  • BUYING GERMAN GROCERIES IN ENGLAND: Where we find the things we like & miss from Germany// Hello lovely people, In today's video we're taking you grocery shopping in England with us. But not just any shopping: We're looking for German groceries here in England! And although we can't get everything here, there's still plenty of choice if you fancy a taste of good old Germany - be it chocolate like Ritter Sport or Kinder Schokolade or some Wiener. Many shops here have German products, you can find them at Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury but of course also at Aldi and Lidl. We know that Nutella was invented by the Italians, however for Germany and Northern Europe it's produced at the Ferrero plant in Stadtallendorf in Germany and since we grew up with it, it's just part of our culture as well. Hope you enjoy the video. Kirsten & Joerg xx
    Also an addition about eating gluten free: I'm not celiac and only have to avoid wheat but can have rye. Since this is not something that's very common in the UK, we buy gluten free products for me here. After 23 years, I know my way around.
    P. S. As mentioned in our community tab and Instagram last week, we want to thank each and everyone of you again for sending so many messages regarding the flooding in Germany. Our family and friends are all safe and haven't been affected but so many people are and it's a terrible tragedy.

    Thank you for the shopping trip. I'm American and also American Indian/Native. I have an interest in foods that are indigenous to the New World (North, Central and South American continents). I'm not sure if you know that chocolate is originally from Central America and has been used as a drink for 4,000 years. It was brought to Europe by Spanish explorer, Hernan Cortez in the 1500's. So many European companies have made wonderful chocolate products for years. Definitely one of my favorite foods :)

    SO many types of sausage. My grandfather was a pork butcher and made both fresh and smoked sausage, liver pudding, ring bologna, Lebanon bologna and summer sausage. All were delicious and I grew up on it all.

    Very interesting video! As you know Nutella is actually italian, even if it is produced in several countries, as many big brands do. His inventor was Michele Ferrero (the one of the famous brand of chocolate products) and was from northwestern Italy. Kinder is Ferrero as well and even if some products of this brand have non-italian names (Mon Chéri is a french name, Kinder is a german word, Pocket Coffee is english etc.), they are all italian products of Ferrero.

    We are lucky where I live. We have a large German heritage population (Huntsville, AL) leftover from the NASA rocket program. Hence, we have a lovely European market nearby. She stocks a lot of the good European brands - Hengstenberg, Knorr, Teakanne, Thomy, Dr. Oetker, etc. Lots of good stuff. Wursts, and other meats, too!

    I loved this video. Brought back a lot of memories of both the British Grocers and the wonderful German products as we lived in both countries. We miss how much less expensive groceries are in the UK and Europe than here in the USA. The products are so much better there. We also miss all the yummy chocolates. If I remember correctly Aldi or Lidl in Germany used to carry some delicious frozen pretzels and included the salt in little packets. The kids would love these for an after school snack. Thank you for sharing. Have a wonderful week.

    As an American , I have bought Weihenstephaner beer from a store near me and it is better beer then many American beers. Since I have German heritage , I grew up having sauerkraut throughout the year. Not just for a special occasion. And my mom would cook it with pork roast, pork chops and ribs. Not too much with bratwurst. Another great video!

    I don't normally watch food videos, but as it was Kirsten and Joerg I made an exception. It was actually very informative. I had always mistakenly assumed Nutella and Knorr were English (we say 'Norr' ).so its good to be put right on that. For many years there was a German Wurst stall near Bayswater Station in London, which I used whenever I was in the area. I became quite addicted to Bratwurst. I have to agree with Kirsten about Swiss chocolate, it was always held up as the best during my youth, but it seems to have been knocked off the number 1 spot by Belgium in recent times.
    Another first class film from you. Stay well.

      Aww that means so so much, thank you! Nutella was invented by Italians but it's produced in Germany for the Northern European market and Germany and since we grew up with it, it has become part of our culture. Knorr is definitely very very German, Joerg worked next to the Knorr plant and development centre in Heilbronn (where it was founded).

    Yes, we do have Ritter Sport Honey Salted Almond in Germany and it is one of my favourites!
    And isn't Nutella Italian?

    • @KirstenJoerg
      @KirstenJoerg  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yum! Yes, it was invented by the Italians and is produced in Germany for the German as well as the North European market.

    Wilfried and I prefer to buy 6 small Frankfurter Wuerstchen from MEICA in a glas. They taste a little bit better than Wiener from MEICA. - Very interesting to find German products, but they are expensive - like in Denmark. Chocolate from Switzerland, Belgium and CADBURY are for us the best brands! - Liane and Wilfried -

    We go to the Lidl every week here in the Netherlands and always buy Ritter Sport and also Nutella.. but the latter just eat it in the weekends otherwise I would be gaining too much.. there is a German week every so often indeed.. I love to see Joerg getting so hungry from all the food in front of him .. 🤤

    • @KirstenJoerg
      @KirstenJoerg  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I agree, we don't eat Nutella every single day hence we don't need to buy it very often. A jar lasts ages.

    Truly have become a fan of your adventures. I am obsessed with grocery shopping and cooking and baking so I quite enjoyed this foray into Lidl in the UK. We recently got a Lidl near me in the US and I love it! Thanks for sharing your shopping expedition!

    I love watching you two! This was particularly interesting to watch as there were so many brands I didn’t even realise we’re German! I need to go to Lidl (and Waitrose if I’m feeling posh! 😄) and get myself some of these delicious German treats! My 10 year old really wants to visit Germany as she’s never been, maybe some German food will keep her going until we can visit 🇩🇪☺️

    Ein sehr schöner Einkaufsbummel mit euch! Wir schauen immer nach Wurst aus Deutschen für die Brotzeit. Typisch deutsch halt 😁 Merkt ihr einen Unterschied im Angebot der Waren aus Europa, und auch im Preis, seit dem Brexit?

    Ah...😍. I'm not so aware of the German sausages , but i do know (and miss now) German chocolates! Aaaah Ritter Sport is the best! 😍🥰🤤 And also, we used to joke with friends that we " want to be a cow in Switzerland- greenery and milk chocolate! Best ever! "

    This was fun! I have always been interested in foods from other cultures! I am in the US, my background is Welsh/Irish with some Dutch. I LOVE German food, at least what I've tasted in the US but would love to taste real homemade German food.

    Joerg, my grandfather came from Germany and his name was Schwab. It could have been changed when he landed in the states but I assume he came from the Swabia area. Any thoughts on that.
