    Update : After exploring the system more, both vehicles will hold their charge if you put it into HEV mode, it won't charge but it WILL hold.
    One of our favourite categories is the PHEV Plug-In Hybrid SUV. Kia and Hyundai both have a very similar and compelling package with one offering 3 rows for extra passengers

    Kudos for comparing these closely related vehicles. Reviewers of either KIA or Hyundai vehicles frequently act as if the corresponding vehicle from the other automaker doesn't exist. In reality, of course, such vehicles are heavily cross shopped and direct comparisons are extremely valuable.

    Love this review! Very informative! While you do get an impressive 79mpge, there's no EV only mode like some other vehicles have (Ex. the Rav4 Prime they also reviewed). I also appreciate seeing the kids and their space in the back. That's a big factor for many suv buyers. Nice job on the video!

    Happy New Year guys. My wife has the new Tucson, which also has the new style rear windshield wiper underneath the spoiler, just like the Kia. We would have to say that although the wiper fairs better in the winter, it does not clean the rear windshield as well throughout the rest of the year! Welcome back Cynthia. It's nice to hear your comments of 'real feel' driving, other than just the stats! Stay warm.

    I have a 2022 Santa Fe PHEV, my experience has been that in cold weather heated seats and steering wheel are adequate for most short trips BUT the engine will come on for defrosting the windows. If it is colder outside we use the climate control which does start the gas engine BUT only to heat the engine coolant for the cabin heaters and generate some power to the battery. If you look at the power distribution animation on the dashboard you can see the gas engine isn’t being used to power the wheels. Also in my car, the engine only runs at 1100 -1200 RPM and doesn't use much gas, not much different from idling a car to warm it up.
    To save your battery power instead of using it all when you start your trip, you can use the HEV/EV button by the mode selector wheel. When you want to save SOC (state of charge) select the HEV mode and it will drive like a hybrid trying to maintain the SOC at the level you manually selected the HEV mode, you can use the HEV/EV button to select between Automatic/HEV/EV modes.

      Not if you want to use AC during summer. Once you run out of ev range it will consume more petrol then a regular hybrid because of the heavier battery in the phev, 450lbs is a lot of weight to drag around.

    As a follow up to your remarks about the lack of ability to choose the specific drive mode (gas/electric), I called the local Mitsubishi dealership in my city and was assured that, with the Outlander, the driver can select full electric drive mode. The rep told me they are expecting to see the 2023 Outlander on their lot in Halifax in October/November. The rep also noted that they expect the Outlander PHEV’s electric range to nearly double. Worth waiting to see.

    I have the Kia Niro PHEV. The "charge hold" in HEV works mostly. I could do a long trip and roughly maintain most of the battery. Except it gets used up on hills (like Coquihalla hwy). Switching to Sport mode would keep the RPM higher and probably keep the charge better. I'm going to try next time. Last time the battery went to 2% which was really low, and we were limited to 105hp gas motor on a big hill. 85kmh max speed, reminded me of my 88 civic.
    Seems the PHEVs need a resistance heater and / or heat pump for winter heating. Seems cheap but I guess they don't do it. We still get about 5L / 100km just with the engine idling to keep cabin heat. I agree, need to be in EV if possible in town. When it was below -15C the car stayed in HEV the whole time, I guess to maintain higher engine temperature.

  • @davidcunningham7432
    @davidcunningham7432 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It’s good to know that the gas/EV interactivity is solely regulated by the vehicle on both the Sorrento and the Santa Fe. It’s a shame the driver can’t simply select the preferred mode. I would much prefer the EV mode for my city driving. I’m hoping the revised Outlander PHEV will allow such a choice. Good advice on your part to wait to see what the 2023 Outlander will bring to the table. I currently drive a 2017 Honda CRV Touring. Although Honda does build a CRV PHEV, apparently it’s not offered in Canada! That’s a mistake because as I prepare to update my ride in the next year or so, I plan on seriously considering a plug-in hybrid.

    • @richardludvigh700
      @richardludvigh700 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Its actually not fully true. You can drain the battery and drive 50+ km without starting the engine. Usually the reviewers don't have an idea how.
      The difference between Rav4 Prime and any Kia/Hyundai PHEV is:
      1. Rav4 Prime has heat pump - can heat in colder weather - Kia/Hyundai will turn on the engine if you need heat. Wanna keep pure EV ? U have to turn of heating in winter otherwise the gas engine will start
      2. Rav4 Prime can be floored while staying in EV. In Kia/Hyundai u have to watch the power gauge. If you accelerate too much the gas engine will kick in to help.
      Never the less. You can drive pure EV on those in winter provided u don't floor them and use heat (which ofc is a not something you will do) , nevertheless the rav4 prime has shown that the heat pump can't keep up with real cold anyway.

    My Niro PHEV uses the ICE for heat so I have to use the heated seats/steering wheel and the temp turned down as long as I can but they have a heat exchanger on the exhaust manifold so they maximize the heat retention from using this system. Obviously here in the FV during this cold snap when you filmed that was not going to work. But the gas consumption is pretty low when it does run. Pretty sure the Sorento and Santa Fe have a heat pump as well but it's been really hard to research. To be fair I tried the first winter to use the engine as little as possible until it was pointed out that having the engine and barely using it may be causing more long term issues just to save a few dollars now. Assuming the Outlander uses a similar set up to the outgoing model, even though you can use the EV range more it's actually going to be less efficient to operate. Of course as it is now basically a Nissan joint venture it may be different.
    Nice video though, I love that I have found some local content to watch for real world usage 👍

    Canada gets some much better-equipped vehicles, both Hyundai, Kia, and VW as well. As you complain about the no lock button on the tailgate, at least you got amber rear turn signals, US only got red which is ridiculous. And US Sorento doesn't have that lit up front door pane. Also no terrain mode in the US. As of VW, the ID4 in US has no heat pump but the Canadian version does.

    In the video they mentioned Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV coming soon. I test drove the 2022 Outlander GT (highest trim) and was underwhelmed. It’s not as big as either of these two. The acceleration of the Outlander was not impressive. Coming to a stop on a small Newport Beach hill the car had a terrible transition from regen brake to hard brake.
    Even though exterior is very nice on the Outlander it just felt nothing like the awesome feel of the Santa Fe in Limited.
    In Los Angeles they were asking $5K over MSRP for the Outlander. Found one dealership that let me preorder my Santa Fe Limited PHEV at MSRP and I drove right over and put down my order with a $500 refundable deposit.
    2 month wait for my order which isn’t too bad at all.

    • @AK-nj7wj
      @AK-nj7wj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How are you liking the Santa Fe and do you have any real world experience as to how it compares with the Sorento? I'm looking at these two and for me Santa Fe seems more premium luxurious I guess versus the Sorrento has more space and even though the third row is small it's still a usable third row to some extent.

    • @JonMoralesLA
      @JonMoralesLA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AK-nj7wj I really love my Santa Fe. It’s been a great vehicle thus far. I don’t plug it in all the time as unfortunately I found out I could not charge in our condo as originally planned. But it’s been pretty good on fuel economy even though I drive on the more assertive side here in Los Angeles.
      I’ve seen a coworkers Sorento from the exterior and must say I do like the exterior of the Sorento a bit better but like the interior of the Santa Fe best. I don’t put much in the back storage are of my Santa Fe where the Sorento has the 3rd row. It’s a huge bit of storage for the Santa Fe in that space but a bit harder to reach since you have to lift the mat and reach further back to access that space. I keep the charger cable back there and nothing else so far. Maybe on a road trip or something I might make more use of that space.
      So that being said I think for many people the 3rd row seat that can fold away may be the more desirable thing to have than the underfloor space that is not the easiest to access for daily use.
      In Los Angeles it was really difficult to get my hands on a Santa Fe PHEV at MSRP and impossible to find a Sorento PHEV at MSRP so I stuck with the Santa Fe PHEV and scored one at MSRP with great difficulty and a battle with the dealership.
      My biggest gripe is just not being able to take advantage of plugging in more often, although I do charge at work some days. The electricity is always cheaper than gas prices these days even at the costly pay chargers so there’s that. I’ve gotten used to any minor qualms as you do with any vehicle. Like I wish the suspension didn’t telegraph quite as much of Los Angeles roads into the cabin but it’s weird cause it’s still a great ride and in ways feels less road that my wife’s 2019 BMW X3 but on certain bumpy roads it just telegraphs different. I don’t really notice it anymore because I’ve either gotten used to it or maybe after 3000 miles the cars broken in a bit more.

It helps if you have your arms full in putting stuff IN the vehicle but what happens when I get to the other end and get stuff OUT? My arms are full again, so how do I close it? I have the 22 santa fe Limited and the reason the gas engine come on when you turn on the climate control is so that the heater blower don't deplete the battery. the engine is only powering the altenator and the altenator is powering the blower for heat or A/C, but not engage to the transmition. (that's a good thing) if you go into your cluster and change the settings to show the picture of the car ( like 18:55) , it will show you everytime what the engine is powering. if the engine did not come on when you turn on when you turn on the heater or AC, then you would not get 30 miles range on EV only. it's roughly 2 kW to run the heat/ AC Blower and your EV range would be cut by 17% . This shows me that you are doing a review but you do not understand how the mechanics are suppose to work at all. in my 2022 santa fe, i can run on pure EV. i just do not turn on any accessories.

      I just know that on PHEV like the RAV4 purine, I can get all the EV miles without the gas engine ever kicking in even at highway speeds with full climate control on. I got over 70 kms of straight EV with one. This system will still get good results but not as good as the Prime. I also tried different instances without the climate control on at all and the gas engine would still kick on within a minute or less in EV mode when it’s cold out.

      @@EverydayReviews2022: My 2022 santa fe can run on pure EV. there is a button that you can press that will change from EV to PHEV to Automatic. just press the button untill you get EV. My point is, wishing to make a PHEV run all the car accessories (heater, fan, instrument cluster, radio, navigation, Head light, Break light) on pure EV, on such a small (13.8KW) battery makes no sense. you'll cut the EV distance to about 66%, to about 33km or 21 miles. your anology makes no sence at all.
      did you say, you get 70KM or 43.6 miles RAV4 purine can get all the EV miles with with climate control on. this i got to see. So with climate control off, the RAV4 Range should be higher then what the manufacture manual says(68KM). i have never tested the RAV4 but i will soon and i'll get back to you. also, the santa-fe is a bigger and heavier SUV.

    I can't believe that she would call out that the rear hatch button is lower than typically found on most cars. Is this society really getting so lazy that they expect everything to be handed to them? So she had to lean a little. Sheesh. Some people will complain about anything. BTW, I still liked the video the the overall review. :-)

    Ditch the intro music. Seriously ‘tons of room’ & you like the logo. Zero interest to me. What about also talking about or post on the video screen, the stats in inches!

    Having the engine kick in for heat or more power, is not all that bad, otherwise buy an EV. There are Prime drivers who have ruined their engines by never using them for months, and then they finally took a long road trip and got stranded on the road. Gas goes stale. Corrosion in parts. Just ask Toyota mechanics. th-cam.com/video/SEK0wN_IqgA/w-d-xo.html
