    What happens when a country of watch makers and scientists make firearms?
    The K31 was a design originating from the 1911. Both the rifle and cartridge have century-old elements... and how does it perform to deliver a highly efficient .30 caliber, 174 grain projectile to longer distances?
    Ammunition used: Swiss military issued GP11 7.5x55mm, vintage 1981.

      Yes, only private shooting range provide targets under 300meters for the GP11. You can hit a coin at 300 meters with standard GP11, k11 long or k31, with the diopter. And with practice (lot) with iron sigth you can hit a 5cm target from that distance easily.

      Marc Monnerat 4” at 300 meters is world class shooting, most rifles even with scope and super accurate barrels are lucky to get under that. Best I’ve done with iron sights is 1” at 100, 2-3” at 200 and 6” at 300. But this is not with K31 Swiss rifle, with military AR15/M16A2 with accurized barrel

    The straight-pull action looks so smooth. I remember Ian from Forgotten Weapons saying that in general straight-pull is worse than bolt-action, but I would say this Swiss precision mechanism is the exception to the rule.

    • @kylemichaels3373
      @kylemichaels3373 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Straight pull is still bolt action. It's faster than anything short of the Enfield. The Swiss rifles 1889, 96/11, 1911, and K31 are very smooth as is the Canadian Ross. The 1895 Mannlicher is a bit rough getting the bolt open. The Ross, Mannlicher, and Schmidt-Rubin are the only successful military straight pulls. As far as modern straight pulls I think the Blaser is it. Other than .22 rimfires from Browning and whomever makes the Olympic guns for the Biathlon.

    • @robosoldier11
      @robosoldier11 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think the general question was "does a straight pull make that much of a difference performance wise" in comparison to regular bolt rifle mechanics. I would say it could potentially be an edge but I think from what I recall from ians video and just listening to other sources. In the grand scheme of things its really not that much of a benefit or makes that great of an impact. Not to say it doesn't provide some measurable difference but really it might be so minuscule it comes off more as an esthetic distinction then anything assuming good manufacturing on a regular bolt rifle action vs. straight pull.

    I live in Switzerland and I'm a member of the local shooting club in St. Gallen and even though lots of people nowadays prefer Stgw 90 (SIG 550) or the older Stgw 57 (SIG 510), my favorite gun to shoot is K31. One of the most popular rifle competitions across the country is to shoot 10 shots at 300 meters (~330 yards) using any of the Swiss service rifles (other guns are not allowed) and a special version of open sights called the diopter. I think the target is 1x1m and the maximum number of points you can score per shot is 10, meaning you hit a 10x10 cm or 4 inch circle from 330 yards. I'm pretty new to the local shooting club, but I was able to score 87 points with the diopter. My friend who is a complete beginner scored slightly over 70 points just with the stock open sights! He inherited the gun from his grandfather who got it from the army. The gun might be really old, but if you get one in a good condition, it still offers an excellent precision and accuracy. I've once asked in the store and they told me that a barrel in good condition can last around 2000 shots before being worn out. The guns are quite cheap here, around $300 for one in a good condition, but newly made barrels are also available, although they cost a whopping $1000 for some reason. There are also countless accessories for this gun that allow you to install a picatinny rail, new stocks (including polymer ones, alike for a sniper rifle) and who knows what else, but I don't know why would anyone do that to such a nice gun :D Thank you for making such a nice video!

The K11 iron sights start at 300m, so it goes as follows: aim 30cm below point of impact at 100m, 40cm below at 200m and 30cm below at 300m. If you cannot find GP11 ammo, you want to try lapua 155gr scenar-L, these rifles love longer bullets, forget 168gr SMK or 174gr FMJ. So, I was surprised that there were no further comments made on this fine rifle. The shooter was not seasoned and used to this run. The misses looked obviously due to shooter error and not to the rifle. This rifle will outshoot you! I keyhole and shot groups touching at 100 yds for me! ALso, try one of the scoped St. Marie mounts or the drill and tapped for a scope... makes this very interesting! Swiss Ammo is consistent !

      Sure, I suppose. We've shot a lot of different rifles and this is a pretty decent result. I'm also familiar with the sighting system with similar systems (Finn M39 and Swede M96) outshooting this.
      At the end of the day, I'm sure that there are many who can shoot it better than I, and I look forward to consuming their content.

    These are great rifles. I have had a few of them until Norma ammo got so expensive. I bought my fist one for $19 at an army surplus store. Got my second 20 years later for $30. One was an infantry rifle. A long sucker. Then I got a carbine model. I liked it the best. But I didn’t like that long trigger pull.

    I took my scoped k31 out this weekend and shot 700 yards (my furthest ever) like nothing on a 1/2 D28 plate (14x9). Maybe a 75% hit rate in 10-15 mph wind. Such a sweet shooting rifle. Hand load with a 178gr bullet going 2400 fps. Had about a 22moa come up. Next time I will see if I can try 1000. I feel like this thing could hit pretty easy maybe 50% and the misses are just barely. Maybe a 20" going would hit every single time. I love this rifle! I also shot my m24/47 at 450 with irons and was nailing it nearly every time. I want to get a scope mount for that now too. But a $450 optics rig on a $200 rifle is a little silly haha

    This is my favorite rifle to shoot. I picked it up for dirt cheap, and bought 2 battle-packs worth of ammo. Still got about 600 rounds left of gp11 ammo. I've had a few 3/4" groups at 100 yards that surprised the hell out of me in a very pleasing way. To me it just feels right when I'm shooting it. It's heavy, but really doesn't feel that much while shouldered.
    I took it out gopher hunting for the fun of it. Ya, gophers don't hold together that well under a 174g bullet lol. Even a few close misses would send the gopher flying just from the impact lol. I got a clamp on scope sight for it. It's off set, and surprisingly holds zero good for the way it clamps on. Plus I can still use the open sights with it. Great rifle.

    • @kylemichaels3373
      @kylemichaels3373 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 7.5x55 with a 174gr bullet has basically the same ballistics as a .308 even though the case of the 7.5x55 is a fair bit larger. If your bullets are whizzing past gophers I guarantee the blast is not hurting them. That's simply impossible as proven by Demolition Ranch's video of a .50BMG going through a house of cards and not affecting it. Now if your hitting low the dirt could definately be hitting the gophers.
