    this is an educational video about octopus anatomy
    edit: please remain respectful in the comments! As I say at the end of the video, this book is only funny and absurd if it's not what you're into. If it *is* what you're into, this book honestly isn't that bad. And remember that a lot of quotes/metaphors I laugh at in this video are likely intended to be funny.

      If it's too long ignore it.
      For some reasons monster like characters in fictions are always better than humans and more respectful and I guess it's just the thing with fiction writing.
      The hotter someone is, the more toxic they are.
      The more "ugly" they are as monsters the more sensible and respectable they are compared to humans.
      Monsters in fictions will understand and be more respectful of people who by society are considered ugly or monsters/devils spawns (?) because they are different from others (LGBTQ+, race/skin color etc.) so aside from the sexual stuff this book have it's kinda common for monsters in fiction who look "hideous" to be nicer and more respectful because they know how it feels like being judged by their appearance without getting to know them.
      On the other hand hot people have it easy and even if they complain about them being too beautiful and people overlooking their personality in the end their personality is always toxic be it that they act all sad and depressed because being too hot is "tiring" or because they got away with everything since they are hot and rich (most of the time) so regardless of their view about themself they will always have a shitty and toxic personality if it's a generally hot character, if it's someone who people consider ugly it's made purposely to be nice and with a good personality.
      At least from what I read and saw from comics, books, movies etc. that's how it goes.
      I guess the biggest examples even if animated are Gaston against Quasimodo (I would have used the Beast as example but it's kinda hard to judge the Beast as a good person because we only ever see his bad side because he's depressed and constantly ashamed of himself so he's always mad and I didn't use the guy who Esmeralda loves because he's generally a good guy instead of a toxic handsome guy if we ignore the novel), Gaston is what everyone wants and desire but he's extremely toxic.
      Quasimodo is hated, hidden from society and the whole world in general, considered ugly however he's kind, sensitive and literally the best guy you could ask for either as a boyfriend or as a friend.
      In short, in fiction it's really common to make "ugly" characters such as monsters really kind and respectful and that's the most popular portray of them because in the past monsters were always seen as bad and known to hate humans (even if it was the human fault that caused their dangerous behavior) but with times changing now monsters are portrayed as misunderstood and docile and even friendly/kinda puppy like and constantly afraid to be hated.
      As said before however that's just my personal experience, I happened to stumble against monsters being nice and respectful a lot in fictions works, even if not sexuals like this one which I'm kinda glad for XD
      Edit: there's nothing wrong with it being sexual though, I just prefer love stories without sex.

    Most people attracted to monsters aren’t attracted to the “I can fix him” mentality. The attraction there is having someone big and strong enough to protect you, but also one that would be gentle and respectful of your personal boundaries.
    That’s why consent is such a big thing in many monster smut works - it’s part of the appeal to have such a horrendous creature being more respectful than many real people we consider “beautiful”.

    • @blackosprey2219
      @blackosprey2219 ปีที่แล้ว +610

    • @engelberthovel8566
      @engelberthovel8566 ปีที่แล้ว +282

      Yeah, I wouldn’t say I’m exactly in the demographic, because I’m not really into hardcore smut of any kind, much less scary hardcore smut, but I have to say I kind of get the appeal of the romance aspect. I think there’s just something really sweet about the “against all odds” sort of thing going on with it. Even though they literally couldn’t be more different, they feel this really sincere affection for each other, and they’re happy to work around all the strange barriers together to make the relationship work.
      Additionally, I think it’s the appeal of “seeing the good that was always there, but wasn’t obvious at first,” which is NOT the same thing as “I can fix him”. He was ALWAYS in his heart (or hearts?) a sweet and respectful lil tentacle monster, even if they had some cultural divides and confusion at times. He was never a bad guy that needed fixing, or to change at all. He just didn’t have anyone who saw him for the nice person he was inside, under all the scary tentacles. He never needed to change, he only needed to be recognized.
      I also think the “possessiveness” actually has a more positive connotation here than normal, because to me it just sounds more like he feels like he has an exceptionally strong personal bond with her (again, cause they love each other so much that they don’t care at all that they’re extremely different creatures), and it’s more of a loyalty thing than a controlling thing. He wants to stay by her side and stand up for her, and he wants to be hers just as much as she’s his. “Mine” here implies mutual loyalty and support to me more than it implies that she’s just a possession.

      yeah, this. i think what also plays the part, especially for people ostracized by society for one reason or the other, is safety in being loved, wanted and seen as beautiful no matter your appearance, social status or any other factors seen by society as undesirable or gross because obviously, monsters, especially otherwordly ones, don't hold human prejudices. which is also why monster romance is popular within queer people who are commonly seen as unnatural freaks, so it's also a "monster meets monster" sentiment and the beauty of an unconventional relationship between individuals rejected by the society

    Hot take: possessiveness is only romantic when it's "out of character". Think sweet/geek gf/bf actually getting angry when someone tries to get between you two when they're usually really calm. If someone gets possessive at any slight sign of trouble, it looks really immature, but if it's "out of character" it means you're important enough to cause that kind of response with them, as opposed to them just throwing a temper tantrum. Bonus points if they usually have trouble standing up for themselves. Inherently, possessiveness often looks insecure to me, and insecurity and confidence are opposites, so the more confident your character is the more they should reasonably be able to be self assured in the fact that the protagonist is "theirs" without having to make grand gestures or explicitly stating it.

    • @deepsea5348
      @deepsea5348 ปีที่แล้ว +778

      Good take, also bonus points if it only happens because the main character says something like “that persons making me uncomfortable, I don’t like the way they’re looking at me,” and THEN the s/o gets protective.

    • @Nixahma
      @Nixahma ปีที่แล้ว +348

      @@deepsea5348 Absolutely! Even better: a novel I read had an MC who had an anxiety diagnosis, and in one of the scenes the LI actually goes out of his way to ask her if she's alright himself. As someone who also has anxiety, that brings me so much joy. Possessiveness and protectiveness should always be in compliance with/service to the other person in the relationship, as opposed to clashing with them (and when it does, take notes from ATLA and actually turn it into a conflict instead of pretending it doesn't matter).
      Also, stray thought: I don't think people realise that when someone agrees to date you, they're (most of the time) already agreeing to being "yours", in a sense- it's when people/characters start pushing the limits of what that means that it starts to become uncomfortable. There's a distinct difference between someone being your s/o and being your personal belonging (namely how much of their own autonomy they get to keep). As someone's s/o, all you truly "own" is the right (I'd call it a right, anyhow) to be the sole recipient of their romantic attention.
      Honestly, a lot of these issues could be fixed by just rephrasing "you're mine" to something more tasteful, since 80% of the time it has the same underlying meaning as something like "I care about you because you're my partner" except it's also icky.

    As a connoisseur of monster romance (specifically venom fanfiction) the "I can fix him" fantasy tends to only be present in stuff written for an audience of cishet white women. The much more popular fantasy has to do with loving and being loved by an Other, especially when you yourself have been othered all your life. It's about how bodies and people are categorized, and how it does not matter if society will never accept you, because the other outcasts will, since their own ideas about people and bodies are much more malleable than society's. That's like, the thesis of The Shape of Water. Half of all venom fic is about learning to love yourself by seeing what you think are flaws through the eyes of someone who doesn't have the same societal biases as you.
    What fascinates me about this particular book is the mixture of a very mainstream monster with fairly kinky stuff. The monster looks almost completely human, is conventionally attractive, is conventionally monstrous (tentacles are extremely popular) and even his monstrous tendencies are temporary. However, the acts performed are pretty kinky even for the genre (though nowhere near the level of the weirdest stuff). It's not just your usual bondage stuff. That's an interesting combination.

    Loving the monster / caring for the monster, to me is more like, people recognizing that these outwardly monsterous looking creatures are also deserving of love. Because society so quickly others and alienates those that it deems other/ ugly as being bad/ evil. I think there is a real correlation between loving the monster and loving yourself for who you are without shame and without being deemed evil for being who you want to be

      It's a narrative that a lot of marginalised people feel a connection to because other people label us as monsters all the time. It's why, for example, you find so many queer people in the furry community, because people already see us as other, so embracing that otherness is very freeing for a lot of people. The same goes for monster romance, & how it's not about the 'I can fix him' thing but about the 'I will accept him as he is' that a lot of marginalised people don't get from others

    I think it’s important to recognize that there’s a huge difference between “I can fix him” and “I see that he’s always been a kind person even though he might appear intimidating at first”. The former is undeniably toxic and encourages unhealthy and unsafe relationships, but the latter is quite sweet and has no inherent toxicity at all. It’s typically about recognizing the inherent kindness and positivity in a person who may not have been treated very kindly in the past, and appreciating them for who they are. It doesn’t defend toxic behavior, because the romantic interest doesn’t behave in a mean or toxic way, they only have the appearance of being intimidating, which prevents people from actually getting to know them and quickly realizing that they’re quite kind and respectful. I haven’t really read any monster romance, but I think that this is way more likely to be the romantic appeal than the idea of “fixing” the guy, especially since it doesn’t seem like the monsters really change (and good for them! Be proud of who you are, monster man).
    The monster is sweet, but no one knows it because everyone else is scared by his appearance, and he’s happy and relieved when he meets the protagonist and she sees him as a person rather than just a scary creature. Then they have a really close and affectionate relationship because the protagonist is happy to have found this delightful hidden gem of a person, and the monster is happy that someone truly loves him for who he is. That just sounds like an inherently very nice and cute story to me, and I think that that’s probably more what people are going for. (Of course I’m sure they’re also going for kinky sex and all, but I think there’s definitely also sort of a fun and cute story aspect to it)

    My impression of Siggy Shade based on this video is that she seems like the female M/F counterpart to Chuck Tingle. Both write kind of bizarre monster/creature erotica that are very self-aware and make sure to include healthy consent behavior (like safe words in this video), with eye-catching images that make you go "wtf is this I have to see how weird this gets" only for the reader to find something very genuine.
    Also saw another comment that touched upon this but I just wanted to give my two cents: While monster erotica can get the bad rep of being only for very horny women that like unhealthy "I can fix him" type stuff, it's actually quite popular among folks of varying backgrounds that can make them feel like a "hideous monster" in the eyes of others (ie. LGBT+ and disabled communities). So the indulgence becomes more like a self-love/self-acceptance sort of thing, where the romance with the monster/creature is symbolic of the acceptance of how even "the othered" desire love and affection or symbolic of accepting one's "othered" status and no longer letting that weigh you down. I can't say for sure if Siggy Shade writes from that perspective as my only exposure has been from this video, I did feel the need to add to the discussion tho.

    26:40 I've had an IUD implanted and the idea of a whole a** tentacle being all up IN the cervix sounds like absolute torture 🫠

    My brain feels so violated right now. But also do you even understand how fast it could be turned into horror movie (aliens possessing humans for replication). Like Jessica turns out to be boss alien undercover and she actually on the mission of luring people to become living incubators for monster baby. What a lost opportunity. Honestly.

    I love that the content warning has a whole list of crazy things then something as comparatively mundane as “workplace sexual harassment”

      I do love that unironically. The author writes some over the top shit while still keeping in mind possible boundaries/limits of the readers.

    I read all the Shade books just out of curiosity and Im always surprised at the amount of lore and background they put into the books. I also appreciate how they always give a happy ending LMAO

    17:00 wtf did I just listen to- 😭😭Alpha romance writers need to take notes. I'll give credit where credit is due, the research this author made regarding octopus anatomy is worth the applause. To even think that this whole story started with a TH-cam soundwave video... I'm never listening to any of those ever again 😍
