I have a marathon model mx11 with a built in tube overdrive, i should just be able to plug in a distortion pedal in this for a similar effect right? (I've been playing guitar for almost 16 years but just recently switched over to electric and your videos helps me alot!)

It's certainly possible! I'd recommend investing in some sort of drive or distortion pedal to really get closer to that Slipknot tone. Two pedals that spring to mind are the Fender Pugilist for distortion and the Ibanez Tubescreamer TS9 for drive. Adding those into your current rig will give you that much needed gain boost! Or you could be really avant-garde and play slipknot with a fender champ ;)
