Now in my 50s here's my advice for people in their 20s and 30s... have a long term plan to buy a house. Come up with a 5-7 year plan and stick to it. Right now we are seeing housing prices drop. All this time you should be saving up 50k so you can put a down payment on a house in the 200s... yes, there are still lots of affordable places to live in the US, so be willing to move around. Buy a house, fix your housing cost, and you will be on the road to success. Renting = losing. A fixed housing cost, paid for vehicles, 10-15% of your money going toward your retirement, staying away from dumb debt, and you won't end up in your 50s and 60s bitter, with nothing... old and poor. I would emphasize taking chances and getting that experience while your young, while also putting aside $ for your own retirement as early as you can. Get a degree and work a profession that pays a lot of money. I was raised by a single mom who made $25k a year as a teacher's aid and now I make 6 figures as an engineer. Programming doesn't even require a degree to make 6 figures. Doctor, lawyer, psychiatrist/therapist, vet, dentist, oil/gas, travel nurse. There's so many things that can basically guarantee you to become a multi-millionaire with no risk.
