When I was a kid, I remember going on a cruise in the Ionian Sea with my family. At some point the vessel stopped in the open and we took a swim (it was a private yacht and we were around 10 people only). It was nowhere near as deep as the Marianna Trench obviously, but given that the Ionian Sea has the deepest point in the Mediterranean (the Calypso Deep), I would say where we swam must have been at least 1km/3200 feet deep below. I remember looking down and not being able to see the bottom, scariest experience of my life lol.
I think I would faint if I was in the open ocean. I also have a phobia for heights. So looking down and seeing nothing but black and no sea floor below you and the floor is about 2 miles below your feet of ocean. I have gone on so many cruise ships and on days at sea, I always had the mindset of, “What would happen to me if I fell off the ship?” The open ocean at night was more terrifying. You can’t see anything out in the middle of the open ocean at night without the moon in the sky, it’s pitch black and worse, you can’t see what’s happening out there. I don’t know how I managed to be on cruises, and airplanes. Whenever the activity was us snorkeling in 20 ft of coastal water, I never would go in the water. I did one time and I couldn’t see the bottom it looked about 50 feet below me, and it was semi murky. I think that was the scariest experience ever. Some people out in the world are so crazy to even scuba dive near the ocean drop off aka go wall diving. Basically where the ocean floor drops straight down to 2 miles and starts the end of shallow coral reefs of the coastal ocean floor to where the open ocean drop off begins. What’s scary about that kind of diving is that if you’re not careful and not know the places you dive, you could be pulled down into the ocean’s abyss by a strong down current. 95% of our ocean is unexplored and only 14% of the oceans animals are known to us. The rest are in the deep parts of the ocean.
