Because they are affordable, easy to maintain, portable, and manageable, oil pastels are perfect for artists of all ages and experience levels. They provide stunning effects, exquisite textures, subtle gradients, and brilliant saturated color because to their special structure and versatility. I appreciate your work with a quick, aggressive mindset, which is why I'm interested in your excellent, straightforward instructions.
I don't paint. I started my first paint with pastels using this video... It really helps to understand the layering & blending & how each color shows up! First attempt turned out pretty good. Thanks to you!!
I had a hard time with this one because there were so many edits that jumped ahead in the drawing. I would’ve preferred more of a time lapse to be able to see the full process. Mine came out pretty well tho! Thanks for the content :)
Thank you for this tutorial.I've been using acrylics for years but was given oils and oil pastels and have no idea how to use the pastels. Now I have an idea of how to use them!!!Love your apple btw!!!
Just followed your video. The quality is nowhere as good but for a first effort with pastels and art in about 10 years; I'm really chuffed with it. Awesome video and tutelage!
Hello Matt, Thanks a lot for this lesson. I was scared while attempting this as this was my first time with oil pastels. What started to look like a tomato, finally ended up looking like Apple and just followed your instructions. Pretty cool! Thanks again! Will try out your other form of drawings too.
And after trying and trying... I made it! You explain everything so good!! But I must tell everybody something: to achieve a good result you need a good set of oil pastel at least like Sakura Craypas Junior (I paid 10€ for a 25 set).
Am in art college I was thinking that is very easy ..but I did it very bad .... I need to practice ... Work hard ...this video not only give me a lesson but also help me ...a lot ... That ..I am no were .. need to work hard ..for ke need to work even more harder 🙏🙏✨💓
Wow, very interesting. I received an art kit which included "oil pastels". However, I think mine are probably cheaper quality because they look more like crayon than oil paint when I apply them. Still, this gives me an idea of how to use them properly. I don't have as many colors or the colorless blender.
can you do a video on all the things u use like the oil pastels, the colored pencils, and water colors? also where you can get them and the prices ranges? please!!! it would be so helpful!!!!!!
I did this on a Canson Watercolor paper using cheap oil pastels. The first few layers started okay, but as I go along I realized the paper isn't holding the additional colors anymore. Is this because of the paper or the medium?
I'm not that much to the oil pastel, couse im a painter, and i never use oil pastel, but how do you guys blend it for the color shadings and color changings??
Gypsy SnickerDoodle The best way is to layer a complementary color of oil pastel. since oil pastels never dry completely, you cant use paint over it or it will crack. you cant mix oil and soft pastels because you will create a muddy unstable surface (they are very different mediums)
mackybarr I wish to gawd that random people who don't understand the original question would just move along without pretending they are experts. NOTE: Professional artists use oils & oil pastels all the time. Dry pastels can be used with oil, with varying effects. Oil pastels can be used over acrylics. Just move along
Gypsy SnickerDoodle Wow, you are rude. I was just trying to help you with the information my professor gave me. Just tell me I'm wrong, dont need to be rude and belittle me
This is great thank you so much. I want to do portrait with oil pastel....how forgiving is it for example if I realize that I misplaced a feature.....or do I go over with the oil pastel only once I have an accurate sketch?! Thanks much
recently at the high school I'm at, we got an art kit which we payed £10.00 for, here's what we got, Water colour paints (12 colors) Water colour pencils (12) Oil pastels (12) an awesome sketchpad, (30 thick pages and a very thick piece of paper at the back to support it) pencil eraser sharpener paint brush (2) that is a lot.
Great tutorial, don't take the negative idiots seriously. I seem to keep getting the tooth of the paper showing through, and if I press harder, clumps of oil pastel keep coming off, almost impossible to blend or remove. Do you think I just bought too (admittedly) cheap pastels, or is my paper too toothy?
Great tutorial!!!!! Thanks for demonstrating ! But how did you make sure that the pastel tip is thin so you could draw very thin lines ? My pastels have such blunt heads 🌝
It’s hard to tell, but are you using light short sketchy strokes, or hard short pressing dotting motions? I guess I’m asking about pressure and direction… I get the whole painting aspect of it, but I am mostly a watercolor artist and I have trouble with building layers and mediums such as oil and colored pencils… I love the look of oil pastels and really want to learn how to use them!

what can I do to substitute the colorless blender?
+hotbetty200 Tortillon, blending stump, rolled up paper towel, etc.
+hotbetty200 I use a white wax candle
The simplest you can get is a paper towel.
most people just use cotton or paper towel or there finger
I never find anyone to agree with me but latex gloves aren't bad
This is great I am an oil painter and will be trying pastels!

Is there a way to make the edges sharper? Or is that counterproductive to the nature of oil pastels?
I've seen people use pencils to straighten lines in pastel paintings, but I like the roughness

My pastel's kinda low quality, hard to blend. Can't put white on black.
Why my white pastel is not so white?
Maybe because it isn't soft enough. I know exactly, that the Sennelier white pastel overlay ALL colores.
Kraft paper?
Wonderfull art👏👏

I can't seem to layer white on the red no matter what I do...
