It wasn't as noticeable in the earlier stages of her career since her voice was in fresh form and her natural vocal ability allowed her to pick up the slack in technique and acquired skills that would have helped her out majorly in the future. This is a woman that openly refuses to receive formal vocal training, and also says that vocal warm-ups aren't necessary for her because she's "loud" and can just "power through."

The reason why Carrie's F#s were more powerful than her D-Fs is because the natural physiology of the human voice (and its corresponding limitations) forces her to temporarily disengage from the coordination that she's "trained" herself to use in the mid-belt region. As a lyric soprano, the C#5-Eb area is where she runs into the most issues with that second passaggio- that has always been her biggest problem. You can hear the "shift" in her voice and lack of consistency at that point, because she tries to stay locked into the same coordination that she uses on her earlier belts, but she simply can't maintain support when using that approach. That's why it becomes thin, reedy, and unpleasant. As you mentioned, the volume almost "disappeared" on D-Eb. It sounds constricted, like it's stuck in her throat. All because she's trying to fight off the natural shift that is supposed to happen at that point in her range. Notice how drastically different Morisette's approach is ... she starts lightening up and bringing in more of a mix much earlier on in her belting range. But in order to execute the F#5 the way it was in that particular song, Carrie had to adjust her coordination; At that point, it's getting too far away from the passaggio for her to be able to just make it without her voice cracking.
love both of them! morisette clearly has the ease in terms of range, but that doesnt necessarily mean that carrie isn't a great singer. carrie's sustained belts (breath control) and power are CRAZY. morisette is a pop soprano vocalist - gorgeous tone and resonance!

carrie underwood has been one of my favourite singers since she won american idle. Her rendition of how great thou art was spine tingling but when it comes to overall vocals, resonance, clarity, and the complete package nobody can compare to Morissette. (My opinion only mine you).

Whistle register means nothing. Most people are capable of accessing and developing that register, even lower-voiced males. The majority just don't do so, either because they don't want to, or simply just have the mindset that it's some impossible feat of which only an elite few are capable. What makes Morisette better than Carrie is her technique.
