glow plugs.. 3 valve, ohc, 3'' syst, all mechanical..zf 5 sp..
Oh, you Ford haters. Sigh.
I *could* gripe about your crappy Dodges all day (because who wants to drive something that sounds like a 1959 Mack truck that’s ready to die)😂😂😘 but you love ‘em and that’s all that counts. 💁🏻♀️😀
My former BIL was the head of a college Automotive service management program many years ago and people would always ask him “which automobile brand was “really the best” - like he knew all the secrets of all the companies and there was one that was “perfect”. He would ask them a few questions and then tell them whichever brand they seemed to already think was best. Because they *all* have pretty good products or they wouldn’t keep selling stuff.
Ok. Pointless rambling over. Carry on. 😉😁
Gotta change the name now! That's one satisfying Ford! Aint no disappointment now
Your destination is on your left, nearly killed me. Lmao!
And it will always be 6.5 mpg loaded or unloaded 6.5
Rory nailed it those sidewinders were always slower than death much like my dad's old bronze Ramsay winch
Mike says "I'm gonna hide over here behind theses gas cans" literally made me laugh out loud.
Mike going "off script" at 12:40 cracked me up. 😂
MY 2002 F250 Super Duty w/V10 went 260,000 miles wi just 10 replacement coils, 10 replacement spark plugs, 1 alternator replacement, 1 starter replacement, 1 heater hose replaced, 2 fuel pumps replaced, 2 brake lines replaced, 1 brake caliper replaced, 2 front rotors replaced, besides bulbs, routine maintenance and brake pads, tires etc. It was rust that did her in after 16 Pennsylvania winters where we attempt to annihilate every snow flake that hits our roads.
My personal favorite Ford acronym is Fu@# Our Ride Died. Probably close to what the person driving that F250 in Beef Basin said when it started puking fuel.
I think for the Off Road Games there should be something where Rory and Matt cooperating to get something done with Shawn Mike TomTom and Jefe throwing out commentary/insults/advice from the balcony like Statler and Waldorf then round two the roles are reversed! Picking up that Expedition like it was an Escort was pretty impressive. Thanks for all the scenery shots on top of doing the actual towing job Mike its nice to get out virtually without having to put on boots and mitts
Big "D" puttin the work!! Great video and upgrades.
Glad your liking the PTO setup guys👍🏻. We only use PTO hydraulic as it gives way more control and power. The Winch setup looks great too.
9:00 with that fuel mileage maybe BIG D should be DEISEL
I have pretty much the same truck with a powerstroke. It is a fantastic engine. It gets ridiculous good mileage. With a camper in the bed towing my heavy steal horse trailer I still get 16mpg.
did ya disconect the battery.. mike shouldnt stik his head in the box like that.. i was in prison.. you know.. .. its an ongoing effort, to get rigs set up proper. i have 3 sets of tools, in shed, truck, truck, so i dont walk around for 1/2 hr trying to find sht..yrs ago, back in 83, mate drove on side of culvert, sliped half way down, only way out was a side winch, now, i have hitches front, back, sides.. winch in cradle.. just because the vehicle has awd, or a 4x4 stiker,,dont mean,,its a 4x4.. ausie..
Pipe wrenches fix things nearly as well as giant hammers. Keep it up guys
Keep seeing amain hobby hat. When we going to see Trail Matter RC truck? Even some RC bashing I’m sure Mike is a pro.
This is way you have winter tires, not that shity M/S tires. NOKIAN C3 or Nokian Hakkapelita
Moab in technicolor! Makes me glad we don't live in a black and white world. Big D, heavy duty for the touch ones.
I like hearing the odd curse word slip out, I trust you more. I wanna hear Mike say “Giggedty Giggedty”, he would be a great actor to play Quagmire.
Did you get a new camera? Clear video.
OMG a sidewinder winch- i remember back in my day when we got our off road magazines in the mailbox, they always had an ad of a blazer hanging from a tree limb off the ground on the end of a sidewinder. Awesome winches! Thanks for taking us along
Mike you probably shouldn't push your luck hiding behind gas cans, just saying 🤨🤣
15:11 I had an older Ford truck and when the gauge was on "E" you were out, no mercy, no reserve, no light. I only let it get to "E" once. Saving grace was I was working on a construction site and only had to walk a little ways to find a fuel jug then return it full.
Both jobs were ideal for the Ford. Looks like you might have found a place for the new truck.
I have never been a fan of mud, but I sure miss some snow in the winter. Never got a lot of snow when I lived in Page AZ, but it was never far away. Scenery where you are is spectacular !
That’s the sketchiest wheel lift I’ve ever seen.
Dammit man, I just love the Trailmater Team!!!! You guys work ( and play ) so hard and do such great work - and, best of all, have great attitudes while doing it. Good on you guys.
I am a truck driver coming through Moab. Is there anywhere I can pull off and see Rory, Mike and Shawn and all the rigs
Google the shop.
Not on a Saturday... Lol. Rigs are at the shop, but we aren't.
Been lifting all of you up in prayer blessings to the LORD this morning: The Business, Your entire families, which Includes Mike and Shawn and their families.
