  • In this Tidal Gardens Podcast episode, we talk with Elliot Lim from Marine Collectors to talk about their methods of bringing in fish and getting them through quarantine treatments safely and effectively. I am learning a great deal about fish quarantine in these discussions with Elliot. Hearing about what they do at Marine Collectors is very impressive. I am still trying to piece together a quarantine system and methodology that works best for us, but closer every day!

How many of you quarantine your fish?

I quarantine fish, coral, and inverts. I have even called companies to ensure any bacteria additives or those coraline in a bottle supplements are not taken from tanks with fish.

Never quarantined a fish. Almost all my tangs have had black flukes but that just comes down to fish health. Feed your fish a great food and provide it with the perfect environment to thrive and it’ll have the best chance to fight off any disease on its own. Survival of the fittest.

Always !! Lost whole stock before and never want to feel that hurt again😢
Everything was going so well , til the impulse addition happened , than all was lost! Within 2 days , probably velvet from my guess.

Never quarantined then a gem tang came with ich and velvet and wiped half the tank before I got a quarantine system up and running from an old tank with copper. Now i quarantine all fish with copper for 30 days

None for me. I got ich but everyone is fine! I fed them well and kept the water clean. My power is outage right now. I don't have battery backup either. I can't afford right now.

Elliot - it would be incredibly helpful to put up online your feeding protocols for fish. I think it could really be a gamechanger and it would save a lot of fish. For example, so many people can’t get copperband butterflies eating and I regularly hear people say it takes them 3 or 4 tries to get a copperband to survive in their tank. (This is even true for seasoned fish keepers like Sanjay and quarantiners on humble fish’s site).

We do have plans in the works to make species specific videos, and write ups, on every fish we’ve developed a protocol for in the future. It’s just about having the time to make the content. Hopefully we’ll be able to do this sooner rather than later!

So far I am 5 for 5 (2 tangs, 3 damsels) with Elliot’s protocol from the BRS videos.
    Love it
Will always do it if necessary.

Listening to Elliot is so heartwarming. Being in the retail side of this hobby made me incredibly cynical about how horrible it is for the animals. Seeing someone who actually cares gives me hope for the hobby long term.

After a bath in Safety Stop I quarantine for at least a month before moving them into the acclimation box where they'll stay for another week or so before I'll release them.

Would very much love to know Elliots tips and tricks to getting Regal Angels to eat. I would so very much love to have one in my reef, but getting them to eat is so heartbreaking!

After years in fresh water, keeping fish and plants together in the same aquarium is almost too challenging. Seems we sacrifice conditions for both when we bring them together. I had crazy success in my fresh system when I built a sump that incorporated terrestrial plants (not aquatic plants). A tank built for fish, the sump for terrestrial plants, same water circulating through both. The terrestrial plants grew like weeds. The fish are the healthiest I’ve ever seen.
I am seriously considering separating my marine fish from my display. Two separate aquariums, but tied together. Provide better habitat, in a fish only, very low intensity (inexpensive) to no lighting for fish, then a display that optimizes conditions for coral.

Starting a 300 gallon system with a QT from the beginning. I bring them home from the LFS and I finish the copper QT they start for a total of 4 weeks. Currently have some Kole tangs in QT and next is a group of convict tangs.

Found out a couple years ago that I can't smell formaldehyde, only figured out when my eyes were starting to burn and had breathing issues. Wasn't allowed to handle it after finding that out since I couldn't tell if there was an issue/leak/spill.

Hello Elliot! @marinecollectors if you don't recommend the use of formalin for home use. How would someone at home deal with Uronema, brook and flukes in a safe way?
