- GERMAN FOOD, BEER & TREATS we (sometimes) miss as GERMANS LIVING IN THE UK// Hello everyone! First of all, we are extremely sad about the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. It all happened when I (Kirsten) was travelling to film for TH-cam and it took some days to sink it to be honest. We've had this video already prepared and hope a bit of a distraction is okay.
We always get so many questions about what kind of food, beer & treats we sometimes miss as Germans living in the UK. We thought it would be a great idea to film everything we had while visiting our family. Of course it seems like so much but this was filmed over a course of weeks so it would never be something we would have on a daily basis. We came to realise that so many German dishes contain a lot of meat and during the week and at home, we usually eat plant based so this was a huge exception for us. Living in the UK, this is probably one of the big German culture shocks!! So today we hope you enjoy our little German food tour taking you from German Bratwurst to a little German beer tour, Weisswurst, German potato salad and so much more. Enjoy!

I live in Pennsylvania USA. Until recently, I never spent much time thinking about my German ancestry. Watching your video makes me realize how much of German culture there is here where I live. The flowers in boxes everywhere, the food, the countryside. It’s no wonder Germans were attracted to settling in Pennsylvania years ago!
In fact, there is a neighborhood in Philadelphia called Germantown. And, of course, The so called Pennsylvania Dutch are in fact, Pennsylvania German and some people still speak their German dialect along with English.
I was born n raised in Pa I lived near Hershey now I’m living in Florida retired. 😊
I also grew up in Pennsylvania! My grandpa spoke what is called Pennsylvania Dutch, which is really German! So many things on this youtube site remind me of this area in York and Lancaster County in PA! I love watching this channel. I also love watching all things you do in England!
I'm originally from PA and my Mom's ancestry is Pennsylvania Dutch and although I unfortunately live in NJ now my heart is in PA. We lived in Bucks County but I try to visit Lancaster area once a year. I love going there and love the food and people!!
German here east coast🙂.we have a restaurant here called Fritz und Franz so we went there and the food was good ( my sauerkraut is still better! 😁😁) First Time in my Life I had a Bit Beer . But I told my Hubs I want to visit Pennsylvania.one day if all goes well with the world
So sad about Queen Elizabeth‘s passing 😢 she represented so much to the British people and the world x. There is no equal. Thanks for sharing all your delicious meals 😍😘
We were quite sad about her passing, still are but glad that she had a long life! It will be a huge change.

German cuisine is so delicious! My grandmother, who was raised in the Hamburg area of Germany, cooked my grandfater's favorite dishes from southern Germany. He was from Mogglingen. Ah, it takes me back to having dinner at my German Grandparents home! So many wonderful memories 💖 We do do make German dishes on our house but they just don't seem like Grandmother's and Grandfather....he could bake anything! Thank you so much, and deep condolences in mourning the Queen .

The German potato salad we make here near Philadelphia is made with cooked potatoes, bacon, onion, bacon fat, vinegar & sugar dressing. It is sooo delicious.
Thank you for reminding me! That is basically the recipe I used to make. Maybe it’s not authentic, but it’s really good. Haven’t made it in maybe 20 years. Autumn is the perfect time for it, so will make the effort soon.
We make it with fried onions and fried bacon, beef broth, little cornichons which we cut in little pieces, vinegar or liquid from the cornichons, parsley, black pepper from the mill, freshly grounded nutmeg and mayonnaise. Greetings from Germany and guten Appetit!

This video lifted my spirits this evening! All the food looks so absolutely delicious, and wonderful! I loved seeing simple family life, barbecuing in the backyard. I feel like I was sitting right there with you! And wow, are the grocery stores there always so clean? Actually every place you went into seemed very tidy, and I can’t say that for here in Arizona, 😂 thank you for letting us spend time with you, and reminding me of how much I need to visit that part of the world ❤️

Delicious! Regardless of where we are from, missing certain things from our native country (or city) happens to us all. Glad that you have been able to enjoy, and bring back to the UK, some of your favorite German food and drink. Have NEVER seen a BBQ like that, but it certainly did the job. Hallo ihr beiden, das war eine schöne Auswahl deutscher Köstlichkeiten. Alles, was ich so kenne aus Kindheitstagen, vor allem aus der Küche meiner Oma, da wurde noch viel deftiger und üppiger gekocht als heute. Diese Kuchentheke, einfach herrlich. We were in Germany many years ago and lived on pastries. So beautiful and delicious. We weren't too fond of the German dishes, but we really didn't know what to order. Everything looked delicious in your video. We may need to take another trip to Germany to try something new!

Me told my Saarland colleagues about their 'Schwenker'. So one with the drum of a washing machine. And Kirsten's father used one of those. Very impressive.
I love sauerkraut with wurst and mustard. Hahndorf was settled by germans in the nineteenth century and although german is no longer spoken herecexcept by more recent arrivals culinary traces remain! Bienenstich, pretzels, wurst sauerkraut , strudel
Love to see all the German dishes! I've only had German potato salad with bacon, onion, mustard, sugar, vinegar and oil. The dish your mother made looks good also! We have a German town named Frankenmuth near where I grew up and when I go there I enjoy good German dishes. Now it makes me want to make those dishes! When you get home, you'll have to look at your wedding pictures again to refresh your memories. Thanks for your wonderful videos!
Thanks so much! There are so many potato salad recipes around and usually the South of Germany is very different to the North. My Mum makes a Northern version.

Janis here. We use the tripod in Canada as well. It’s mostly used with a Cast iron dutch oven. We do use the grill as well. Usually when hunting. It’s easier to take with you to set up base camp. Thank you for sharing. It’s so nice you take us on your trips. 🥰

I taught English for a year in Braunschweig 1974/75. I fell in love with Bratwurst and Schnitzels - which you can thankfully get online in the UK. I drank coffee for the first time - and it was heavenly with Black Forest Gateau.

This was wonderful! Totally unique! Germany is very beautiful & so enchanting! I loved it! Also, the food at the barbeque, as well as the 'Rinderrouladen', especially, looked delicious & this was such a unique way of barbequing too! The cakes & desserts looked divine & so scrumptious as well! The Ice cream Parlor was charming & the 'spaghetti' Ice Cream you ordered is really 'cute!' I am certain that "Children' of all ages, all over the world, would love their Ice Cream served in such a 'cute' & unique way. Yet, sadly, I have never seen it served this way before. Well, 'children' are certainly missing out on such a 'cute' & delightful treat, that's for sure! The Castle & grounds are truly lovely as well! What a beautiful place to visit or to have had your Wedding Photos taken. It would be delightful & so intriguing to see you both from back then, especially in your Wedding Photos, but, we certainly realize, understandably, that this would be too personal & imposing on your Privacy. So, we will just have to use our imagination instead, but I am sure you both would have still looked as 'lovely' as always! 'Thank you for sharing this totally unique & delightful experience!

I feel like I gained several pounds just watching this video! Amazing food, particularly the cakes! I think there is a shop in York that sells many German Beers near the shambles (beers from around the globe). We will have to see if we can find the ones you featured the next time we are in York.

Boy, I sure was getting hungry seeing all the wonderful foods and cakes! I wish there would be German restaurants in my area. I've used my dad's recipe for German potato salad, which uses bacon and onions and has a piquant flavor from apple vinegar and sugar. It can be served warm or cold. I'm so glad you two were having a great time and hung out with your parents!

Those rolls for the bratwurst seem to be standard over Germany? I love having those at the Christmas markets and the small Nuremberger Wurst fits so well - usually you get two wurst.

That potato salad looks divine (I hope you can prepare it on your show sometime), and that plate of sauerkraut and sausages--- yum! The desserts and coffee are on a whole other level! And congratulations on 30 years of wedded bliss!! you two are still like newlyweds. So satisfying to see Joerg drinking his favorite brew at the bbq grill in the backyard; he looks so relaxed! One little observation: the tablecloth on the outdoor table with the images of various flowers is just so adorable!! I bet your mother has had it for a very long time. Hello adorable couple! Love and enjoy your videos. I recently found out that my grandfathers ancestry back to the 1600's , came from Rheinland Palatine Germany. I'm totally gob-smacked!! Never saw that coming. And I have been to Germany back in the 80s and had my first born in Wurzburg. However, this has opened up a whole new world and perspective.
