  • Using pure butyl rubber solution from Vintage-AR to restore the cloth surrounds on the woofers of Realistic Optimus 1 speakers. It's the same "dope" that you should use on the original Acoustic Research and KLH speakers. I also show removal of the old surround dope with acetone and how to dilute the new dope with toluene as needed.

And through the magic of having two of them, "we're going back, Jack! Do it again!"

I like the Heathkit. As a matter of fact I am listening to your video through it's little brother, the AA 30. Its a stereo amp that uses EL84s. Always enjoy your programs.

Cool! Thanks! This is my first Heathkit, and my first EL34 amp.

I was told by a speaker repair guy that he uses plain old rubber cement, which u can thin if necessary?

Did you thin the material with acetone?

Over here in Spokane I can't find any toluene. Where did you locate that? BTW, I did a little research and found that once toluene evaporates it breaks down into harmless byproducts in a matter of minutes, typically. But you definitely don't want to inhale it, spill it on the ground etc.

It took some digging through search results to find it! I think I ended up ordering it from an aircraft supply in Houston, from where it was shipped on the ground all the way. I think it's used in de-icing.

Interesting... I "redoped" the surrounds on my KLH Model 20s many years with the dope from Vintage AR, but I don't remember removing any old dope. I thought the stuff just kinda disappeared over the years, as mine were just dry, soft, and light could be seen through them. Did these have incorrect dope applied to them at some time?
Ha, oh, nevermind. I commented before the video was finished.
