Collecting Yamadori Hawthorn For Bonsai

  • In this video I return to The Hill, my favourite place for collecting old yamadori Crataegus monogyna/Common Hawthorn.
    With the help of cameraman Paul Ladbrooke, I show more of the conditions on the Hill as we travel up on our collecting trip.
    The video then shows the tools I use for collecting, and most importantly, the best methods for collecting wild deciduous trees.
    Learning how to dig up a wild tree, ensures that you damage as little of the rootball as possible, and can collect quickly and cleanly.
    The hand-chainsaw that I use in the video for cutting thick roots, particularly those growing underneath the trunk, can be found from many sources online and are surprisingly cheap. Well worth investing in!
    PLEASE ALWAYS REMEMBER TO GET PERMISSION BEFORE COLLECTING WILD TREES. AND BE RESPONSIBLE.
    Do not try to take trees from the wild unless you have good knowledge of bonsai horticulture, are using modern inorganic soils and know exactly what you are doing. Getting these trees to survive is not easy and removal from their natural environment is irresponsible if you are not able to revive them successfully.

    Looks like a good workout. That hand chain saw makes light work of that root. When all this covid stuff is over I'm going to go and have a hunt around my boss' small holding for yamadori.

    How long do you keep the tree bagged up in the black bin liner? I've got one I collected a few weeks back which has sprouted a few shoots and more buds swelling on the bark. Checked today and it's really damp inside so going as planned. Unsure if I should be airing it at all to remove stale air, or whether to replace with a white bin bag to allow a little more light in now?
    Any advice appreciated!

    • @bonsai4me2
      @bonsai4me2  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      TheCattwooduk keep it in there, even after leaves emerge and shoots start to extend. It will keep the humidity up when we get the first really warm temps in May.
      Just slowly tear open the bag over several weeks, if the leaves don’t start to brown off you can keep owning the ho bigger. I wouldn’t take it off completely until after midsummer to be certain.

      May I ask what power the thermal cables you use are? I only got 20W cables and they're just about keeping soul temp between 8-13C. May get some more beefy ones next year.

    If collecting hawthorn in the late autumn & winter months,would you still put the tree in a plastic bag and use the heat cables in the poly tunnel?
    Love watching your videos by the way.

    I’m looking at getting into collecting. I’m wondering how people get the permission. I know some land/ farm owners are very nice people that don’t mind. I have so many fields with hawthorn, blackthorn, oaks and every year the farmers cut them down or back. I just don’t know how to ask

      Yingfu Zuo I guess mainly because of the weight and the relatively short time the battery would last. This dig took 90 mins, on average a tree takes around an hour

    Hey im a new subscriber and i want to collect a hawthorn as well but im bot sure on what to plant it in can you give tips? The piece is absolutely stunning and it will be my first collection. Its about a meter tall and the trunk is as thick as yours or bigger.

      I collected a hawthorn about three weeks ago and potted it to the mixture of akadama, potting gravel and compost 1/1/1. Last week a lot new buds started appearing so looks it will be growing well. It was my first collection as well.

    • @bonsai4me2
      @bonsai4me2  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don’t use old skool organic soil components. You need plenty of drainage and aeration in the soil. I’ve seen trees ‘successfully’ revived in what amounts to mud (compost)....but they will be weaker and you’re greatly increasing the risk of failure.
