You are doing it right with one thing wrong. You need to put dead grass or leaves at the end of the line you started so that way your ember will have a place to grow. Helpful tips for you Matt!

The only way I know to start a fire is matches or a lighter. Even I thought there should be something to catch a spark.

Even S30V would’ve been a nice upgrade. AUS8 or D2 and I would’ve been on it in a heartbeat. I can get a Kershaw with 8cr13mov for $20.

You have the right idea putting tension on the tree while cutting it down But you should be holding the blade parallel to the ground and push cutting downwards. whack the spine of the knife with a smaller stick many 12 - 18 in long and never use a rock. For fire starting you need to cut a channel for the embers to fall into while you create friction. Have your tinder bundle ready and direct the ember channel into the tinder. be persistent! Love the content!
Once you have smoke on the log, uou need to put kindling on it so it will light.

They look like quality knives but the blade materials for that price I’d want at least a d2 steel, but 8cr13mov is the bottom of the barrel Chinese steel .

I'd actually like to see Matt and Rob go up to Canada to do a three to five day with Joe robinet, or have the guy from TA outdoors come to the USA and do a three day.
Bow drill set made from Cedar is way more efficient than the fireplow method IMO. Many people prefer the hand drill method, but you need to use the right materials. Green wood is better with Bow Drill, you have to burn in the divot on the hearth board first, you need to carve a notch to collect the ember in the ember pan. On the bearing block, you need to put a great deal of pressure. Don't stop when you see smoke, increase the speed instead. On the hand drill use Mullien plant for the spindle rub the spindle with your hands in a V shape not flat on the spindle, use the same principles as the bow drill, good amount of pressure and don't stop when you see smoke. Just a few tips

You can split a bullet in half with a butter knife. It doesn’t take much to split a bullet but it does take quite a bit to stop one. When you split a bullet you’re not stopping it’s forward motion. The energy transferred into the blade is minimal.
now on the list of knifes, you need to design a survival knife with a firestarter(flint and mag) feature...just saying....bring that up at the next board meeting......

Flint and steel is my favorite method, I legitimately have several kits with hand forged steels good flint tinder and char cloth, I never go camping or hiking without at least one of em

Their camping knives, so clip point and drop point knives tend to be better for camping in my opinion. I’m not saying tantos are bad for camping, any knife is better than no knife, just that that’s probably why they don’t have a tanto knife in their lineup.

Cutting a spear at the lake this summer just for fun. My dad lectured me about not cutting towards myself. I listened at first but 1 time I cut towards myself and slice my thumb open.
6 years ago, I was skinning a coyote with a dull knife and cut towards myself and stabbed my self in the leg,about 6 inches away from my manly section 2 1/2 inches deep!! The funny thing is I was going around the male coyotes manly section as well!! To this day I have NEVER cut towards myself again!!!!!!

When you try to start a fire you need to have somehting there like the grass you had next to it on the spot your rubbing to get the hot ember

When it comes to cooking fish, I find that a makeshift spit roast type contraption works. Only takes 3 sticks, 2 with a "y" in them & 1 straight. Skewer the fish w the straight stick set it up and there ya go.
Of course theres plenty of other methods to use I just find that this one works best for me. It's all subjective tho.

Hand drill firestarter tip... tie a shoestring to your two thumbs and hand the middle on the top of the stick, then spin the stick. Your hands dont slide down
