Hurricane vs. Tornado: What's the difference?

  • What's the difference between a hurricane and a tornado?
I'm Storm Shield Meteorologist Jason Meyers.
They're both a testament to Mother Nature's fury.
They both spin counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere.
And they both cause loss of life and property every year.
But they're far from the same thing.
For one, they form in very different ways.
Hurricanes form in warm ocean waters.
Moisture evaporates, rises, and begins to circulate.
As the storm grows, winds continue to speed up, and eventually, an eye forms around the middle.
Tornadoes, on the other hand, spawn from thunderstorms.
Rotation in different layers of the atmosphere within a thunderstorm create a funnel cloud that eventually reaches the ground.
Neither one of these processes are necessarily superior than the other, so this is a wash.
BUT - something we can compare: size.
Hurricanes can be hundreds of miles in diameter.
The biggest tornado ever recorded had a damage path of a little more than two and a half miles, but most are only three to four hundred yards.
In fact, tornadoes have been known to spawn INSIDE a hurricane!
    Advantage - hurricane.
Now to round 2 - what about wind speed?
Hurricanes may be bigger, but tornadoes still pack a punch for their size.
Hurricane force winds range from 74 mph for a weak storm all the way up to 157 mph or more for a catastrophic category five.
A weak tornado starts out with winds around 40 mph, but an EF5 tornado has winds anywhere between 261 to 318 mph, much stronger than the strongest hurricane force winds.
Point goes to tornadoes - tie ball game.
Next round - what does more damage?
Tornadoes do all their damage using those extremely strong rotating winds.
Hurricanes, however, come with a triple threat.
They use strong winds, heavy rains, and storm surge - bringing huge waves crashing on shore, causing more flooding.
But even so, tornado and hurricane activity vary from year to year, but study after study has shown that on average, they are both equally damaging and deadly.
    This one's a draw.
On to round 4 - who lasts longer?
Hurricanes last from a few hours to a few weeks, and the average falls somewhere in between.
Tornadoes are on the ground anywhere between a few seconds to maybe a few hours for a particularly strong storm, but the average is somewhere between two and fifteen minutes.
    Hurricanes go the distance.
And this plays into warning time.
Since hurricanes take so long to form and do a lot of traveling before reaching land, people usually have plenty of notice to take cover or evacuate.
Watches are typically issued two days ahead of time, and warnings are usually issued 36 hours before anything happens.
    Tornadoes are completely different.
Watches are sometimes issued an hour or two ahead of time, and the average warning time for a tornado warning is 13 minutes - just enough time to get to a safe place.
Tornadoes are definitely scarier for this reason.
And now we've ended up with a tie, and it's settled.
Neither of these storms are to be messed with.

I'm from New Orleans and now live in Houston, so I've been through my fair share of hurricanes. Like Jason Meyers said, you have plenty of time to evacuate if you want to, and I live in an area that doesn't flood. Hurricanes aren't fun, but tornadoes scaaaaaary! They pop out of nowhere and can rip your house apart and turn it into a pile of rubble.

    • @bmd4534
      @bmd4534 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

+Flashingoutdark I was not. I already lived in Houston at the time. We had a bunch of people evacuate and stay with us in Houston for Katrina. We went back right after to assess the damage. It was chaotic. Lawlessness. It wasn't the winds that did so much damage... it was the flooding from the levees breaking. The levees were not up to par. All of that flooding should never have happened.
I've been through Hurricane Ike here in Houston. We rode that one out. It was a little scary, but not too bad. The thing that sucked about that is that we didn't have power for 2 weeks. Like most people, we didn't have a generator, and it was in August I believe here in Texas. So it was HOT. We had to put all of our refrigerated food in ice chests and get ice every day and do our best to keep cool. That heat was not fun. Especially trying to sleep at night.

Hurricanes carry tornadoes too though... Hurricanes have tornadoes, wind, storm surge, heavy rain and they cover a larger area. I went through Hurricane Irma last year, and we had a bunch of tornado warnings, one of which reported a large and extremely dangerous tornado very close to where I live, which scared the living crap out of me. So of course I believe hurricanes are way worse than tornadoes alone. Hurricanes can also have winds that go up to 200+ mph and have wind gusts even higher than that (look at hurricane Patricia for example... 215 mph sustained winds, and 235 mph wind gusts). The only thing scarier about tornadoes to me is, like you said, the amount of time to prepare.

I didn’t have to “prepare” per say, just pre prep your safe bunker, it should always be prepped anyway, and get in. However…a hurricane, you don’t get to do that. You have to board up your windows, and if you’re just coming back from a trip (my case) then you’re screwed. You have what ever you have at your house, and depending on when you arrived, you won’t be permitted to leave, and no one will help you because they would have evacuated by then. (Also my case)
Flooding was terrible, my house was destroyed, and I had no food for days. Even worse, we’re my cousins. They lived by the beach and I will never ever ever forget the picture they sent me of that sight. It looked like Hell.

Tornadoes form in the Philippines but are weak compared to those in the US specifically in the Midwest.

I don't buy into the just as damaging fact, the costliest tornado ever is like 6 billion I think while the costliest hurricane is 108 billion. Also tornadoes usually do several hundred million in damage per season. That's how much a weak hurricane or tropical storm does, so 3-2 hurricane wins

There is one other thing i will give the Tornadoes an edge on. Tornadoes can form pretty much anywhere should the climate meet it's needs. Hurricanes effect generally the same places, sometimes storms can be so wide that it might give further regions a good storm or downpour. Sometimes up here in Canada we get bad weather depending on how bad the Hurricanes are, but we don't get hit nearly as hard as the coast. However we do run a risk of Tornadoes touching down. And last year in 2021 we had quite a few Tornado Spikes in Ontario. Tornadoes always scared me more then hurricanes did. When i was a kid hurricanes scared me until i found out it's usually the coast that gets hit the hardest. We're I'm at we don't worry about hurricanes, but we do need to worry about Tornadoes should a storm be on approach. But I'd rather not be in either one of these storms. I would love to see a Tornado but never want to be in one, i don't think you can see a Hurricane unless your above it.

  • @jiezel91
    @jiezel91 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

If I may add, we should also consider the aftermath... Yup, tornadoes are scary due to their nature of forming and causing damage within a span of minutes.
But when we talk about aftermath, it's a totally different story...
Having lived in an area hit by several Cat 5 Typhoons (Hurricanes in Asia), dealing with a typhoon aftermath can be devastating.
    - No power for a month (sometimes more!)
    - Lack of potable water
    - Almost non-existent mobile signal
    - Near-empty grocery store commodities (due to disruptions in supply chain)
    - Limited gasoline stations operating
I can tell you, Cat 5 hurricanes can be very debilitating to go through. Trust me. You'll never realize this until you are severely hit by a Cat 5. You survived Cat 5 winds? Congratulations! But then here comes the aftermath, you'd be battling for survival until things normalize. The aftermath can be more devastating than the wind speeds itself.

Mistake at 0:07! Coriolis force affects only hurricanes, not tornadoes. Hurricanes do spin counter-clockwise on the northern hemisphere due to Coriolis effect, however the scales of tornadoes are too small to be affected by Coriolis force.

The thing is though Hurricanes can be predicted and can be somewhat accurately shown to hit a certain area. This gives the area of danger at least hours or days to prepare for danger. But tornadoes are a hell to track and predict. They can basically appear out of nowhere and change paths in an instant. I'm not saying that one is deadlier than the other, but for those confused why tornadoes are a lethal threat this is why.
    Great video though :)

We get lots of tropical storms and even hurricanes here in Florida, it's really quite terrifying. The last one I remember having (it was in 2005 and I was very little, so I don't remember the name) was a particularly nasty one. Our power went out and or septic tank overflowed. We all hid in our mom's closet until the eye of the storm. My dad and I went outside to see the damage and the shingles on our roof were all in the pool, trees were torn out of the ground, and our trampoline was in pieces and scattered about the yard. Was not a pleasant experience.

I think tornados are much worse than hurricane I mean a hurricane is very strong but a tornado is way more scarier and powerful

    • @aymericst-louis-gabriel8314
      @aymericst-louis-gabriel8314 6 ปีที่แล้ว

For having lived in areas that have both.
      I'd take a tornado over a hurricane.
The worst about tornadoes is the very short warning time. The surprise element is what gets them kills.
Hurricanes are like huge tornadoes (albeit on the weaker side) with rain and flooding.

I love in north eastern Oklahoma where tornados happen almost any time there's a thunder storm. There's a tornado watch like 2 times a week depending on what time of the year it is. But a warning ( where you have to evacuate or take cover) happens 1 every 2-3 weeks. Once there was an F-4 tornado about 30 minutes from my house. 3 days after we drove through that town to get to a football game and telephone poles where thrown into the trees. 95 percent of the buildings were either demolished or heavily destructed. Cars were flipped. Trees were snapped and pieces were caught in the telephone wires. The roads were obviously cleared by tractors and stuff but. The whole town was destroyed. There's also a lot of earth quakes where I live. There once was a 6.2 earthquake that mocked our tv off the wall, almost shook ceiling fans off the ceiling, and cracked out upstairs ceiling. It woke me up at about 6:00 am, Nearly shaking my mattress or the bed frame.

I love hurricanes, category 1s and category 2s are so much fun to just experience. Any more and it gets a bit scary.
Tornadoes are not scary either unless you can see it.
I love the rain and thunder. I would prefer it was always stormy outside, that’s ideal weather.
