I’m currently going to veterinary school and I’ve noticed so much about your dogs movement and tendencies that show that he really loves you. You can tell that even when you scold him his ears remain straight and he doesn’t become unsure. He also faces his back towards you often indicating trust and respect. Great dog owner. I've lived in a remote area of the Mojave Desert for the past 43 years and I've always hated to see the garbage people leave behind when they've visited this area, so I applaud you Joe for your cleanup of your camp when leaving... A man's dog is his most loyal friend. Mine is Lou, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. This is a super video!

Awesome job Joe you did pretty damn good with 10$ ! Deffenitly one of my top videos out of the dollar store challenge series. I think you should do a $50 challenge or a $100 challenge for people who want to get into bushcraft and can spend a decent amount like 50 - 100 $ , you can show us what your opion is on the items a begginer should get with this kind of budget .

Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!When I was a girl scout this was the kind of thing we had to do to get our primitive camping badges I know that now they are more coddled.I had 3 other scouts with me we had to make a campsite with shelter,cooking area and latrines one weekend and return the next weekend (to stay from Friday nite til Sunday)and repair any animal damage.This was in mid-winter here in Delaware.Our bedding was completely destroyed when we returned the second week-end and drug around the site so Friday evening as the sunset we had to quickly find new bedding,firewood and make repairs.We did pack in water,food and some simple camp equipment(a hand axe,matches,jute rope,pocket knives and fire starters-no matches) We did have sleeping bags the second weekend as temps fell below 20 at nite and we were just kids in our early teens.Was a real self affirming experience,and taught us all that we could take care of ourselves no matter what happened.I am thrilled to see a resurgence in interest to basic survival skills that aren't from doomsday preppers.
It's kinda sad because now pretty much all girl scout troops and most all boy scout trips are super pampered and never do any pioneering-like stuff (except for the people that really work hard and stuff)
I _wish_ they taught me skills like this as a girl scout! All we did was paint friendship stones and glue bits of construction paper together.

If you place some of the grass length wise and then place some of it cross wise, and do that in several layers, it will not compress as much and be more comfy...

This is my second video of yours and I have to agree with Gamer, there is something about you that makes your videos authentic. I think you are a genuine young man who reminds us of what we were like growing up. Keep up the videos Joe you are alright.
This is real survival. Not a $250 dollar overnight stay (inside of a tent, with torch and friends in backyard). I like this. And it is not 14 minutes!! It’s a good nice hour!!

You can pick up quality clothes at thrift stores, ebay, etc.
Yeah, keep an eye out at thrift stores, you can pick up some quality stuff. just last week I found a good quality, old-school Craftsman axe. Needs a new handle, but it's a good axe for like 12$ total and a bit of time. You don't have to get name-brand, either; a decent fleece layer is a decent fleece, whether it's a 120$ North Face or a 6$ random brand at goodwill.
Also, as K mentioned, ebay. Military surplus gortex jacket 20-60$, Arc'teryx gortex 400$. Been using the milsurp for years, would not spend the money on the latter.

I go tent camping with my son on occasion but have been toying with the idea of getting a little more serious. Your videos are a joy to watch and really give me some ideas. Hope to try some of these ideas out someday.
You should have combined the soup with the kibble for Scout, he would have eaten it all just to get at the soup. Often times, if the dog is not eating dog food, it is because it recognizes that it is not real food. Mix real food with it and they will eat it gladly.

I was just gonna type this but went through a few comments to see if anyone already said it and there it is.
I would of fed a raw diet to my german shepard if i knew the dry food i fed him was killing him. Thats why scout doesnt want it. My dog was sick and malnourished from the dry dog food :(

Hey "old man Joe" I know you don't know me, and I literally just heard of the word "bushcrafting" yesterday, but I wanna say thank you haha. I've been going through a dipressive slump lately. Yesterday TH-cam randomly recommended that I watch your 5.2 mil blow up about you bushcrafting alone in the winter woods for two days, so I did watch it... 48 hours later, I've been up nonstop watching 29 of your videos from start to finish. This will be the 30th video I've watched, and I've noticed 3 things in particular:
1. Your family is very important to you
2. You have a good heart
3. You make a ton of hip-hop references hahaha
In all seriousness I've learned so much from you, Doug, and Steve over the past two days. So I just ordered a 24" Fiskars from Amazon and the titanium spork from Heavy Cover Inc. and I'm gonna go explore the bush behind my house tomorrow morning. I'm even gone bring my own doggo, T'Challa (aka Cha Cha). Thank you for being such an inspirational force and helping me get out of bed and try something new! Joe, dude, I love your videos. I have watched dozens of your vids and I dig the hour long episodes because it really puts the time you spend out there into perspective. You seem like a real down to earth guy and your passion for nature and outdoor survival is really inspiring to me. You are one the youtubers I follow and admire, and that help me to feel like a better person.
There is nothing wrong with taking on a challenge like this. It was very interesting and you did a really good job, IMO. I think it's good to see what you can do with so little because it's like what if someone would be stranded out in the wild like that with hardly anything to work with. I think, thanks to you and Shawn, I could start a fire and keep it going if it were needed. I have the name of the steel you mentioned and I will get a good knife to go with it. Maybe put together a little bug-out type bag and keep it in the car. Thanks again.

Dumb question, why not actually bunk with Scout and conserve body heat?
Scott Cannon, in the previous video he said it would be too hot for scout inside the shelter.
scout has a double coat and would be too warm
He also probably didn’t want the dog accidentally tearing the plastic.
The shelter you would build would be slightly different if you were going to bunk next to the dog. But the dog would dig it. It's not a dumb question, but I believe the challenge was to spend $10 and survive overnight. He slightly modified the challenge by bringing the dog. But to specifically use the dogs heat would modify it enough he would not have been able to label it as doing the "challenge". His minor violations were insignificant. imo.

What works great in that type of shelter is a emergency blanket. If you place it behind you where you had the black plastic bags and the fire in front where you had it the radiant heat will actually deflect down onto you and into the shelter and the shelter will be unbelievably warm. Try it sometime..
when we was but a wee lad we had a mattress made of straw your bed kind of brought back memories of it enjoyed

Canadian dollar knife has done a lot of work. Fine grit whetstone sharpening and it has another life. Shows you can do a lot with very little but that little does a lot.
