      Yeah, it's to keep prices down on the low end models. 10th gen are pricey, and Apple uses other pricey parts already, so it all adds up. (When you factor in the usual margins.)

    • @brucemckay6615
      @brucemckay6615 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hyperbole much? But more to the point - you ahve to consider design, engineering and supply chain issues in all of this... As some have said this is an interim upgrade ahead of a more full upgrade later in the year - thats the one you have a right to complain about if the FFC is still 720p

    • @m_schauk
      @m_schauk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, but I don't know of any manufactures that are any different. Dell's XPS 13 is 720p. I'm hoping the webcam changes when the display is upgraded to miniLED and 14in. Fingers crossed the Bloomberg report is correct that the model I want is coming in the Fall.

    I got a entry level 13 inch MacBook Pro last year right when it came out. Do you think this alone is worth the upgrade? There’s the 4 years of Apple warranty for the keyboard so I’m thinking i should hold out. I’m very delicate with my MacBook as well. Any thoughts?

    • @fabis.7153
      @fabis.7153 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can live with the key board stick with it. Its about your personal experience. There are quite a few people who are fine with the butterfly switches. And as you said you got the warranty of 4 years anyways. As the video explained. Powerwise there is no difference.

    With the updated keyboard & more base storage, should I go with the base MacBook Pro 13” or the i5 MacBook Air? I’m not a pro user yet, but my last computer was the 2015 12” MacBook so I plan to keep this purchase for 4-5 years.

  • @Archivist42
    @Archivist42 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It seems like an OK upgrade to me, there aren't any real thrills here but I appreciate Apple wanted to quickly establish keyboard parity across the entire MacBook range. Even though I don't mind the butterfly switch, what I've realised I don't like is moving between scissor and butterfly because my brain gets confused on how to press when typing quickly

    I bought the i5 MBA and have had it now for a few weeks. This replaced my aging 2011 MBP. All was well until last night when, during a FaceTime session that went on for about 20 min, the fan become very noticeable (I was warned about this). While my 14 day return policy expired the other day, Apple granted me an extension so I can compare the i5 MBA with the 10 gen MBP. So I'm wondering- is it worth the ~ $400 upgrade?
    My use is standard laptop work (including FT) but I also do some audio editing/analysis and music file conversion. The MBA did well for that. It was just FT. But now I'm a bit worried about the log term (I keep them for a while).
    BTW @Rene Ritchie - great videos. Yours was the one that helped me make sense out of all of the noise. Thanks!

    I want more info on TDP with the MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro. If the 2020 air is Y series chip and has a limited tdp such as 7 watts, and the pro has a U series chip with a 28 or 15w tdp then this is a huge differenc. Turbo Boost is awesome and sometimes in certain circumstances the Y and U series chips can trade blows but in other circumstances the U chip will be much faster and worth the 10% weight trade off.

    - 14” display
    - Higher res FaceTime camera (4K would be nice)

    Awesome video. When you compare this (the entry level MBP) to the MBA 2020, it would be great if you could address users who do ms office tasks and websurfacing while also video chatting on various platforms (FT, Zoom, Google). So not a video creator but someone who does some multitasking AND definitely does not want to hear the fans spin (because they drive me crazy). I would really appreciate hearing what you have to say. 1. MBA 13" - $999 (1 Fan + 1 Heatpipe) (Y Series Processors are good but need better cooling)
    2. MBP 14" - $1800 (2 Fans + 2 Heatpipes) (Pro users are willing to pay more)
    3. MBP 16" - $2200 (2 Fans + 4 Heatpipes) (Ultimate MBP with all features and performance)

    Hi Rene I need your help to make a decision.
    Or anybody else who can advise me.
    Currently I have a Surface book 2 2018.
    And I want to buy new computer.
    My last MacBook is from 2012, since that I bought 5 different laptops. Dell XPS, Alienware, Rog, Surface pro 4 and now surface book 2.
    All these computers I still have with me, are in very good conditions but all have something in common, battery almost dead.
    For the Alienware I already change battery 3 times. The surface book 2 is heating a lot and battery reduce 20% in 2 years.
    But my MacBook Air from 2012, still have 8 hours battery life. This machine still like new.
    So that's why I'm thinking in change my surface book 2 for a MacBook Pro 16. Because 3k USD is very expensive, I don't want to change laptop in at least 5 years.
    So what do you think I should do?
    1. Wait for surface book 3?
    2. Wait for Dell XPS 15" 2020?
    3. Buy the MacBook?
    4. Do you agree MacBook is more stable and better have longer life computers than PC?
    5. Or now with the new PCs all battery life is same?
    This for what I need my computer.
    Travel a lot.
    Long battery.
    Stable
    I use Photoshop, Illustrator, and watch a lot videos.
    I hope you can guide me to not spend my money wrongly.

    If they do the same as they did with the 15” to 16” and release a 14” only 5 months apart then this is clearly a business strategy designed to empty the parts bins before the actual upgrade.

    • @johnborges5938
      @johnborges5938 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      More likely the 14 just isn't ready and won't be for at least another few months. As the last Mac portable with the butterfly keyboard, and with constant rumors of replacement, they had to either replace the keyboard on the 13 or watch sales vanish. This was a reasonable stopgap under the circumstances: anyone with any experience knew the rumored 14-inch with mini-LED couldn't possibly release before fall at the earliest.

    • @PPYTAO
      @PPYTAO 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnborges5938 I respectfully disagree. As I specifically said that if the release window is the same as the 15" to 16", that's more than just a coincidence between model releases, it's a pattern. Don't make the mistake of thinking that a giant company like Apple do anything by chance.
      I also don't think it's a very reasonable excuse (or realistic expectation) that it's just not ready yet so they released a stop gap. They can't react to market rumours that quickly and just spit out an upgraded body, this had to have been in the pipeline for a while, so i think it's fair to say it was most likely planned. I do however agree that they just wanted to get something out the door with the upgraded keyboard so that sales would not only continue, but spike again before the real upgrade (I'd put money on statistical analysis showing their most significant sales periods coincide with new releases, so they want to maximise this effect). I also think that during these times sales are going to be significantly reduced regardless.
      I'm not saying it's unreasonable for a multi-billion dollar corporation to want to get rid of old parts that they have sitting around, of course not, the alternative would be to throw them all in the bin? (In an ideal world they'd recycle them for use in future products, but that has costs attached and they won't choose to lose profit intentionally, especially if they can MAKE profit as an alternative) If anything it makes sense to do step by step upgrades to the product rather than wait for 5-10 years of development and do them all at once. My problem with the practice is that it's not transparent. And in this case would be clearly different from yearly releases and consumers having unrealistic expectations of always having the best.
      They know that consumers would not buy this model if we knew a 14" upgraded version was coming in 5 months, and they know that if they weren't selling a lot of products in 2020 so far that they probably wouldn't be doing so before the potential release of a 14" model in 5 months time. Thus they have a window of projected low sales (Until the new release effect kicks in with the potential 14" model), and a surplus of parts to get rid of. So they intentionally release this one in the mean time to use all the spare parts and eek out revenue because it has the "new factor" (despite only being a small upgrade, if at all for base models).
      They do so knowing full well that consumers will be upset in the near future (rightly so in my opinion, as they're breaking from traditionally yearly or multi-yearly release cycles). Unfortunately (or fortunately as it may become easier to predict) this seems to be a permanent part of Apples product strategy now, release a very minor upgrade at the end of a product life cycle to get rid of as many components as possible, just a few months before releasing the ACTUAL upgraded product. The same thing happened to the 15" MBP, and most recently with the iPad pro.
      Given all of that, what do I think is the best solution? I don't know, i'm not an economist, a corporation, or a marketing guru. What I do know is that it feels manipulative and dishonest as a consumer and it would seem like the majority of people agree with me.

    • @johnborges5938
      @johnborges5938 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamielol - This new model uses the same body as before, unmodified. If the 14-inch display is really mini-LED as rumored, even Fall is a very aggressive release. And the butterfly keyboard fiasco makes plain that Apple doesn't plan everything they are eventually compelled to do. The keyboard replacement was forced on them by the market. The "business strategy" you allude to is, at best, their recently expressed commitment to do more regular and more frequent product updates for the Mac line. More frequent updates means less substantial changes in each one.
      You are obviously entitled to your opinion, but they have plenty of methods of "emptying the parts bin" without resorting to the expense of any redesign at all, and their supply system management methods don't allow for sizable parts bins to start with.

    • @PPYTAO
      @PPYTAO 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnborges5938 Fair points and thanks for a constructive response!
      Is the body of the computer actually the same? Are the butterfly and scissor switch keyboards are 100% transferrable within the chassis? I expected they wouldn't be (and thus would require different machining and therefore development for said machining) but I may be wrong there. Also the case is thicker to accomodate said keyboard so i expected that that alone is enough to say it's not the exact same case.
      Personally I would be surprised at this point if the potential 14" model is actually mini-LED. I don't think they would have set up a supply chain of multiple new sized screens (referring to the 16" and assuming the 14" would have been developed in parallel) with different technologies. I don't think we'll see mini-LED screens until the next major form factor redesign, whether it debuts in a MacBook, iMac or iPad remains to be seen but i think it will spread across the product range once it has been introduced.
      Using the butterfly keyboard fiasco as proof that Apple doesn't plan everything they do, and therefor seemingly implying that my point of long term product planning is moot is lazy and simply not logical. Whilst they may not have planned to re-introduce a scissor switch keyboard at the outset of the butterfly keyboard, it has been an ongoing issue for years and they have had plenty of time to react and change trajectory, as proven by how long it has taken them to do so. I feel this only supports my argument really as it proves that even when faced with problems that they want to take action against, they can't do it overnight as a result of customer dissatisfaction, let alone rumours. So it may have been forced on them by the market, but it was not a knee jerk response as a stop gap. I think it's more reasonable that they developed the new keyboard for the 14" update and realised they could just whack that bottom half onto the old top half and make some extra sales.
      Now that you point it out it does seem reasonable that they wouldn't have a large surplus of components, which if anything indicates why this product will only have a 5 month life span (again, this is all assuming there actually is a 14" model in the near future).

    • @johnborges5938
      @johnborges5938 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamielol - Some interesting points. The chassis has only minor changes, as attested by the fact that only the assembly thickness has changed by 0.2mm and the internal design is identical. I'm sure there is some minor retooling to accommodate the new keyboard and likely a hinge redesign. The base shell (as opposed to the lid) may or may not be thicker, but in any case it is clearly a minor change in the tooling.
      I agree with your comment about the mini-LED display to the extent that, if it is NOT mini-LED, the present release is very odd and would suggest that it is some intentional corporate strategy - though I don't believe it is one to liquidate part stocks. However, the more reliable rumor reports regarding the 14 have all consistently claimed mini-LED. One can never be sure, but I would expect the 14 rumor is regarding a 2021 product. The 16-inch release does make the whole thing a bit odd, but with regard to displays there may be other constraints that determine rollout order. IIRC when Apple went to LED backlights the changes were product by product and not uniform and across all lines. I would not be at all surprised, however, if the current 16 could not accept a mini-LED display without a major redesign. That might portend that the lineup will not be getting major redesigns for a few years (after the release of the 14, that is).
      As to Apple's planning everything, my point was simply that they clearly don't. I don't believe that the current releases of the Air and Pro 13 took 2 years of planning once it became clear there was a problem with the butterfly keyboard. Instead I think Apple attempted 2 separate fixes to the keyboard design to avoid exactly these bigger redesigns, thinking their intended product cycle could be salvaged. And exactly because it became clear by 2019 that the butterfly keyboard was poisoned by its reputation and was unsalvageable, they were forced to create these intermediate redesigns before their probable intended mini-LED redesigns no doubt intended for next year. Apple is a big company and can be slow moving, but when catastrophe looms, they can change direction, eventually, after all else fails. Any long-timer observer sees this as one of the company's defining characteristics.
      Thanks for a spirited discussion, take care.

    If there is a 14" redesign coming late this year or early next, this really is the kind of minimal update they would have to do. My guess is that, if not for the keyboard issue, they would have simply waited for the coming rework to release all of these improvements. I personally am ok with it. Before it was really hard to get my head around spending $2000+ on the config I require, and with a crap shoot on the keyboard. Now I can get what I need for $1800, with a better processor and graphics and a reliable keyboard. Still painfully expensive, but much better.

    Ironically, I think the non-redesign is a good thing while the 16” redesign might be a bad thing. We have rumors that ARM will be used next year on smaller MBP’s, so perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised this release was nothing more than a spec bump plus keyboard upgrade. Apple doesn’t like redesigns just for one year because it’s too expensive, R&D-wise, which may mean the 13” MBP may be replaced next year with ARM and a complete redesign. So why’s the 16” not a good thing? It means it probably won’t go ARM because of the redesign. They slightly changed it to last a couple of years at least until they are confident about going full ARM with the lineup.
    The current 13” doesn’t have a better webcam because a bigger one won’t fit in that slim top case, and it probably doesn’t have WiFi 6 because it probably needed an antenna redesign, which Apple wasn’t willing to do, so while the chipset supports it, the software probably doesn’t.

    Apple just gave me something else to think about when getting my daughter her next MacBook as she starts college as a freshman this Fall. Since she’s a light user, and coming from an 2014 Air, I was thinking 2020 Air, with some bump in specs to make it more “future proof” (i5 and 16GB RAM). Now with the base 2020 Pro with an i5 and 16GB of RAM, it’s roughy about $100 more. The Pro is going to be heavier and as I said, she’s not using it for graphic intensive applications. Still, tempting to get the Pro because it’s a Pro, but I may still stick with the Air. Any thoughts appreciated! And thanks for the great video - I just found your channel and am a new subscriber.

    • @johnborges5938

      Mort Shuman - the thermals are better on the Pro, which is a plus for longevity in my book. The Pro also has substantially better multicore performance which would likely be utterly wasted, but it is there in the event of unanticipated needs. My feeling is that the Pro will be likely to handle anything you can throw at it for 4 years; the Air will likely be fine but has a slightly higher likelihood of needing replacement because it is not up to the required tasks. For $200 or more I would probably take my chances on the Air, but unless weight is a serious problem, for only $100 I would get her the Pro and consider it cheap insurance.

    • @mdduckman

      John Borges Isn’t the 10th Gen i5 Quad Core in the Air better than the 8th Gen i5 in the entry level 2020 Pro??

    • @johnborges5938
      @johnborges5938 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mort Shuman - I believe it is from a lower power family, but it is a newer chip. It scores about 10% faster single core than the older one in the Pro, but the Pro outperforms it in multicore significantly. By itself that would point to the Air as the first choice for simpler workloads. But the thermals for the Air mean that under sustained heavy workload it will throttle before the Pro. That doesn't make the Air a bad machine, but to my mind it makes the Pro a better choice for lengthy ownership as an insurance policy against a wider variety of use scenarios. At only a $100 dollar difference, I also think you would be able to more than compensate for the cost differential on resale after 2 to 4 years.
      I will say, though, that it's entirely down to personal preferences and concerns. I could see a very solid case for the Air, say, based on the fact that it is lighter and easier to carry around. That advantage alone might be worth an *extra* hundred bucks for some people. In the end you might consider taking your daughter to an Apple store and noting if she has a strong preference for one form or the other. Best of luck in either case!
