  • This is the second track from Deep Purple's debut album, Shades of Deep Purple (1968).
Lineup (Mk I) - Rod Evans: lead vocals, Ritchie Blackmore: guitar, Nick Simper: bass guitar and backing vocals, Jon Lord: organ, keyboards, backing vocals, Ian Paice: drums
    Lyrics:
I got a certain little girl she's on my mind
No doubt about it she looks so fine
She's the best girl that I ever had
Sometimes she's gonna make me feel so bad
    Hush, hush
I thought I heard her calling my name now
    Hush, hush
She broke my heart but I love her just the same now
    Hush, hush
Thought I heard her calling my name now
    Hush, hush
I need her loving and I'm not to blame now
    (Love, love)
They got it early in the morning
    (Love, love)
They got it late in the evening
    (Love, love)
Well, I want that, need it
    (Love, love)
Oh, I gotta gotta have it
    She's got loving like quicksand
Only took one touch of her hand
To blow my mind and I'm in so deep
    That I can't eat and I can't sleep
    Listen
    Hush, hush
Thought I heard her calling my name now
    Hush, hush
She broke my heart but I love her just the same now
    Hush, hush
Thought I heard her calling my name now
    Hush, hush
I need her loving and I'm not to blame now
    (Love, love)
They got it early in the morning
    (Love, love)
They got it late in the evening
    (Love, love)
Well, I want that, need it
    (Love, love)
Oh, I gotta gotta have it

One of the countless songs that I inexorably link to childhood memories with my Dad, THE greatest father a kid could ask for. He's 83 and when I stream this through his BOOM, he jumps off the couch and starts playing his air guitar.
So Dad, this one goes out to you! From your "little knuckleheads", Theresa, Timmy, Eric, Donovan, Brady, Scotty and Nick.

Awesome Dad bro!! I was nit yet 13 when i bought this album. Glad Rod Evans left Purple and ended up.with Rhino, Lee Dorman, and Bobby Caldwell to form Captain Beyond in 1970 and reakesed their first in January 1972. I used to get to travel with ny Dad to England and Europe from 67 to 73 when he was doing DOD/Nato functions and many times i had a couple days to myself and it was all Rock n Roll for me. I seen both versions of DP(Evans the Gillan) in venues in and around the club circuts. My childhood Rocked!!

***** Justin Bieber is just the modern day equivalent of a 70s Johnny Bravo. Remember the Brady Bunch episode featuring a young Greg Brady cast into the role of a Rock superstar, named Johnny Bravo. Fame, Fortune, even Girls were his to be had, but in the end Johnny came around to common sense reasoning, thanks, in part to his family. I don't know what kind of support system is in place for Justin, Miley, or the Jonas Brothers, but in the end, if it is to be then it will be. So let the kid enjoy his 15 minutes or 5 years, perhaps.

I'm so surprised this song is as underrated as it is. I tried listening to other Deep Purple songs, and nothing has beat this yet. Sure it doesn't have a catchy riff, but it doesn't matter. Every single other detail is perfect.

A few things stand out here: 1. How HEAVY this song was for '68, an era where heaviness was a rarity outside of Cream or Jimi; 2. How cool this song still sounds; I'd still rank it in the Top 10 of DP's catalog; 3. How underrated RE was as a vocalist, leading me to believe the issues leading to his replacement by IG were more personal than professional.

Ronnie Bishop Not sure why "rate (ing) people from that era" should be especially hard. I mean, The Beatles hail from that era (meaning the 60s?)---and remain the yardstick every other band is compared to.

    • @SAHogan-bw4wg

Ronnie Bishop People tend to glorify the 60s when there really weren't that many great bands. After The Beatles, The Stones, and Cream, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, and The Beach Boys the list gets pretty thin. Even great bands that got started in the 60s---like Purple, Floyd, Chicago, and The Who---didn't enjoy their heyday until the 70s, THE greatest period for rock. Agree with you that few bands stand out today, NIN and Coldplay being the only two that come to mind.
