"George W. told the nation, "This is not an escalation; This is just a surge toward victory. Just to win my little war, I'm sending 20,000 more, To help me save Iraq from Iraqis." The more things change, the more they remain the same, etc.
The feudal barons of the Middle Ages, the economic predecessors of the capitalists of our day, declared all wars. And their miserable serfs fought all the battles. The poor, ignorant serfs had been taught to revere their masters; to believe that when their masters declared war upon one another, it was their patriotic duty to fall upon one another and to cut one another’s throats for the profit and glory of the lords and barons who held them in contempt. And that is war in a nutshell. The master class has always declared the wars; the subject class has always fought the battles. The master class has had all to gain and nothing to lose, while the subject class has had nothing to gain and all to lose-especially their lives." - Eugene V. Debs
"George W told the nation This is not an escalation This is just a surge towards victory. Just to win my little war I'm sending twenty thousand more To help me save Iraq from Iraqis." The more things change the more they remain the same.
Excellent remake or update from his original LBJ song. I knew nothing about this until now. Tom was 70 when he did this. Very well done. Some are now saying that Biden will likely send a large number of troops to Taiwan to defend it against China. We can never resist getting involved in these foreign affairs or wars if it develops into that.
Jimmy Carter is the only president in my lifetime - I am 65 - who hasn't felt the need to go bomb someone somewhere for some reason. Does everybody remember how respected Jimmy Carter wasn't?
Ma La I think the problem is he was perceived as weak willed. I see him as a good guy in a position that requires a Machiavellian sense of ruthlessness
Not long after Amnesty International and Archbishop Oscar Romero pleaded with Carter to NOT send arms to the Salvadoran junta, Jimmy Carter did just that- sent more arms. Soon after, Romero was shot dead in front of his congregation.
OMG, thought I would split my sides. Except it's tragic that the song he wrote that involved LBJ and VietNam is still relevant today (I guess he could also have framed it around Afghanistan...)
eight years and two democratic presidential terms later, and we`re still in iraq, and just about to go into mosul with 560 new US troops. iraq war 1991-???? surely one of the biggest, worst military blunders in modern history.
@simoncowellscores I think you should have actually listened to some current generation music before you have an opinion about it... Do you even know who "Rage against the Machine" is? every song is politically charged. Eminem wrote a song stating vote against George bush in the next election. Wyclef John (whom is black), wrote a song with a lyric "If I was president, I'd be elected on friday, assassinated on saturday and burried on sunday" and NOFX wrote an album with a title Rock against Bush
Usually these songs don't work when recycled. Vietnam was a civil war and there was a draft. That doesn't mean I was for the Iraq war. I wasn't. I marched against with my family before he even invaded. But the song just doesn't work, sorry.

Any who qoutes Deb's is good in my book
This is sharp. The recycling alone conveys so much truth and meaning. Thanks Tom.
…I love those newly adapted lyrics here and there in the song. I was playing his records to death in the ‘60s; never once got to see him.
Country Joe did "Cakewalk to Baghdad" which is well worth a listen. Those who like this one, will like it.

Thank you for posting!!! Great song, with lots of truth-telling to boot!

LOVE it!
Thanks for sharing this intriguing song. It seems that the US has saved Afghanistan from Afghans as well
well it will continue to happen till this world ends
A great update of "Lyndon Johnson Told the Nation."
Tom Paxton - a favorite on my way to the Vietnam cluster fuck. Still a favorite truth teller!!!!

Jimmy Carter was the first president I voted for, and I'm still proud of it. He turned out to be a great man.
Jimmy Carter bombed Afghanistan and support dictator of Indonesia and pol pot (CIA agent) ad Israel
Carter was the best president since JFK. Better, actually.
Not long after Amnesty International and Archbishop Oscar Romero pleaded with Carter to NOT send arms to the Salvadoran junta, Jimmy Carter did just that- sent more arms.

I didn't know that Tom ever sang in Philadelphia PA.
Nice

LBJ, GWB, and now BHO have all followed the same template. And the rest weren't really much different either.
Oh if you only knew,
2017
I have no high hopes for DJT. And HRC would have been no improvement.
At least lbj improved the country, no matter how badly he fucked up vietnam, Bush, Obama, and now trump with is Syria bullshit have no excuse.
Что за бой кто знает?
truth bombs not roof bombs
(y)
trump launched cruise missile to rescue Syria from Syrians
Strongman move, a good war always boosts approval ratings.
If Hillary is elected we can add her name to the list of presidents who were "mad for War[s]"

@bochen88p You better hope you never need Americans to come and help you.

+ChrisCucinell I like it. I'm glad someone is still singing this stuff.
Sleepy Biden Told the Nation...
This is not an escalation
