13:55 - I used gasket sealer around the speaker cutout when doing a custom speaker install in the doorcards of my car. Whether or not it was actually beneficial, I have no idea, but as I had the sealer on hand, I thought I might as well use it.

RTV Silicone will degrade foam speaker surrounds. I don't know if it would have an affect on treated foam surrounds.

@@LionWithTheLamb The sealer is not touching the foam of the speaker cone though - it's just used around the cutout I made in the doorcard, to ensure the speaker had a good seal where it is mounted, so only the metal frame of the speaker comes into contact with it. I did that install about two years ago, and no issues yet.

Years ago I picked up an old pair of Jamo studio 170 floor standing speakers, sounded powerful but tweeters were dead. I had spares of identical spec and dropped them in. Still used to this day in my old Sony AV system that was the epitome of British white trash, but I was 18 when I bought it. The VFD is dead, and amongst the various issues it’s had, that’s the only thing I could never fix. Still sounds good though

    Those are pretty cool
I would be careful about the 60 watt rating that woofer magnet looks small

Oh, I'm sure the replacement woofers aren't rated nearly as much as the original. Maybe 10 watts. But I'll probably never push more than a watt through them :)

Funny wnough, you could get better bass response in some systems by wiring the woofers oit of phase. My Bowers & Wilkins DM-220s (definitely not low-fi) have the two 8 in midbass woofers wired out of phase. Though these do have proper crossover nwtworks, with inductors, capacitors and resisters for all three drivers. Now you could put some more batting on the internal walls of your cabinets to improve them a bit. As for those woofers? I'd use them for passive radiators in another project, lol.

Nice! Will you be doing a video about the “white trash hi-fi” anytime soon?

I've been meaning to do one for years. But I think now it would make better sense to make individual videos of components I haven't covered, which are the receiver, CD changer, and DAT deck.

Maybe they are original and they got a replacement cone and surround at some point. It looks to have a bit of an excessive amount of glue for the dustcap indicating that it might have been replaced. Usually when people would replace the entire woofer with something cheap it wouldn't even have any name or country of origin at all on the magnet

The other similar Claricon drivers I saw looked exactly the same. The original drivers wouldn't be Claricon-branded - they would have a 4-digit code on them and a bunch of information like the Tweeters have.
I've never heard of replacing the cone on a speaker, at least not on cheap-ish/small-ish speakers. Is that a real thing?

@@themaritimegirl I don't know if people who fix speakers would bother with cheap stuff today but years ago around 2003 or 2004 my dad had some old russian made spakers that would always get foam rot after 2-3 years. Since they were covered we didn't know they were rotted again and when the volume got up it killed them both because the surround was not there anymore. He took them to a repair shop and the guy put a new cone along with a new voice coil and put a rubber surround instead of the dreaded foam again and since then they are still working to this day without ever being serviced again. At that point the guy basically just reused the magnet and the metal body of the original speakers to make new ones because there was nothing left to save of the original speaker anymore

@@nushnume Interesting. Personally that seems like a ton of labor (and cost of such), versus just buying a whole new driver.
