In this video I discuss the proper method for disassembling the Swiss K31 rifle. You will most likely never have to take the rifle down any further than this for proper maintenance.

The K31, my favorite manual cycling milsurp rifle ever! There are just too many good things to say about this rifle. I urge you all to test one out and get one. You honestly won't find a more accurate surplus rifle with a very clean trigger and craftsmanship. Thanks again Eric.
Very nice video, I shoot the K31 in competitions. Glad to see you folks like our craftsmanship :)
Greetings from Switzerland.
Do u guys drill and tap k31
Great video! Eric I thank you for introducing me to the K31. I found a nice 1944 example at my favorite local gun shop, very fun, accurate and interesting gun to own and shoot.
up here in Canada a lot of Swiss K31s are available. We even have Swiss rifle shooting clubs that shoot long range on DND ranges
I bought my K31 about 2 years ago when the supply was great. Mine looks as good on the bluing and the stock isn't quite as rough as that one. I've only run about 20 shells thru mine. Since the rifle stayed with the soldier at home, they usually kept the bores immaculate and the rifle clean. I did look under the butt plate and I found a small card handwritten with the owners name and unit and year of issue to him. The soldier even had a lock of his hair with it. Very nice rifles.
Great video! Btw to disassemble the trigger mechanism you only need to unload the spring then you can pull everything out, without removing some pins or something.
Greetings from Switzerland :)
I got one of those last Fall. I like owning it. It came with a bayonet and scabbard and I had a chance to shoot it once. It is a great gun with an excellent design. This vid will be of help should I find a need to take it apart.
Who gives this guy the thumbs down, seriously. Great videos mate, very informative, appreciated. (I am in the process of buying a K31, it won't be here for a little while thanks to our great Australian gun laws..)
The flared pin is not actually attached to the trigger. It acts like a "step" which transitions the trigger from the first stage to the second stage. I actually thought the flared pin was attached to the mechanism, but discovered that the pin is only pinned to the frame.
To remove the trigger here are the steps.
1. Use a multi tool to lift the outer spring off the trigger mechanism. This will cause the trigger to move freely without tension.
2. Pull the middle portion of the spring out of the groove in the center of the trigger housing.
3. Now take the forward bar out with a multi tool. You should notice that the deeper recessed part of the spring was applying tension to this bar, which kept it in place. The bar comes out quite effortlessly.
4. Grab the link with your multi tool and gently wiggle the trigger assembly out. This rifle is very tight on the tolerances so be patient.
5. Clean and perform any trigger work you want. That being said, the triggers on these rifles are so sweet that a good cleaning is all that needs to be done.
I got mine four years ago in used but good condition. Luckily they don't accept guns at the local scrap yard. So I asked the guy trying to get rid of it and he gave it to me for free. Now it's got the original target sights and shoots very well at 300 meters (swiss competition distance, 330 yards).
Just got a K31 (in the market for a K11 now) and its fast becoming my favorite Milsurp. Not quite as high on list as a Garand, but close. I measure my C&R trigger by the trigger on this rifle.
Swiss rifles are some of the best deals in the C&R world today.
Yeah, they are pretty popular up here. Just got my PAL and bought my first rifle. A Swiss k-31. Can't wait for it to get home :P With all the videos from IV8888 and information from CGN, it wasn't long before i knew what i wanted first.
The trigger is very easy to remove without driving the flared pin out.
K31 is the biggest current bargain in Milsurps IMO. Thank you for making the video, Eric.
I see plenty of mil-surp rifles available at the local shops. If Eric keeps up these old rifle vids I may just go and buy one to give it a loving home.
THANK YOU ERIC!
I just purchased a K31 a few weeks ago and this is exactly what i wanted
If you get an old K31, you should definitly take the trigger components out. Those "blank" metal surface bars and their pivot pins usually have gotten gunked up and don't turn well, which makes the trigger pull "creepy". Still a clean break, but the pull to the pressure-point will be creepy. Just take it out, wiggle it around and clean it with WD-40 or something to get all that gunk out.
Ive been waiting for you and Ken to link up! I sporterized mine, pillared it, floated it and glass bedded it. I'm getting sub moa groups with gp11 @ 200yds. :) I cant wait to make my own loads!!
I really love these breakdown videos. I could watch a show like this all day, like 'This Ol' Gun.'
The K31 in this video is absolutely flawless!
heh just ordered one today, 1941 made and walnut stock ^^
Thanks for putting this video together and thank you for your service to our country.
I know this video is ten years old, but it's still the best one, so imma say this here. YOU DO NOT NEED TO PUSH THAT PIN OUT TO REMOVE THE TRIGGER. If you disconnect the trigger spring the trigger will slide down off that pin and be able to be removed. It doesn't go through a hole in the trigger it just rests on a semicircular cut out in it.
The trigger mechanism is real easy to pull out, there is no need to remove the pin the the trigger pivots around. It does not go threw the trigger it just pivots on it. My k31 came with a very light trigger and a non-existent second stage and luckily I found a new trigger assembly on ebay for 15$ and fixed the issue. 2.5 lb. trigger with a pronounced second stage now and wow is all i can say. The spring is easy to swap out and i am told that shooters at the annual Shutzenfest swap new springs in every year.
Everyone needs at least one Mosin. The K31 is a really sweet rifle which you should also own. Buy both.
The k31 is really perfect like it is. It is the most accurate rifle I have ever shot, and fairly inexpensive, even after the prices went up.
Mosins seem to be more available, they go for anywhere from $99 to $200, you can find 7.62x54R at any gun store, K31s seem to go for around $250 to $400, and I've never seen the 7.5x55 swiss cartridge anywhere.
Swiss army knife is the way to go for all disassembly tasks.
Love these rifles this will be my next purchase now i have my no4 Lee Enfield. Swiss quality. A fan from the UK
"drilled and tapped"
WTF? Why? If you wanted a sporting rifle buy a sporting rifle!
This just makes me sick to my stomach...
K31 is better than any other $300 sporting rifle you could ever buy.
+ShaDOWDoG667
I don';t think you understand. Why would you molest a k31?
A Stevens (savage) model 200 is MORE than adequate as a sporting rifle and would possibly shoot a tighter group.
The whole point of buying a k31 one is to have a k31. Not some sporterized monstrosity.
+ladefreakndah Think of it this way. For every "molested" K31 out there the more your factory condition K31 without import marks or what ever other unique features it does or does not have will, in the future, be worth even more at auction.
+ShaDOWDoG667
Gun molesters are making perfectly good antique arms unavailable to future generations. Running up prices doesn't make for a sound argument. If it's better than any sporting rifle you can buy then you don't need to putz with it. There are plenty of non-invasive modifications you can do. That includes scope mounts so why drill it? We don't need bubba's buying up antiques and destroying history. This clearly isn't their market, they need to stay out of it. Go buy a new *Savage bolt action rifle* if you want to dick around.
I've seen a 8000 dollar gun reduced to a sub 1000 dollar gun because some idiot with a buffing wheel inherited his fathers gun collection.
+ladefreakndah I agree. It's tasteless to take a fine rifle such as this and make permanent, unnecessary modifications to it. Adding a scope mount isn't that bad, but seeing people tacticool the shit out of old bolt guns like this is a whole different level of cringe.
Thought about a sporter stock for mine so I will be interested in seeing yours with one. K31 is just an all around great rifle. I pass up my Howa 270 and hunt deer with my K31 I just love the way it looks and love the way it shoots, infact I love everything about the gun. Reloading for the K31 is a breeze, love it with Hornady sst 165 grain bullets. Talk about Deer stopping power.
Me and my uncle took my rockslid K31 build out. I didn't have a micrometer but my 3shot group @ 100 had to be around .5 moa. We were limited on distance but we set up targets @ this cutbank that we ranged @ 447yds. I hit the pill bottle we had @ that distance......The only problem for me is the ejection on the mount......Other than that Ill put it up against any rem700 .308 any day!!!.
K31 is an absolutely beautiful rifle. It was my first and I love the thing. Mosin's good though too, but given the choice between the two I got the Mosin second.
Though the Mosin is cheaper and everything for it is more available. It's just not the same thrill to shoot, in my own opinion.
It depends on the Mosin you get. A large amount of them are wartime rifles that were assembled in a rush. Wartime rifles are generally poorer quality.
What I wouldn't give for a K31 in that condition before the collector value was trashed with the drilling. I could just throw up. I would have traded you a nice hunting rifle worth twice the value to have saved that historic rifle!! No more of those will ever be made and that's one less in original condition that exists. It's gone forever to become a hunting/target rifle for a guy that has plenty of hunting/target rifles. Sickening Eric.
depends on the condition. if it is in good condition (bore is most important) then yes, that is on the low side, good deal. if you have an opportunity to get one, do it. One of the most entertaining guns i have shot
That's a great price! I'm already looking for one, and plan to look at the next gun show. Thanks. Good shooting.
I have an M1911, with the same water damage on the butt stock, otherwise in immaculate condition. Simple to take down like a Mosin but accurate and quick to operate like a Lee Enfield. Exquisite rifles.
The engineering that went into mil-surp weapons amazes me.
Excellent video Eric. Thank you!
Thanks, I think I'll do just that. Going to start looking around here first for price. Probably Mosin first, then K31. If I can't find the Mosin, the K31 moves up the list.
This is th type of vid is what made me subscribe way back when.
Thanks alot for videos like this one.
Mine is all matching but no soldier info card :-( bayonet isn't matching but it's a 1941 all matching rifle in near mint condition for $500 with a correct non matching bayonet and 160 rounds of ammo and an ammo box.
Took my wife and son to the range today, it was too much fun brother.
Thanks again....
That depends on where you live ;) Here in Switzerland they sell for about 50 Fr. for a "normal" K31, and about 100 Fr. if you want a real nice one (Swiss francs - USD is about the same).
highly anticipating this sporter series, though i love mosins and they can be made into extremely accurate rifles, they down compare to the swiss k-31 across the board, except in reliabilty and simplicity.
This is a lot like really a lot like my enfield haha except for the bolt and some of the trigger. Cool vid
I love your "How to" vids, however, this type of video only pertains to a select viewing audience (owners of the firearm being shown). Where something like this could promote someone to purchase one, I think it's a better idea to keep the vids on a general scale, and not gun specific. Keep up the great work Eric and Berry! You guys are terrific!
Thanks for the video, just got my first K31.
Thanks for the video; it was really helpful to see how one is supposed to take the bolt apart - I am going to do it your way from now on! Love my K31. I wish I would have snapped a few more up when they were cheap. I have the St. Marie scope temp mount (a smart piece of engineering) and with a 10X scope makes my K31 a real tack driver. It's a big heavy rifle though, I wouldn't want to carry it. I consider mine the "garrison" sniper rifle ; ) I am interested to see what you do with yours.
Eric I’m still waiting for the part 2!!! Please!
I already have an Enfield No4 Mk1. I am thinking of getting a Mosin. In comparing the two, which do you like the most, taking into consideration ammo availability, rifle availability, parts availability, and ease of service and operation.
Did i hear you say you were going to sporterize this gun? If so, i cant wait for the videos :D
That's a cool little rifle. Watching this makes me want one. are they hard to come by?
gosh, still have this one from my grand-father.
If you're going to go with a synthetic stock for the sporterization project anyway, have you considered duracoating the stock in Swiss alpenflage pattern? I think it would look interesting and be a tip of the hat to the rifle's country of origin.
Agreed. Mosins aren't the pinpoint accurate guns that people claim them to be. The only exception would be some of the Finnish Mosins.
Nice video, looking forward to seeing this converted.
Erik, what what you recommend to clean one of these, brake cleaner or would Ballistol be a better option? Also, recommended grease for this gun? I've heard any modern lithium grease and I assume some good gun oil. Thoughts? Thanks. It's a 50s model, and it has a lot of the orange gunk on it, which I've heard was the original grease/or cosmoline, unsure about that. Thanks for the help.
The action works great by the way. It's probably just more of a general cleaning to make it look good, and a good lube to make sure every metal surface is happy.
Thank you! Rick
Thanks Eric! Keep up the how to's!!
You've already done K31 bolt disassembly in the milsurp bolts video.
Thanks for all your helpful videos!!!
to be honest: I like my k31 and k11 just a tad better than my Garand. These things are awesome shooters.
Actually the nose cap assembly , rear band screw and front trigger guard screw needs to be tight as possible by hand with a swiss army knive. The reas screw should be hand tightened slightly less. The barrel should not be free floating as the K11 had. Tn this way as it was you could get accuracy issues.
hi eric
I would be nice that you do a video about sisassembly and reloadingfor the m-1896 swedish mauser.
thnaks
Could you please do a video on how to take off the front sight of a Swiss G11 rifle. :)
Thanks for uploading this video.
I have a buddy who bought one off his grandpa for about .50 dollars . Lucky bastard.
Beautiful rifle. If I get one I hope my serial number match it would be perfect
the K 31 is awesome.
I don't think I was clear in my question. Since I already have the Enfield, my question pertains to the choice between the Mosin and the K31.
Another great video!
Mosin wins out in all those categories at the moment, personally though I would absolutely love an Enfield if I could get my hands on one and some surplus ammo.
Plenty of the 7.5x55 Swiss out there at Wideners, AimSurplus etc. Mosin's are great rifles, but the K31 is 10x more accurate...
Great Video, as usual !
Outstanding video, thank you
I love the K31
Thanks a lot for this awesome video. I have my k31 5 days ago and I want to upgrade and clean the gun but I never disassembled this particular weapon and your video help me a lot. Many thanks. 👍
This was filmed a while back, don't worry, the beard is still in tact. :)
I almost bought one of these at a gun show because of you lol.
This was gp11 too! No handloads yet.
Very good.
I think if you want to shoot accurately on such long distances you can get a rifle made for that. Im not saying youre making bullshit, you know what youre doing, but, to be honest, i think the rifle looses his historical value if you drill holes in it. Thats no offend. On the other side i can understand that you want to know what that rifle is capable of. Whatever, i like the work youre doing and go on with that. Greets from Germany
I just bought some from a guy on gunbroker. He seemed to have quite a bit. $15 for a box of 20.
I just now, bought a K-31 . I am in Canada and this Carbine cost me 299.99 Can$ plus 13% sales tax (how's that for a rip?) These guns are beautiful, and I can't wait to get to the Range. This How To episode was just what I needed, Thanks Eric.
These guns are worth thousands
M W I meant that the 13% sales tax was a rip off not the $300.00CAD price of this wonderful rifle. These are still available now here in Canada, but the price now is closer to $400CAD now.
Ya the price went way down but it'll go back up in a second
can you compare this with the ross rifle and point out rossy's design flaws?
Very cool.
Can you guys do a video on how it would be possible for a canadian to buy guns in the states?
Great info.
I cannot separate the stock from the receiver. Yes i removed the barrel bands and the tang/receiver screws. .
Thank you for this my out of 27 guns my k31 is my baby
you should do some spearfishing in the bahamas :D
I wish I could find a good one, Hey Eric, how much do you guys charge if you have any at the shop, if they can be shipped to another FFL as I don't want to travel far, Im hoping to find one, also may get a scope for it, been saveing and can't find any here in ohio, and classic arms is out of them.
I have one thank You.
Any update on this project? Keen to see the plans...
Hi I have a question I turned 18 a couple weeks ago and want a gun I am looking at a Mossberg 715t .22 lr would you recommend that as a start just getting into guns of always wanted one I am semi knowledgeable about guns but would like to know what I can get into for around 500$ and get used to it and such and I live in California
Cool!
I would love a k31 - just have to get my licence
Great vid - but plz list what will make this a 1000 yd tack driver?
