The stylus epic has a sharp lens, but for around $250, is it worth it? Thanks for stopping by everyone, hope you enjoyed this weeks video! Also GIVEAWAY has now ENDED! Winners will be chosen this week! Turn on those push notifications to be the first ones to find out 🤫😏 #MinoltaGang
KingJvpes I like the images from the mju 1 one more & I've noticed that they have been going up in price. Though the mju 1 has focus issues it has a much more contrasty & punchier lens with slightly more pop. The mju 2 is sharper, better in low light & less contrasty bc of the more lens elements in it.
KingJvpes have you tried the infinity mini? It’s a hybrid between the two! Same lens as the stylus infinity, but weatherproof with a similar body design as the stylus epic! You should check it out sometime.
I found mine for a $1 at a yard sale. I think that there’s enough in circulation that it’s worth trying your luck at yard sales and thrift stores before dropping $200+
I’m so glad you’re back on the point and shoot wave 😭 missed seeing reviews like this and these type of cameras were the ones that started my film interest ! I now own the MJU 1 and the Olympus XA after buying them a few months ago and don’t regret spending the money one bit, your reviews may have had a large influence haha. Thanks for the vids my guy keep it up, slowly becoming my favorite film TH-camr.
Please, PLEASE, do not pay $250 for this camera. I found one of these on cragislist for $5 and another on ebay for $20. That was 4 months ago. They should not cost that much.
I've owned a MjuII from new. it's a nice camera but I prefer the XA series, especially the XA3. Since super compacts from Contax, Yashica, Fuji and Nikon went through the roof, prices have trickled down to the Olympus clamshells. There are lots of 35mm fixed lens compact cameras that offer good results for small change. I certainly wouldn't pay 250 for one, or even half that.
I searched for any point and shoot camera near my town. Went to .... 7 plus stores and I was about to give up.... and my last store had a bin full of cameras... digital cams... etc Picked up olympus stylus epic dlx ( panorama) for $5 and ricoh shotmaster af for $5 I guess from now on i need to keep on visiting stores ..
Dig! Cool to see you touch this camera. My parents bought these for my brother and I way back in the day, we were stoked to realize that it was the Stylus Epic now that we’re getting into the game. Can’t wait to go out and shoot it.
Those shots are amazing! How can I not be thrilled to shoot everyday when you do. I need to really push myself! Awesome review and honest! Can't wait to see what's next.
got an infinity stylus zoom 80 wide dlx in almost new state for 60 usd today only two scratches in the body no marks in the lens or anything, works splendidly, love how small and capable it is
Nice vid! I have a MJU ii also... it was my first real camera - my dad bought it for me in 1997 when I was 13. Used it last month in Disney World to take pics of my daughters on Kodak Gold 200... no surprise, they came out great!
I bought that camera new back in the day, and it had cost exactly 250 German marks, about $200 today, meaning the price had gone up. That being said, you can find Olympus mju2 for less than $50 if you comb thru craigslists. One thing mju2 (Olympus Stylus Epic) was good for is for photographing concerts / performances under artificial light, given you are using that spot meter, something original camera would always overexpose. Unfortunately, that camera was stolen from me years ago, but I can still shoot with my wife's mju1 :-)
Just finished shooting a roll with my Epic and found this video. I liked your review and pretty much agree with everything you stated. It's a fun little camera, but from what I hear it really shines indoors and exposes with it's internal flash really well. If you still have a chance, shoot some portraits using the flash.
Great photos!!! The limited was better! Auto rewind is great. There were not a lot of auto rewind back in the day, if they were they were way bigger! Very sharp if u use the right film. Fuji film was good, Kodak was ok for auto shooting cameras. The best was AFGA and Black and White was the bomb. Those photos i had framed👍 For color pallet it depended where you got your photos developed and if the chemicals were changed out that day in the auto-developers. like at Walgreens🙂 I usually go to a smaller photo developer if it was for a wedding. Love my limited 😀👍
I have had the mju I for the longest time now and for me it is more then enough. I dont fancy paying that price for a mju II for having a 2.8 instead of a 3.5
I bought one of these new in 1999 or so right before I moved to Berlin. It is a fun camera, although a bit small for my hands, especially trying to press the shutter. Also, if I remember correctly, the flash activates as default and resets every time you open the camera. Does have a spot meter, if I recall...
Do I think it might be the most brilliant little camera ever? Yes. Is it my favorite camera ever? No. That being said, I've decided to keep one because I do like to take it along for quick little grab shots, but I've sold 3 of them so far on eBay for 5-10x what I paid for them in thrifts. The last Epic I found was the Limited Edition, IOB, which I paid $35 for and sold for $400 to a buyer in Australia. Crazy.
Just love your videos! I can see that you are so much passionate about film photography and that reflects on the quality of your TH-cam channel. I will definitely subscribe. Cheers and good luck from Poland!
I had this camera back then and still have several rolls of Kodak Gold 200 with it. The pictures are just OK with many of them having a strange brownish hue. The camera exposure doesn't perform well in pictures with bright areas, poor indoor images with flash and objects more than 15 ft away. Overall, nothing to write home about these 2.8 Zuico lenses. Most of the time, landscape pictures are just ok and not that sharp, close ups in bright daylight are better with good saturation. The actual advantage of the camera is clearly its size - very pocketable - but this also has the disadvantage that the viewfinder is microscopic. I would say, worth perhaps around $50. You have plenty of other film cameras for under $20 off Ebay from early 2000's that perform much better but are also bulkier. The reason the Stylus is reaching now over $400 on Ebay (and climbing) is because of the 35mmc blog site that uploaded picture samples taken with the camera that have been heavily processed with Adobe Lightroom to the point of looking like SLR pictures.
Geez... Ive got one from the 90s... I got it for the sharp lense and good reviews and portability... I stumbled onto another one last week for like 3 bucks... Looked on eBay and their going for 300 plus... Crazyness... I wanna try it out again. Maybe this weekend!
Nice video! I specially like the shot of the person walking behind the pagola at 7:02! Great comparison, I feel pretty much the same, there are so many other cameras with sharper lenses and cheaper prices, but they don’t have the cult following the stylus epic has
Like every Olympus camera of this type this is a good camera but this f2.8 aperture I think does not give her the right to be so expensive and we all know it but on ebay everything is too expensive otherwise! I own the Olympus AF-1Mini and it's a great camera, you can check it if you want. I honestly do not see any difference in the images between these two cameras, As far as focussing speed is concerned, it is the same for both. Build quality of the AF 1 mini is great and also is waterproof camera. I think this Stylus Epic is a really good camera but $ 250 is too much. AF 1Mini costs around 20 maybe. I am from Europe! Great channel!
Not tried the AF-1Mini, looking at it it's almost like a Mju I Infinity that takes AA batteries instead of CR123s. Edit: Apparently the same 3.5 lens, very similar specs. its main difference is the battery selection. This is good to know, I really like the Mju I for carrying, so this may help if it goes dodo.
I picked up an Olympus Stylus Epic Zoom 115 on eBay for $35 and it's so fucking good! Photos came out crisp and clean. Loaded up some Portra 800 in that bad boy and i've been shooting with it quite a bit. I wish I had it in black though.
When the battery dies in the MJU II/Epic 2.8 you put it in the MJU/Stylus Infinity and use it quite a while yet. Any of my cameras that use that battery are the same. I don't know why the Infinity runs so long after the others have died. I love both these cameras.
No doubt the Stylus Epic has a great lens, but it is in no way worth $250. The lack of control is almost livable, but having to turn off the flash every single time you shoot kills it for that price. A couple of years ago before this thing got hyped up you could've easily picked one up for $30 online, and it was definitely worth it at that price. Nowadays though you could do better for the money. The Oly 35 ECR, Minox 35GT, Oly Infinity Stylus, and Oly XA are all better options for less money imho. Even if you're looking at that kind of cash I'd jump for a Rollei 35S before the Stylus Epic.
In my group they sell this stylus epic at cheap-mid prices and come with good condition too. But in my opinion i don’t trust electronics film camera that much but for the convenient to carry around... YES!
I have a Olympus stylus epic for two years and never noticed the lens looks closed at 6:34 ,, is it supposed to be like that? Mine looks like there is a hair inside
I agree with your sentiment. I have a Mju II and I like it a lot: it has a great lens, great size and very accurate metering. I would however never spend 250$ on one mainly because there's no way to fix it once it breaks.. There're still a few great automatic P&S cameras that you can find for spare change like Fuji DL-200 (with a 32mm 2.8 lens and TTL metering), Ricoh FF-9 (35mm, 3.5 lens) and Canon Sure Shot AF35MII (35 mm 2.8 lens and a ridiculously loud motor drive) and I'd recommend all those over the Mju II simply because they are a lot cheaper. 250$ also is half of what a Konica Hexar AF costs which is arguably the best analog P&S of all time, so if you have money to burn go for that one instead. All that said, keep your eyes peeled when going to thrift stores or sifting through craigslist or whatever, there's still a slim chance you can find one.
had the pleasure of using one of these that my brother got on ebay for £30 before the price spiked - my opinion is if you can find one for around £100 or cheaper its worth the money but i personally wouldn't spend the asking price that most of these are being sold at
hey man love the video! just got one myself. I'm curious as to what strap you have on yours? any links for that camera strap you're wearing around your neck?
Love the vid. Btw, how loud are the shutter/advance/rewind sound? Is the mju 2 quiet enough for stealthy, candid snaps? I've also read about the camera having some noticeable lag. Is the delay that bad? Will prefocusing completely eliminate it, or it's still there no matter what you do?
I have almost all of the Olympus point and shoot cameras the one I enjoy the mos is the Olympus Mju Zoom 115 as it is all weather and you can shoot panorama
MJU II is one of the most overrated cameras out there imo. Got one a few years back and sold it a couple weeks later. Like Jvpes said, go for the infinity stylus if you wan't an auto point and shoot. Or go for the XA series, which are quieter, better build, sharper lens, cheaper and smaller than the MJU II
Well done. While the size and lens on that camera are great features, the price point has gone way too high IMO. It sounds loud in the video, how does the winder sound compared to other compacts you've used? I've tried a handful of compacts the last few years and never found one I was very happy with. Earlier this week I dug out my original owner Minolta Freedom Zoom 150, threw in a new battery and it works just fine! I just put a roll of Superia 400 in today and plan to try this out. It is about 4.25" long, 2.25" tall and 1.5" deep.
Joe Lopez hey joe! The Minolta freedom zooms are some of my favorite point n shoots!! The freedom Zoom 115 date being my favorite. So cool to see you have one too! As for the sound, the shutter isn’t too bad BUT the rewind is pretty loud, but even then the stylus epics rewind is far from the loudest I’ve experienced. The L35AF is louder as well as the canon af35m
I ve seen a few in my lifetime (a lot weirdly new in package). But this is before i knew of it as a sought after 35mm so i didn't bother copping any of them :(
What happens when you DO NOT load film and slide open the front? Mine flashes "E" and if I press shutter, the barrel sticks out, I hear the shutter sound, and then the barrel stays out. is this normal? just got the camera so I don't know if this is normal or not.
I like the warmer images from the Stylus Infinity. But, the Epic is surprisingly sharp, and resolves a lot of detail. Too bad all the Epics will eventually produce light leaks through the lens barrel. How do you like the photos from the Epic compared to the L35AF?
@@markrestua1276 You sure can. I enjoy shooting the Infinity more but I bought a couple of remotes early on and the Epic does have that feature. I have several Olympus zooms the remote also works with and they are so slow that it could be handy to have. I can't say Ive used it often however. It seems like all that extra stuff defeats the purpose of a point and shoot.
I have always wanted to try one of these since I saw them on magazines in the 90s. I remember seeing them brand new in the stores but I didn´t manage to get one. Maybe I will soon... noisy camera as hell though.
Damn you are lucky! I’ve never had a true point and shoot. The closest thing for a point and shoot I have is either my Rollei or my XA which is always with me haha. Nevertheless I’d definitely stick to those two although I’d love to get an Infinity Stylus (mju 1)
I appreciate your images in this video are not altered and true to reality. Actually, all the craze with the Sylus Epic was created by misleading photographic blogs who publish HEAVILY processed images with Adobe Lightroom. Back in the days, no one would care for this camera more than for the competitors. Know what you are buying. Know that most images available on the internet blogs and sites like pbase.com or flickr are heavily embellished, "adjusted" as they call it, invoking various reasons for doing so. What is the point shooting film, then heavily modifying the image in Adobe ? May as well shoot with a good digital camera. On photo paper the Stylus Epic is not that impressive. Not that sharp (far less than those Lightroom tack sharp results), low contrast and saturation, metering can't cope with more complex scene lighting, plus you get a light brownish hue on most of the images. The point with these Stylus is they are compact for a 35mm, so it's easy to carry it around, that's why it sold so well back then. I think these Stylus are prized by photography hobbyists who actually are just having fun handling film canisters. A real 35mm picture is the one printed on paper, if one is searching for that nostalgic feeling. And for that purpose, the Stylus Epic is not worth it. A rangefinder or an SLR are more logical choices, and there are even some (bulkier) point & shoot cameras that produce much better pictures than the Stylus Epic.
Bought my special edition in brand new condition for €150. But that's pretty expensive. That said, it's my go to camera so in my case it's definitely worth it.
i bought one of those for 10R$ here in brazil (about 2.5USD). I've sold it a few days after, for 400 R$ (100USD). The camera worked perfectly, and it was cheaper then the battery itself.
Love the videos man! I have been watching your videos for a bit know you recommend the Minolta x700 but I am a bit stuck in between getting that or the canon A1, I found a mint condition Minolta x700 for 150 and comes with a warranty at a local shop. but the canon is cheaper like 100 also in mint condition but on eBay no warranty so I am just not sure on what to get, what would you get ?
Just got my first roll back from ny mju 2, gotta say im a little dissapointed, its such a hyped camera but in my opinion didnt perform better than the mju 1. It missed focus on quite a few pictures, and I didnt find it sharper than the 1, also exposed wrong at times. I own the mju 1 too, perfect focus, exposure every time and also nicer to hold and shoot with. Got the 2 for a good price tho, so will sell it and make some money and keep the mju 1, prefer it over the 2!
I like when you do the pictures of the cars but the best ones are the ones of the cars where you frame it to be very 1 dimensional. make a zine of all these
Evem tho ur video enforced a tone that dissuades people from getting the MJU 2, thanks to it ironically now I know im getting it, yeah the price tag is fucked up but what attracts me is how small and compact it is, im gonna travel to a third world country soon & i need a camera that doesnt scream for attention
Yeah I feel it's waaaay too overrated for what it is, as you know i've shot with a lot of epic zooms & honestly the images are probably just as sharp and the quality just as crisp as the MJU II but I also get the weather proofing on them. If you want the image quality at a fraction of the cost I would go with basically any of the stylus epic zooms, if size is an issue the Zoom 80 is an extremely compact camera, probably one of the smallest point & shoots i've used. I personally use the zoom 115 cuz I originally bought it for concerts but also don't want too much zoom. I've used the zoom 140 & 170 also and they all produce great images, but the downside is the camera body gets bigger as you go up in focal length. But honestly the zoom 80 is amazing. Probably not that much bigger than the MJU II honestly and it costs WAY less.
The Mju2 is better in almost every way than the Mju1. Period. If you take cost away it is a much much better image making tool. Most of the shots I get from my Mju2 are as good if not better than a lot of my SLR images. That lens is SHARP and nice and contrasty. TBH I think your subject and the overcast day didnt make for the best test for this amazing little camera. Another area where the 2 shines over the 1 is with its autofocus. The mju2 is generally spot on where the mju1 misses focus a lot in my experience.
When photographing objects closeup this camera and lense does give pretty good bokeh provided that the aperture is wide open, so you need enough light.

Andres Ruiz I agree plus Moriyama Daido used the Mju 1 and did great work with it
what film roll did you use for this
Found a brand new one at the thrift store yesterday for 5$. I almost cried
found an Infinity Stylus for $3 the other day in great condition with a brand new roll of film in it. Pretty much yelped in-store.
I found mine for a $1 at a yard sale. I think that there’s enough in circulation that it’s worth trying your luck at yard sales and thrift stores before dropping $200+
Well it sells at 400$ here in singapore lol bummer
I also found a brand new one while thrifting! and i got it only for 4$ 😁😁😁
Dude I literally found one today for the same!!
lmao "we in a really bad neighbor hood right now"
*is in white suburbia*
+1! If anyone is sketchy it’s this guy! “Why is he taking pictures of my neighborhood ? Is he casing the joint???”
I’m so glad you’re back on the point and shoot wave 😭 missed seeing reviews like this and these type of cameras were the ones that started my film interest ! Please, PLEASE, do not pay $250 for this camera. I found one of these on cragislist for $5 and another on ebay for $20. That was 4 months ago. They should not cost that much.
they are worth exactly what they are selling for. they sell for exactly what the market is willing to pay for them.
wow seriously ebay for 20? I got one for about $12 in Hong Kong but the low price are really rare, pricing generally at $100-150

William Young haha that’s dope!!! Happy shooting y’all :)
It's my first film camera, thank you for making a video! I'm so excited to develop my photos
That’s crazy you made this vid bro . I literally just got mine yesterday for 100$ flat

I've seen them both being compared and I think there's a massive difference in night shots. If that's what you're into maybe the MJU II is worth it.
Hella creepin on cars lmao this was sick bro! That logo lookin nice too 👀
Absolutely adore mine. Managed to pick it up for £100. Never going back to anything else.

I'm still in the Olympus XA camp. Manual focus rangefinder and shutterspeed priority. Even smaller than the Stylus. Best bang for your buck? XA4.
woah I just uploaded a video on the Mju I and then saw this on the suggested haha - dope video bro!!
one of my best photographic purchases was a MJU I for 19 bucks at an antique shop. I've gotten razor sharp results with it
I bought one of these new in 1999 or so right before I moved to Berlin. It is a fun camera, although a bit small for my hands, especially trying to press the shutter. Also, if I remember correctly, the flash activates as default and resets every time you open the camera. Does have a spot meter, if I recall...
Just got my Olympus infinitely stylus zoom 140. I’m ready to go play with it thanks to you.
Starting of the day right 👌🏼. Watching ur videos 😂👍
Yesssss haha your comment made those sketchy shots worth it :)
You can shoot the Epic with a remote also and the shutter will stay open longer than the stylus in low light. I like both of them.
I just got one of these free from my grandpa, had no idea it's worth so much, but to keep it or sell it, that is the question.
I just bought one for $20. I can't wait to shoot some street photography!
Agent Cube from where?!
@@noorbissan123 My local camera store. I snatched it up as soon as I saw it. Its been working great!

Wow I really liked the photos, they are beautiful!!!
thank you

Go check it out!!

Mine looks closed
No it doesn't close like that, just the dark area over the lens making it look closed.
The clam shell cover slides over the lens to protect it.
Is the stylus epic zoom worth buying. Or the 35mm prime is only good
had the pleasure of using one of these that my brother got on ebay for £30 before the price spiked - my opinion is if you can find one for around £100 or cheaper its worth the money but i personally wouldn't spend the asking price that most of these are being sold at
Nice review ironically I picked up the Limited edition of the Stylus Epic over the weekend at a thrift store for $4.00. Seems to be working just fine.
Can you make a video on how to print negatives out
Nice video! Some days I could use a film point and shoot. Do you know of any Minoltas that would do as good a job? Thanks.
thrifted a stylus epic for $7 at a local thrift store, pretty mint condition too :)
I think the film they gave you was expired?? The colors seem off
Any opinions on the Samsung Slim AF cameras? Similar size, similar lens (35mm f3.5,) and I've heard great things!
I have the Olympus AF-1 Super and it has the same lens as the MJU ii. Would love to see a side by side comparison.
Tomtac98 🤑I’ll look into it
Please make this happen! :)
MJU I's price sky-rocketing in 3... 2... 1... cool review as always dude
hey man love the video! just got one myself. I'm curious as to what strap you have on yours? any links for that camera strap you're wearing around your neck?
Its the original Olympus Camera strap that came with the camera.
Haha that’s awesome!! I’ve heard the zoom variants were more expensive back in the day?
MJU II is one of the most overrated cameras out there imo. Got one a few years back and sold it a couple weeks later. Like Jvpes said, go for the infinity stylus if you wan't an auto point and shoot. Or go for the XA series, which are quieter, better build, sharper lens, cheaper and smaller than the MJU II
just bought one today at a camera store for $40!!!! let's goooooooo
Was it Superia? Liked like a roll of fuji 200
Haha honestly, i think the l35af might be a little sharper, BUT form factor goes to the epic forsure. The l35 is like lugging around a brick! lol
You can shoot the Epic with a remote and shoot in lower light.
I can just use the self timer
@@markrestua1276 You sure can. I enjoy shooting the Infinity more but I bought a couple of remotes early on and the Epic does have that feature. I have several Olympus zooms the remote also works with and they are so slow that it could be handy to have. I can't say Ive used it often however. It seems like all that extra stuff defeats the purpose of a point and shoot.
What is your favorite point and shoot?? Would you still recommend the canon autoboy af35ml?? I'm thinking about it !
pieceofadrian my favorite point n shoot, is still the Olympus Infinity Stylus BUT the canon AF35m is a great camera!
I have always wanted to try one of these since I saw them on magazines in the 90s. I remember seeing them brand new in the stores but I didn´t manage to get one. Maybe I will soon... noisy camera as hell though.
Could get a yashica t3 for that price
Do you think the t3 is better? I just bought one, haven’t tested it out yet tho
What film type did you use??
I'm on my second Stylus Epic and it's started to get light leaks like my first one, I'm just going to deal with the light leaks.
Damn you are lucky! I’ve never had a true point and shoot. The closest thing for a point and shoot I have is either my Rollei or my XA which is always with me haha. Nevertheless I’d definitely stick to those two although I’d love to get an Infinity Stylus (mju 1)
How did u develop them?
i have one and it’s a pretty solid camera but i’m temped to just sell it and buy a nice slr
Just found one at goodwill for $3.99 USD…cant complain at all
I appreciate your images in this video are not altered and true to reality.
Just purchased mine this week.🙈 Got it for 13 pounds.🇬🇧🙌🏻💕 But I did pay way more for shipping then what the camera cost me.🤷🏻♀️
Bought my special edition in brand new condition for €150. But that's pretty expensive. That said, it's my go to camera so in my case it's definitely worth it.
i bought one of those for 10R$ here in brazil (about 2.5USD). I've sold it a few days after, for 400 R$ (100USD). The camera worked perfectly, and it was cheaper then the battery itself.
onde tu encontrou?
I got a stylus 120 for free. Is it any good? (I haven't had a chance to shoot it)
I love your B-Roll. Makes it interesting
do you develop your own?
Love the videos man! I have been watching your videos for a bit know you recommend the Minolta x700 but I am a bit stuck in between getting that or the canon A1, I found a mint condition Minolta x700 for 150 and comes with a warranty at a local shop. but the canon is cheaper like 100 also in mint condition but on eBay no warranty so I am just not sure on what to get, what would you get ?
Abdul Haq Shaik is definitely ef the x-700 with the warranty just because they are film cameras and they can break anytime!
Always go with the one with the warranty. These cameras are old and if someone is guaranteeing it, it's SO worth the extra $$.
I just wish I knew where to develop film at now as I’m new to this :( I recently shot digital slr
I have had great results from the Darkroom.
There are still a lot of labs. The best ones you'll need to mail your film (unless you live nearby). Google is still a good resource to find them.
I like when you do the pictures of the cars but the best ones are the ones of the cars where you frame it to be very 1 dimensional. make a zine of all these
Didn't expect 6:01
Dude Im so pumped just ordered a stylus infinity zoom for $6
Where???
Cant wait to join photo journalism...
The mju2 is generally spot on where the mju1 misses focus a lot in my experience.
i got mine for 5 aud and it works really well
at what dpi do you scan your negative? :)
John Kawmı 3200 :)
sheesh that must take forever lol
olympus af-1 super !!!
Do you edit your photos?👌🏻
ever so slightly yes, but the images are also effected by the color grading on the video
is bokeh basically a no go when it comes to point and shoot cameras?
When photographing objects closeup this camera and lense does give pretty good bokeh provided that the aperture is wide open, so you need enough light.
It's not a no-go, but it IS harder with a point and shoot since you can't control aperture and shutter speed.
Got myself a mju ii / stylus epic. So stoked!!!
just bought it for 2$ in local garage sale. works perfectly. I think it was a good deal?
How did he get the pics from the rolls or the camera?🤔
Maria Gissel Morales Languidey I’m guessing he got them developed onto a cd
So lucky I have my Olympus Stylus Epic Limited Edition
i see you with that limited 🔥
