    I love when Ryan addresses why his tank crashed. We don't do that enough in this hobby and its the most important information we can share. It also makes the hobby less intimidating, sometimes I swear I'm the only one making mistakes.

    Ryan, thank you for your channel and sharing of your reefing journey! My 60-gallon cube is now three years old. Launched it in summer 2021. Learned as much as I could from BRS and many other reefing channels then hand-built the mixed-reef using pre-owned pieces (acrylic sump/glass aquarium) and new equipment. 1st year hard as f**k! 2nd year on, smooth sailing. Kessil 360 + Reefbrite 12” blades, mangroves growing out the top with Kessil 160, Fiji cube 800 external overflow (I drilled tank), PVC plumbing form BRS (gate valve, check valves, angle valve, tubing/elbows). Sump has skimmer, 7” media basket rather than sock, and custom chaeto refugium section built with Amazon acrylic sheets and acrylic cement. Neptune refugium GROW light. Octo 400 return pump with float safety valve. Optical freshwater refill system for evaporation w/5-gallon reservoir. In-line UV sterilizer and ROWA-phos in external reactor. Water source is BRS RODI. Tons of coral (branching acros, montipora, SPS, hammers, digi, Hawkins, plating acros, frogspawn, leathers). My tank looks like the over-grown example shown In this video (edge-to-edge coral) with a giant 13” wide monti nearly growing out the top (started as 1.5” frag). I consider myself a 4-star reefer, no less than high 3-star (have paid my dues in research 100’s of hrs). Fish/invertibrates: large clown pair since beginning, small hippo tang, many gobies, six-line, fire shrimp, pink 4” starfish, Chromis, Scott’s damsel pair, snails, hermit crabs. All-For-Reef solution on dosing pump keeps elements and minerals in check. Water changes are nearly zero. Began weekly WH, then bi-weekly, eventually monthly, ended in 3-4 per year. Now maybe two 8% water changes per year, if that. Have all the Hanna checkers. Nitrate and phosphate low. Phosphate has tendency to elevate. Nitrate stays low. Never done an ICP test, could and should do that to test my maintenance strategy. I’m positive some or many elements could be out of whack. No ill effects (marine life adjusts?). Coral death? Some, mostly from shading (coral growth). Fish death? Yes, many over the years. Starvation (2x Copperband), and unknown diseases. Never had ich (UV). My dream tank is 150 gallon. That’s next after we buy a house (living in California, expensive). People LOVE our tank! I credit BRS, Reef Builders, Reef Bum, Coral Euphoria, and many others!! Success is based on listening to the experts and taking action! Trial and error! Does perfection exist? Nah, chasing numbers! Con in my tank? Aiptasia!! Have tried everything!! Red Sea Aiptasia X, file fish, and $200 worth of nudibranchs! The nudis disappeared (been 8 months), probably eaten by little gray/white uneven starfish (pest?) and fireworms (PLENTY!). I’ll do my best to prevent Aiptasia in the new build. 😃👍🏼

    I farm. Livestock. If I bring in a new animal I isolate it in quarantine for 30 days down wind, down hill, down stream, down chores. Double deworm and vaccinate. Then two weeks across a fence line. Then open into a common area with the herd it is joining while heavy feeding with the ability to retreat. This always works. Same thing with reef corals and fish. A lot of the principles we use farming apply to aquariums.

  • @pubwvj
    @pubwvj 14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    In addition to reefing I farm and raise livestock. You are completely right that we do not have to be precise or accurate. Approximately is fine enough. Same as with our personal diet. Eat a varied diet. Feed our fish a varied diet. It feeds our corals a varied diet. Export handles the error.

    That success and failure stat hits hard... I'm about a year into my tank and have thought recently about selling and getting out before I have any more losses. Your videos have been a great source of info, and the only reason I've made it this far and haven't quit yet. Thank you!

      If there is one take away from this video it is this " do your 10% weekly water changes, just do it." There are total different success rates associated with this who do this.

    I've been reefing for 3.5 years. Around the 1 year mark I stopped doing water changes as long as my nitrates and alkalinity were in a decent range. The tank slowly withered away. Started doing weekly - biweekly water changes for the past 5 months and my tank has no nasties or algae and the corals are growing like crazy.

    • @SeriousReefs
      @SeriousReefs 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Imagine would it would have been like whiteout the box. Fish are like people, they have personalities and some are mean bully's. One of the things Elliot taught me was to recognize the signs between chasing which is just showing who is the boss and actual aggression which can harm the fish. If you watch closely is easy to see the difference.

  • @christopherbartak7831
    @christopherbartak7831 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm new to reefing and confused by the dosing information. What is meant by a complete 1-7 part with minor and trace? Are calcium/alkalinity/magnesium covered if you use one of the mentioned products, say, Triton Core 7, or do you have to dose cal/alk/mag separately? What other elements are included in 1-7 part w/ trace? In looking up a couple of the mentioned products, they mention calcium and alkalinity, but nothing really else so I'm not sure how they are any better than just dosing calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium, the two-star method mentioned. Then, he's talking about 1-7 part, but then mentions 2 part a couple times, and when I go to look up Core 7, it looks like there are four parts. So, I'm thoroughly confused.

    • @SeriousReefs
      @SeriousReefs 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      calcium and alkalinity supplements are commonly called "2 part" as generic term that covers most of them. However some are true 2 parts with trace elements mixed into the two jugs. Others have the trace elements in separate bottles which ends up making them more than two parts. A good option for newer reefers is a a true two part like reef code from brightwell. The dry version where you add your own water is really affordable as well.
