Cancer is an extremely difficult disease, and the only hope we have to cure it is to understand it. If you'd like to get up to speed on where we are in this journey, the book we recommend at the end of this video is a great place to start. You can download a free audiobook at adbl.co/2gauxND. TED-Ed A question I ask myseld for some time now: Why does not everyone get checked every few years if there are any cancerous cells in their body? Is it not detectable so easily? Would it be harmful to test? Is it too expensive? Hope someone can answer this :)
Languste You should be getting checked yearly. If you are over 50, you should be getting checked every six months. Most cancer IS detectable early and MUCH easier to cure if detected early. It is not harmful to test for it and most tests are not expensive. Ask your doctor.
Peter Cohen Didn't know that, thanks for the fast answer :) What I should have told is that I am only 17 and not in a very high risk to get cancer; nonetheless, getting checked regularly would not be bad :P When will this testing start? At what age?
Languste As a general rule, you should get a checkup every year, regardless of youth, and then increase that as you age. Even young people can get sick, and it sucks even more to die of cancer or something when you are young. We older folks have at least had some extra time with life. A young person with cancer, diagnosed early, is VERY unlikely to die from it. Ignore it for a few years however (you might not even know without a checkup), and it could kill you.

@@jasonbrody1619 Wrong, cancer isn't like the plague, cancer is more like the flu. It always reoccurs in a person just like the flu does. So even if we cure cancer, it will never be something of the past.
I had a dog named Luckie, he lived with us for 7 years and almost made it to 8 years but he started getting sick and that's when he caught cancer which was incurable and started getting worse over time. We had to put him down because we didn't want to see him rot to death. I've never cried so hard over a loss like this in my life because he was my best friend. I bursted into tears as soon as I saw him stop moving. Luckie if you can hear me, I love you and miss you, I wish I could get you back but your gone. R.I.P Luckie.

Short answer: it's because cancer isn't a disease caused by bacteria and virus but a group of mutated cells hurting the body. It can happen literally anytime but certain things increase the chances.
For example certain things are: the sun, Smoking Zigarettes, drinking Alkohol, Most illegal dr*gs, to much pork/cow and other types of meat. The World is quite toxic to us humans.
My Genetics professor once said "Cancer is a cell that is trying to become immortal". That slogan has stuck with me ever since because it is very true. It's what makes curing cancer so difficult.
cancer is like lesser advance organism than humans with the same motto to increase life span..."Cancer is a cell that is trying to become immortal" that is really well said
There are two problems that cancer inherently has, which unfortunately will never or only rarely be adequately adressed: 1. Cancer cells are human cells. Albeit cancer cells majorly disrupt organ function by invasion and kill you in the end, Cancer cells are VERY similar to normal organ cells - in fact genome-wide only a handful of genes in the total of multiple of thousands of genes are mutated. This is why the immune system by far cannot as easily detect cancer cells as it can e.g. detect bacteria. And here for the same reason treatment as well will never be able to precisely kill a cancer cell as well as e.g. antibiotics do with bacteria - generally speaking of course, there are singular exceptions. 2. Darwinistic Selection applies to everything reproducing - humans, animals as well as bacteria (-> antibiotic resistance), viruses and cancer cells. In chemotherapeutic cancer treatment it is not about the singular tumor mass but about every single cell on its own. They reproduce and by reproducing they as well mutate due to a concept in living organisms called 'fault tolerance'. So whatever treatment you apply - be it the standard chemo therapy targeting highly mitotic cells or the 500k$ chimeric antigen receptor T-Cell therapy - in the billions of cancer cells making up the e.g. 3cm large tumor mass in your lung one cell will spontaneously mutate and gain a resistance towards your treatment. For example one lung cancer cell will by chance have a mutation in one of its efflux channels which changes it in a way that the chemotherapeutic agent will be kept from the cell or concerning CARTCT the tumor antigen (at the moment CD19) mutates and the CARTC cannot bind anymore. To circumvent this , a 99.99999% elimination rate is not enough - it has to be explicitly 100%, something only surgery in an early localized stage with a wide safety margin may accomplish.
Cancer truly does tear people apart. My Nanna, 2 of my great aunts, my uncle and my aunt have all passed away from types of cancer. They were healthy. I only know of one family member (another aunt) who has actually survived the horrors of cancer. I truely hope one day people won't feel the pain of their loved ones being incredibly hurt and tormented by cancer and instead they can be healed and continue to live their lives. ❤
if cancer is so common in your family, it is highly recommended to do genetic testing :) my boyfriend's father died of cancer a year ago, during treatment they discovered certain gene mutations in him - Lynch syndrome. These mutations can be hereditary, they are passed on to 50% of the offspring, so genetic testing was recommended
I lost my father to cancer last July. I really wish we can find the cure so that the pain I've felt wont be felt by anyone who's had loved ones die from cancer.
I really know how does it feels like ... i feel so sorry .. i know it was really difficult how to keep spirit or optimistic but i realize that they free from suffer painfully and it makes me peacefully
I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia last year in my junior year of highschool. It was quite hard feeling like I had the stomach flu all the time and having severe fatigue. But I'm thankful I got leukemia to be honest it made me more thankful for life, more positive and overall a much better person. I'm going to try to become a researcher and put my all into finding a cure for this horrible disease so no one else has to suffer or question whether they are going to die or not like I and many others have.
Hey there! I pray for your speedy recovery 🙏🥺my cousin brother is also diagnosed with ALL there hasn't been a day i wasn't worried.. Where are you from and can you please tell me your progress 🙏
I don’t want to give you false hope but I know an old person with the same illness who is still living a healthy happy life. Since you’re young your chances are even higher if you follow treatments. Best of luck to you.
Cancer is not hard to cure, rather they dont want to or they will lose profit which is estimated to be $150,000 per person in the US, so dont be fooled by the media trying to make it sound like they’re the victim.
I hope science could find better ways to cure cancer, with low side effect. Recently I just lost someone that's really close to me, she had bone cancer. But she also had PTSD, schizophrenia, and diabetes. Which is I believe make things worse for her, physically and mentally. She passed away 1 week after her first chemotherapy. Well, one thing I can say, at least now she can rest in peace. And for every cancer fighter out there, I am praying for all of you (just like everybody else who loves you). So please stay strong and don't give up!
Sure science had found a way. But science can release the cure to the public are you crazy???? Why on earth would people wanna cure cancer, cancer is a billion dollar industry which is the main source of income for pharma& medical industry, from loan sharks to Banks. if the cure for cancer is released, who would be willing to borrow money piling up ridiculous amount of debt????
I am in high school right now and we were given an assignment where we had to talk about a disease and that's why I am here. I chose cancer because my dad passed away due to it. It's been almost two years. He had kidney cancer and we only got to know of it when it reached stage 4 so it was nearly impossible to cure it. Anyways I just wanna say that if you or any one of your relatives may be suffering from it too I pray for you guys because I truly care. I hope things go back to normal as soon as possible. All my best wishes. edit: thanks to everyone who's replying with pretty words y'all are really nice and again if anyone is going through a close person's loss or has people in their life battling cancer I hope it gets better for you all.
Wow, as a doctor, I must admit that this video is better than me in explaining what is cancer to someone who did not go to medical school. The points in this video are spot on. Good job TedEd.
My grandma had a stomach cancer, but fortunately, thanks to the doctors, she won. She has some health troubles now, but they are not dangerous for her life. I am happy that I live in time when we have a chance to cure cancer.
But only cure it for a price. Anything that not profitable will not be properly investigated, This is fact. And chemo does endanger lives with the damage it does to the body.
I lost my father from stomach cancer! It was an advance stage 3 disease. We fought for 6 months with him, until one day he just stopped talking after he came from 2nd dialisis - I hope one day we find cure for this! I hope nobody goes through what my family went through
I'm so sorry that's u went through this my grandad has been battling cancer for 3 years it came back recently and this time its stronger and hes infected all over his body and it's still rapidly increasing. I was told yesterday that he has a week left and it was heart breaking telling my mum. This comment made me feel a bit luckier cuz even though we cant see him on his last days because we cant bring him here cuz hes to sick and we cant go see him cuz of coronavirus we atleast got 3 years with him and a warning

Which organ cancer u fight ??? Which stage ?? Can u give me little information bcz my father is suffering from stage 4 stomach cancer and I am really worried ..
Im 20, and was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Still undergoing chemotherapy, but under a higher dose since ABVD isn’t that completely effective with my case. I hope research into the cure for different types of cancer get more support and fund so that no more people get to experience the things I went through. We’ll beat this cancer soon, hopefully!
Honestly, I had no idea that Cancer was such a complex organism. I literally thought it was a cluster of bad cells that just.. Poisoned things. The fact that they actually do all that stuff is scary.
Right? It's like every single one of their characteristic is that of a sci-fi movie alien race who simply exist to destroy absolutely everything with no mercy whatsoever.

My mom, a 2nd grade teacher for 40+ years, came home to hospice care on Monday because of Stage IV B Uterine cancer. She was in complete remission last December. She is full of spirit, but she is bedridden b/c her fight left her legs with Lymphedema causing them to be so heavy she cannot walk. Sadly, treatment is not an option b/c she cannot walk and is considered too weak. The hardship on me and my family is great. The burden she has been carrying is even greater. It pains me to think that her spirit may be extinguished and someone that brought a lot of joy and love into this world will soon be gone. I pray every night asking that she be given a miracle so she could walk again and get the treatment she needs to survive a couple more years. And everyday, I stay hopeful. I understand Cancer is part of nature and balance BUT I hope one day we can slow it down. My mom turns 77 on July 18th.
My dad just recently died from a stage 4 lung cancer. And my dad was very healthy too. His cancer really took a toll on him and severely damaged his body. First of all, sorry about your loss. I can totally understand how much your dad would've meant to you, because my father means to me a lot. My father got stage one squamous carcinoma, and fortunately he will be healed.
My father too had oral cancer, it was stage two and wasn’t lethal but i could see how painful the treatments were, his face changed forever and the radiotherapy is the most painful therapy out of all. Cancer and it’s treatments are really painful and not to mention the loss of life or the irreversible changes that occur in your life. Cancer’s never ever good. Rest in peace to your dad 🪦
I lost one of my 8th grade teachers to cancer and we all mourned the loss of her. This video did help me lift my spirits and I pray to all the people who lost someone to cancer. God bless everyone.
my mother was diagnosed with cancer in her ovary, fortunately it was an early stage and the doctor did the surgery, she has recovered now, but it still put me and my family into huge stress and worry when we think about it, I worry that someday it will return and she might not be around. be nice and pay good amount of attention to the people you love, sometimes the worst kind of cancer is not the ones that grow on your body, but instead the one that grow on the people you love dearly.
My father is in his final days, he's has been fighting against his cancer since it was detected in his bowel in 2018, he had an operation to remove it which it did but it was then detected in his liver he again had it removed which was also successfully. Then it was detected in his lungs which was incurable. Now it's in his brain. since Christmas 2021 to now he has gone blind on his left side and has lost his appetite meaning he has dropped to about 60kg he is now just starving to death. My father has had over 30 rounds of chemo tried different experimental chemotherapy but ultimately the cancer has won.
Canser also loses because canser feeds on your good cell and makes it bad, if you die your cells does too and if it did the canser dies too its a draw no one wins both loses
Cancer killed my favorite aunt, close cousin, and best friend. All were in their 40s. It’s a cruel thing to see someone wither away until they are unrecognizable.
@@ValentinDinca that's not the point of this comment and yes you're right but this is just a theoretical look into the future no need to pull out your research paper

I lost a loved one from lung cancer. He was seen on his last days that just so happened to be my birthday. He gave me 1 fist bump and I never saw him again
Sorry. Has to do with immune system. What you wrote can play a part, but Everyone is suseptible. The immune system stays in check by amino acids, hormones, well, could go on and on. Total health upkeep is most important,or we stand a chance of "breaking the chain" of proper cell grow and ridance. I'm just a long time survivor that only did the healthy life"half way". Stay healthy !
Yep just get rid of animal products and you will be cancer free! I had melanoma and then went vegan and in about 2 weeks it went away! Now I am still vegan and cancer free.
@@midnightmusic1087 not true. Once you get cancer,it is in your blood and throughout your body. It can and does go dormant. This is called"in remission". If you were told by a doctor after testing posative that you had cancer, you still have it. Don't kid yourself. We all live with carcenogens in our blood that are killed off by our immune system. I am a 3time survivor of cancer. Having it is a very harsh reality. I have never known a cancer survivor that has not tried to"wish it away",but we all go there to that world of wishes. Perhaps one day it will be cureable. I mean completely,no dormant cells waiting for a life event,or stress,or bad eating and exercise habits. I wish you a long life! Live long, love life enough to stay in it!!
Also there will never be a “cure” because the greedy pharmaceutical companies wouldn’t’ make money if they have people take pill and they are cured. People make more money if they keep people barely alive with the drug to make more money. Basically pay to keep living.
I am a blood cancer survivor 😊 I was 8 when I got the cancer and it became fatal to the fatality rate of 80% when it was detected and my treatment started. Yes it was damn painful and most wouldn't be able to listen to what all happened during the treatment but the fact is that I am alive😊

One of my distant relatives died from lung cancer a few years ago. Even though I didn’t really know them that well it really frustrates me that he was completely healthy and so young. We will find a cure for it. Sending love to everyone who is suffering or have family suffering from this horrible disease.
It's obvious some people with cancer are being enslaved to the antiviral and other supplementary Orthodox medicine just to help suppress the problem and not a cure. I have been with the cancer since 2018 until I was cured of cancer after using DR RORPOPOR herbal on TH-cam herbal Medicine. Contact him💯
They don't want to find a cure for it. Big Pharma and Treatment Centers don't want a cure... There is no $$$ Motivation to find a cure. These people are all tools of the system.

May be trying to put host in a better position. Consider every part of our body is cancerous and still functional. Wont it increase the odd of survival in this ever increasing pollution environment?
Thank you for your eximious showcase of eruditeness. I hereby revise: Cancer is like a level-99 boss of nature, totally overpowered and ultimately deadly.
People tend to think about cancer the wrong way. Cancer can't really be "cured" in the same way that other diseases like bacterial or viral infections can. Cancer can really only be treated once it appears, and the risks for it can be mitigated before it appears. The issue with cancer is that it is largely a product of the natural processes of the body. Those processes can be accelerated or exacerbated by exposure to carcinogenic factors, but even if you completely avoid all risk factors, there's *still* a chance of cancer forming at some point in your life. Every time a cell divides, there are approximately 3 genetic mutations that make it past the DNA proofreading system. That doesn't sound bad when you consider that the human genome is 3 billion base pairs long, but you have a lot of cells that divide fairly frequently, and things add up over decades. That's why cancer becomes more likely the older you get. As I said, it's a product of the natural processes of the body. Cancer is caused by a whole host of genetic mutations, not just one or two. Cells have quite a few defense mechanisms against cancer, as well as controls that prevent endless proliferation, invasion of other tissues, etc. All of those need to be disabled or altered in order for a cell to truly become cancerous. The problem is that those mutations are cumulative, meaning that even if you get treatment that successfully kills every single cancer cell in the body, there are still hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of cells that have many of those mutations, just waiting for the last one or two genetic changes necessary to turn into cancer again. That's why people can go into remission for years, only to have the cancer pop back up again. Every single treatment for cancer has drawbacks because they're trying to destroy the body's cells. They're broken, mutated cells, yes, but they are still the body's cells in essence. "Chemotherapy" is any of a number of drugs designed to affect cells that have the hallmarks of cancer, namely cells that are dividing out of control. That means that any healthy cells in the body that divide rapidly tend to also be affected, which is what makes chemo so unpleasant. The cells in hair follicles and the skin are impacted, which causes the skin to become thinner and hair to fall out and stop growing. The cells lining the digestive tract also divide a lot, which is why chemo can cause things like severe nausea, diarrhea, and poor nutrient absorption. The immune cells that fight infections also proliferate extremely quickly when a pathogen is detected. Chemo inhibits that, weakening the immune response and increasing the risk of infection and disease. Radiation destroys cancer by damaging its DNA to the point where the cells become nonfunctional. As targeted as it is, surrounding healthy tissue is still caught up in the treatment and is damaged and destroyed. Immunotherapy is the process of training the immune system to attack cancer cells. The problem is that if the immune system becomes overly sensitive to cells marked as "self" it can cause autoimmunity. Fully 20-30% of patients being treated with immunotherapy develop some sort of autoimmune response that damages healthy tissues. Overall, cancer is so difficult to treat because of the nature of what it is and how it forms. A lot of people think that cancer "cures" are being suppressed because it makes various parties more money to just use the current treatments and have the cancer come back again and again. That couldn't be further from the truth. First off, the majority of cancer research is done by scientists working at universities or non-profit labs funded by cancer charities. If they found some sort of magic bullet that would immediately clear a person's cancer, even if the patent was bought up by some pharmaceutical company, the research itself would still be in the literature, so the world would know about it. It's the same with people who think the secret behind unlimited, free energy has been found and is just being suppressed by oil companies, despite being physically impossible. It's just conspiracy theories. There are thousands of researchers pouring their hearts and souls into this, and if anything of note is discovered, it will be disseminated in the literature almost immediately.

I certainly don’t believe the numbers have dropped in morality rates. Everyone I’ve known that had cancer, put it in remission for so long before coming back and taking over. Also, the cost to treat cancer is unfortunately very costly.
My grandpa passed away due to lung cancer in july 2019, i wish everyone suffering from any type of cancer a quick recovery and a long life, i hope everyone who lost their loved ones due to cancer are doing well and living their life to the fullest, stay safe ♡
A terrific video! The animation reminded me of the very first cartoon I saw about cancer by in the 1950. Where the body was shown with seven factories (I think), and cancer relentless attacked each one. And the cancer was a multi-arm octopus like thing, almost just like this one, a similar but more primitive version. I had nightmares as a child after watching that first video. To my mind, the context is the cellular nature of our beings and exquisite coordination that required to keep a “hive of cells” functioning as being, which sets the stage for mistakes and stem cells.
Why do diseases like this exist, it makes me depressed 🙁 Why why why just why Cancer research, please don’t give up Congrats to the survivors Do well for the fighters And miss the warriors who died in battle Please like to give good luck to all people and my dad who are going through this edit: thanks for the likes, i have never had as many likes as this, i appreciate the feedback aswell :-) stay strong! #dontgiveindontgiveup
Cuz everything needs to have a balance...human won against their predators but if they don't die earth will get soon bombarded with humans and it will not be enough for everyone to survive....
You will find many smokers who never get lung cancer, on the other hand some non smokers who also get lung cancer. Nevertheless, there is a lot of research ongoing on the subject and we hope we can find a cure soon. Great Video. Helps give a real insight on cancer - something that unfortunately affects almost everyones life nowadays, on some level or the other.
Its really easy to pin things on genetics. Unfortunately, The practicality of the disease is not convincing for someone who faces the brutality of cancer.
I heard one person say that the reason why some smokers don't get lung cancer is because they keep killing the cancer cells with the cigarette smoke that caused them from before. For all we know, the they're giving their own lung tumors cancer.
H MN it's more like epigenetics, if you want cancer to grow give it the proper environment. If you don't want it to grow take away its environment. From ph levels to excess animal protein levels to not giving your body the proper nutrients it needs to fight disease or to heal itself all play a vital role. Everyday everyone is fighting cancer some people just give cancer a more "comfortable" home than others.
Bipolar Inorder many people know this. But you know what is even worse. Denial. People refuse to believe that they can get sick. Or get cancer. So they always suggest these things to be done by someone else. But it doesn’t apply to them. Any thoughts on how we can change that attitude ?
@Spitty Oofer I don’t know much, but I’m pretty sure cancer has been around since humans existed, thousands of years ago. According to the ACS (American Cancer Society), the first descriptions of cancer were found in Egyptian writings in 3000bc. Another thing is that scientists have found proof cancer existing in animals 250million years ago. I may be wrong but I’m pretty sure it’s not a virus or bacteria, just a mutation of cells in one’s body.
@@spittyoofer A theory I heard is that it actually did. Because from a pure biological standpoint, the reason why we evolve is so we survive longer and most importantly can have more children, i.e. continue our species. Our body has countless ways to repair, detect, and destroy cancerous genetical material, but its never 100% perfect. At SOME point, one cancerous cell will slip through, and you will have cancer. But thanks to our protection against it, most of the time it's late in our lives, in one we often already have multiple children to continue the human race. So from an evolutionary standpoint, it would be wasteful to get even better protection from cancer, since it is already more than enough to be not seriously harmful to the species survival.
I had biology in High School, so before watching this video i thought that i knew all the basic knowledge about what cancer is.... But i was so wrong. I didn't know the half of the facts and info of this video. Ted-Ed never ceases to amaze me

I lost a sister to bowel cancer. I watched her suffer. Diagnosed at stage 4. GP refused to listen to her. But to be honest, drug companies do not want a cure. To much money to be made. 😔
😔 unfortunately you're not wrong. Until a large entity makes them, they wont change when everything is about money. Only thing that will make them change is if they are forced too.
Not entirely true. A cure would be a money magnet because too many cancer patients die. People love to say cure the patient lose the customer, but you also lose a customer and some of the cash flow when they do die. Since a lot of cancer patients die no one pays up the cost.
@@inherentjesse if there is a cure at once ... as time goes on it will be cheaper and cheaper... With no cure management or trails to cure it is really expensive..

@Leslie Gibbons money can stop corruption and the lies because money buys you power and you can use this power to whatever you want, or if you are really rich then you can walk your way into politics and make the good changes you want , you see money is always the answer, it’s just the rich people want you to believe that money doesn’t bring happiness bla bla bla when they are buying a new car to ride everyday and sleeping in the mansions.
@Leslie Gibbons Neither is corruption. It costs much more than 60 million dollars for one drug to get to drug stores and. And you don't really need 85% of them. Also you can lower your risks of cancer and heart diseases significantly just by following WFPB diet. Animal proteins is the main couse of cancer. I recommend doing further research on this. Hope this helped

TED-Ed A question I ask myseld for some time now: Why does not everyone get checked every few years if there are any cancerous cells in their body? Is it not detectable so easily? Would it be harmful to test? Is it too expensive? Hope someone can answer this :)
Languste
You should be getting checked yearly. If you are over 50, you should be getting checked every six months. Most cancer IS detectable early and MUCH easier to cure if detected early. It is not harmful to test for it and most tests are not expensive. Ask your doctor.
Peter Cohen Didn't know that, thanks for the fast answer :)
What I should have told is that I am only 17 and not in a very high risk to get cancer; nonetheless, getting checked regularly would not be bad :P
When will this testing start? At what age?
BS
Languste
As a general rule, you should get a checkup every year, regardless of youth, and then increase that as you age.

Good.
My Genetics professor once said "Cancer is a cell that is trying to become immortal". That slogan has stuck with me ever since because it is very true. It's what makes curing cancer so difficult.
cancer is like lesser advance organism than humans with the same motto to increase life span..."Cancer is a cell that is trying to become immortal" that is really well said
There are two problems that cancer inherently has, which unfortunately will never or only rarely be adequately adressed:
You just summarised the video in less the a few lines sheesh
THEN lets just tell the cancer cell this, " You may become immortal, but everything that last always has an end. " Maybe they'll listen...
so basically Voldermort

We will find a cure for it. Sending love to everyone who is suffering or have family suffering from this horrible disease.

Cures should be free. They have leeched so much money from us and patients it is only fair to make it free to thise with cancer.

Cancer cells are also motivated by the same need which all living beings possess: the urge to survive in any condition.
And then die with their host. So what's the point.
@@YA-hm5zy yup

Bipolar Inorder amazingly put. This is spot on. 👏
Bipolar Inorder many people know this. But you know what is even worse. Denial. People refuse to believe that they can get sick. Or get cancer. So they always suggest these things to be done by someone else. But it doesn’t apply to them. Any thoughts on how we can change that attitude ?

I'm curious as to why the human body isn't as adaptive
SPARTAN OTAKU because cancer hasn't been around that long enough for us to evolve immune to it.
@Spitty Oofer
I don’t know much, but I’m pretty sure cancer has been around since humans existed, thousands of years ago.
According to the ACS (American Cancer Society), the first descriptions of cancer were found in Egyptian writings in 3000bc. Another thing is that scientists have found proof cancer existing in animals 250million years ago. I may be wrong but I’m pretty sure it’s not a virus or bacteria, just a mutation of cells in one’s body.
anonymous tanker oh my bad then. Don’t listen to me
@@spittyoofer A theory I heard is that it actually did.
SlaiTM so Mabye at some points cancer would evolve with us to hurt us right?
I had biology in High School, so before watching this video i thought that i knew all the basic knowledge about what cancer is....

@@grayarron3646 yeah but a dead patient is a lost customer. There probably won’t ever be a set single cure for cancer. Since cancer is a disease unique to its host.
