Oh god somewhere on the internet there’s an amazing video of Mike Einziger from Incubus doing guitar tutorials, and some dude asked him for a tutorial on Black Heart Intertia. And Mike, god bless him, played like half a lick and literally could not remember how he played the rest of the song. One of the funniest damn things I’ve ever seen and it was nice to see him and everyone else have a nice big laugh about it.

To sum up: The "little harmonic thing" leading into the chorus it's an overdub in standard tuning!
    So tune to: *C# G# C# F# B E* .
The PC harmonic will be top 2 strings, 4th fret. 🎸
    Enjoy fellows guitarists! 🐺

    • @ElegantJames
      @ElegantJames ปีที่แล้ว +15

Agreed, I have always wanted to sit down with Brad or Mike and ask specifically how something is played, and how wrong tabs and tutorials are, because while we know the notes, there's little nuances that every guitar player has that we usually miss. This way we know them and can play it exactly as it was recorded, like I didn't know about the top 2 in standard tuning in One Step Closer for the second pre-chorus. I could never get that sound right

While I don’t make music, Linkin Park & individual members are huge inspirations to me and my work. As I’ve gone along quoting various things from them?
My phone in fact HAS learned what things I want to be capitalised related to them. But! Sadly this is a time where my phone DIDN’T know what I wanted! Being that that’s my #4 Linkin Park song off my 2nd favorite record (‘Reanimation’ is my #1 Linkin Park record) I was like, “Oh come ON phone! You know that’s important..! See, this is the difference between someone who learned music at the school of life and then someone who actually got educated in music. The precision in the explanation. The precision the detail. The confidence of knowing what he is talking about and explaining how to do while anticipating the result by exactly knowing what is going to happen.
In the end, this IS musical knowledge.

Mike, my one and only LP concert was 2004 Project Revolution Tour with The Used, Less Than Jake, Snoop, Korn, and you guys over in Tampa. I will never forget the entire concert and whrn Jonathan Daves came out to sing One Step Closer with you guys. Truly memorable moment!!! After that I saw Chester with Stone Temple Pilots in which to this day still one of the most unforgettable concerts for me. The reason why? He couldn't hold his screaming and would scream into some of the chorus parts and then apologize for the screaming. What an amazing person that he was. And then finally I saw you and Mr. Hahn at the House of Blues in Orlando after Chester passed.
Thank you for helping me throughout some of the most difficult times of my lifes which includes depression, when I kept being bullied, and more. LP lyrics has always being there for me and many others. Love your side project Fort Minor as well Mike!

Thanks for the video! Linkin Park was a huge influence for me to get into playing guitar and writing music and lyrics when I was 15. And it stuck with me ever since! Thank you Linkin Park for being an inspiration and an awesome band for everyone for over 20 years now!

The music you and your band made through my child and teenhood were so burned into my head, I managed to learn the basics of 2 Songs on my Keyboard without looking up the chords or notes. Manged to Learn "In the End" and "Castle of Glass" purely out of my head and I'm now trying to experiment with both of them to kinda create my own lil imagination of them.
Lil Funfact I noticed, "In the End - Linking Park" and "His World - Tomoya Ohtani (Sonic 2006)" play on the same chords and are super easy to mash up or transition between while playing, which are 2 of my all time favorite songs.
    Stay Awesome Mike

Magic of the internet: I was searching once again for a correct tabs of this song yesterday. Today, this video was suggested by TH-cam ...
Since the first time I've been playing "One Step Closer" on a gig after 1.5 years of exp. on guitar at age 18 to this day, 20 years later, I felt there was something wrong in all the tabs I had seen and never was satisfied with the outcome when playing. But I couldn't tell what some of these mysterious notes in the intro where.
I also realized I was playing incorrectly the other details of the song pointed out in this video.
Thank you so much for solving this 20 year mystery!
And thanks to the whole band for all the emotions I feel when hearing this masterpiece of an album: Hybrid Theory

regarding One Step Closer: i knew about the harmonics in the intro and the 9ths in the chorus, but i never realized that the 9th was on top in the pre-chorus as well. i've been playing that as a straight G5 (F#5 in the correct tuning) for YEARS. you learn something new every day lol. also GODDAMN thank you for FINALLY teaching us the trick to get that pre-chorus harmonic because i've been trying to figure that out for YEARS as well lol. before watching this, i would just hit slightly open dead notes on the D-A-D strings just above the 2nd fret for that part
regarding the middle and pinky thing for octaves: i just play octaves with my index and pinky and lay my index in a way where the very tip is gently touching underneath the low E to mute it

Linkin Park was the reason I taught myself how to play guitar. One Step Closer and Faint are actually the first songs I learned. I really love this insight. Especially the harmonic that I could never nail because I didn't know it needed to be standard tuning.
I would love to know exactly how you guys do the bend (the screeching noice) in the breakdown of Given Up.

You guys were all so important to me even halfway round the globe. I'd steal my brother's CD and sneakily listen to LP songs on the computer after school because I didn't have another way to listen to them. It'd make my brother so mad but it's something, a memory that binds us together now, decades later literally.
God i freaking love Linkin Park. Still religiously listen to your songs!

I’m glad LP are back, but I hope everyone warms up to Emily better, ASAP !!!!! Lady’s got a voice !!!! Clean singing vocals are lovely and her rocker/metal-ish voice is freakin’ epic !!!!! The group will always have my condolences in regards to Chester, but with Emily and you fronting, the legendary group is in great hands - just saying. Been a humongous fan of LP since I was just a kiddo - I’m talking late kindergarten-early 1st grade kind of early. Keep crushing it y’all ❤️👍👍 !!!!!!!!!

Hybrid Theory is the first album that I ever bought, I was only 11 years old when I saw this commercial spot on TV (in France) and I was like "OMFG WTF IS THIS ?!?" and it was Papercut and One Step Closer playing along. This very day changed my life, I would never have played in band years after that without your work guys, thank you so much !
