Nice looking tree and my only query is how safe is that cut going to be with reference to the main upward shoot? I am always interested to know just how close you can come on different species. Cheers Sam

Cheers Xav, I understand your concerns but I have no doubt this strong Hawthorn can handle the work that leaders pulling sap! I’ve had die back around cuts on hornbeam and elms but rarely my choosen bud or leader.

Nice tree. Would an angled cut have been possible, helping the taper in time?

Thanks David, I don’t feel I could have cut this one at much more of angle. I liked the look of the tree with branch arrangement. Also I’ve got 4-5 hawthorns with the standard 45 degree cuts for clean taper I thought be good to try something else and see results. This tree could be chop a little lower if it doesn’t work out 🌱

Very nice tree in the making 😊 i have a collected Hawthorn, trunk about 3-4 inches wide (nebari about 10-12 inches). What's your experience air layering Hawthorn? I cut it far too high when i collected it, 1 metre+. It either slowly becomes a very tall elegant tree, or i air layer for two powerful thick trunk trees....

Thank you, your collected tree sounds great! Hawthorn seems to layer okay! I’ve got a load of pink hawthorn layers I’m waiting on they didn’t quite make it last season partly my neglect. There out in the middle of nowhere the summer was baking and the animals were intrigued! I uploaded a short the other day have a nosey 😊
