Hey man I know it was 7 years back, but have to ask. Just did my gasket on same engine 95. Can't help but to ask, is the black oil varnish on lifters and everywhere, and worse on left side, normal? Also, I have kind of a pulsing blowby when oil cap is off and engine on. It's not awful, but it definitely is there. The cam looks good, and engine runs good.

Yeah both are normal for these engines. Mine has a lot of blow by as well. As well as other Saturn's of this generation. The discoloration is a combination of varnishing and carbon build-up. As long as it's not excessive it's nothing to worry about. It's another side effect of those engines. They didn't have a very well balanced oil flow pattern and the dark areas are the areas that don't get as much flow and in turn run hotter.

@@ScanMan79 Lol that's good to know poor lubrication due to poor engineering 🤣. Well I've heard of 1.9s lasting past 400k so I'll just turn a blind eye to the visual aspect of the engine and just listen to if it's about to blow up lol. I must say it's the first car I've ever seen where the coolant temperature gauge fluctuates so drastically before the cooling fan kicks on leading me to almost believe the engine nearly overheats before the cooling fan kicks on. Another thing that's good for it I'm sure.

great video, what are you using to clean off the surfaces of the valve cover?

Hello! Thanks, I'm glad you liked the video. All I'm using is a non-chlorinated brake cleaner that I'm spraying onto the shop towel. It works really well for cutting the oils and grease on the surfaces so your new gasket will seal properly and not leak. Hope that helps. :)

Did you lube your gasket before putting it on? I'm about to do mine.

      No, I installed it dry.

Is the man speaking? Can't hear a word

He must be. Otherwise he would have annotated the video with text, right? No, seriously: yes he is speaking.
      Edit:
He's speaking to himself, mostly. He just uses the video to cover for the fact that he talks to himself if anybody sees him. It's OK, ScanMan79. Talking to yourself is normal and helps you keep focused when nobody is around and your head is filled with all those other competing voices saying things like, "No! Turn the screw the other way!" or "Don't use a ratchet for that! Just pull it off with pliers." or "You forgot to pour a quart of oil on the ground!"

2:00 Why are the three rear rocker arms a different color than the first five?
(cylinder four and half of cylinder three VS. cylinders one, two, and the other half of cylinder three)
Edit: Smart man. He uses a PLASTIC putty knife/scraper that won't gouge aluminum.
Edit 2: Very interesting. On the Amazon.com product page for the Fel-Pro gasket for this engine a customer posted an image of his engine while installing the gasket. The image has the same strange variance in rocker arms and they match the color and location of this video exactly! I must now take my valve cover off and se if my car is the same way. The picture on Amazon is:

The color variation is from the heat/oil distribution not being equal. The "golden" rockers are cleaner and lack the carbon build up that the blacker ones have. Pretty common on these, and there's really nothing you can do about it without re-engineering the oil flow/distribution of the entire top of the engine. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

@@ScanMan79 That's along the line of what I expected the correct explanation would be. Thank you for taking the time to reply!
