The biggest kidney stone on record weighed more than a kilogram and was 17 centimeters in diameter. The patient didn’t actually swallow a stone the size of a coconut; kidney stones form inside the body. So how do they grow in the first place? And why are they so painful to get out? Arash Shadman shares the science behind kidney stones.

I had a 6 mm stone. I can definitely say it was the worst pain I've ever experienced. I woke up at 3 am on January 2nd, 2020 and it was so awful that I was shaking and vomiting. Then I spent a long morning in the emergency room so they could give me fluids, pain meds, and diagnose the problem. It took two surgeries to get rid of the stone, and was an incredibly emotionally and physically taxing month. Needless to say I've increased my water intake a lot since then because I really want to avoid going through it again.

@veenu thomas Probably depends on the kind of stone you're dealing with and how old you are. In some cases I think doctors will recommend diet changes, and of course, a increase in water intake is helpful. But you'll probably need to talk to your doctor about strategies specific to your situation.

My urologist and I made an ultimatum that I would pass the stone in the next several days or they would fish it out. Luckily, it passed the next day, so I avoided the surgery.

My cat actually passed a kidney stone awhile ago, and it was the most horrifying thing I’ve ever witnessed. She was bleeding and running around wailing with horrible pain. I felt so bad for her, and we took her to the vet ASAP. I was afraid she was going to die because of the blood I saw, but the vet said she had passed a stone and I was so relieved that she would be ok. I’m so glad she’s doing better now and I always double check now to make sure her water bowl is extra full. I hope anyone else who is going through that experience themselves makes it out ok ❤️

I've had kidney stone crisis since I was 18. That means going to the ER, cause the pain is unbearable. And now I am learning that potato chips are one of the causes. This is so true cause this is the only junk food I've been addicted to all my life. Now I know why I get those stones, cause drinking a lot of water every day is something I've always done. So don't eat potato chips, that would be my advice. I'll try to, no choice.

@@fintech1378 As another 18 year old who just had their first stone, the pain wakes you up in the middle of the night with no warning. And the more you move, the more intense the pain gets.
A hot shower definitely makes it hurt less but after half an hour the pain comes back even in the shower, you have to go to the ER (especially if, like in my case, trying to swallow painkillers makes you vomit them out immediately. At that point you need an IV)

I had sepsis with one, that was the worst (esp since the idiot radiologist missed the stone in my ureter on my initial arrival to teh hosp-and after 3 days of high fever and misery, the urologist was called and he found teh stone on the SAME SCAN...I was pissed...) The on issue is getting enough pain meds, since the US govt is waging a war on acess to proper pain control. One med they commonly forget, but that helps alot, is pyridium-which numbs the urinary tract-great stuff but you have to ask for it sometimes.

But after my kidney stone I now COMPLETELY understand how someone is capable of waiting death than to suffer intense pain. I now know it is truly possible to be in a situation where death is more preferable to the level of suffering one is going through. The pain is so epically saturating that you lose complete control of your existence and fall the all consuming force that give you no other choice.

Just released from the hospital. Had a 5mm stone lodged in my ureter. It would not pass. Was in the ER from 330am-530pm. Had one moment of nausea and threw up. Had an MRI done to show the stone and location. At 530pm was taken to surgery center where I waited until 10pm. During my time waiting I was given pain meds every 1.5 hours because they would wear out that quick.. They gave me a local anesthetic with a tube down my throat and a camera and "grabber" with a basket up my urethra via a catheter to remove the entire stone. Woke up the next day and urinated out blood clots and no amount of IV or oral pain meds did nothing to relieve the pain in my member. I would drink alot of water with alot of lemon juice. I would wait until I couldn't hold it anymore for a quick and powerful release to make sure I wasn't retaining and urine in the bladder. The first three times I went was excruciating. Never had so much pain and tears in my life. The next few times it stung but it resembled urine more than blood. That one day felt like two full days. The third day I was released. That afternoon and night, my neck, chest, belly, and sides were very sore and stiff. Mainly because I was off IV fluids.. Today is my fourth day after experiencing the initial pain and being in the ER. Not as sore, urinating with no pain, and radically cutting out refined sugars and simple carbohydrates. Ive never smoked, don't drink alcohol, haven't drank soda in about 15 years and drink 90 ounces of water 5 days a week during work. Going to see my doctor in a week to see the results of the stone analyzation and have a specific reason for it and what dietary changes I need to make.

Humans didn't have kidney stones until very recently. You know why? Because people either didn't eat vegetables or at least didn't eat it raw, ever. It's not going to go away because of some medical advancement but by people understanding things beyond the big-agro-industry propaganda. Vegetables have no significant nutrition, and even when they do, they are not bio-available to humans. Compare nutrition data from vegetables to same amount of meat and milk products and you'll see what I mean.
Also, doctors want more kidney stones so they'll never recommend the proper solution, only the treatments.

I was in urgent care yesterday after 5 days of vomiting & pain, the pain was unbearable, it also came & went, the pain woke me up and there was no comfortable position I could get in…a CT scan revealed the kidney stone, I never had a kidney stone before and I hope I never do again….go to urgent care now if your in pain, don’t wait! The doctor said dehydration can cause it, drink water 💦 I was trying to work and would have to lay down the pain was so bad!

To think that out of all living things humans are gods chosen ones (favorite experiments) and it cares about you. Dinosaurs were the real one's in-charge for hundreds of millions of years, we were just lucky that we didn't have to deal with them. There were hardly even any mammals during that time. We have been around for just hundred thousand years and some of us are already so full of themselves, thinking everything was created just for us. Supernatural powers care about us. Hilarious!
