If you have oil forcing its way out of the fill tubes and breathers, that is more of an indication that you have excessive crankcase pressure rather than vacuum. Could be the result of excessive blow-by more than anything. This can also explain he smoking if you don't have well sealed oil control rings
@@kevinworks2145 yea that is also a possibility, but the pressure building up in there is a sign. that is unless the cam cover is actually filling up all the way and overflowing out of the caps. Easy enough to test for, just see if there is pressure building up in there or not. If it's filling up then yes, you could be correct and it's not draining. Restricting the oil supply flow is probably ill advised either way.
The oily exhaust might just be a result of the engine running in, and by the time you had the second solution in place it had run in more. Might be interesting te reverse the mod and see if the oily smoke comes back. (Because I don't like the idea of reducing oil pressure to the engine...)
Come to think of it, it could be that the flow is too high since it's designed to have a turbo, that would pull a good bit of oil flow from the engine, so with no turbo mounted, it could actually be that it's flooding the head.
@@stevenbmw850 was just thinking the same, if there's not a decent path for the oil to drain back into the sump it wouldn't take much for it to flood the head
I know it would be an absolute nightmare to synchronize and tune but individual carbs like an old motorcycle engine would be a really cool modification

one flaw I see is how the radiator is mounted. usually in vehicles, (and water-cooling setups in computers) you want the radiator, or reservoir to be higher than the block. Its so air bubbles dont congregate inside the engine block they congregate in the top of the radiator, or the reservoir. This may be reducing its cooling area, I cant tell if there is a reservoir inside the metal dash thing, but from where you add the coolant by taking off that fitting it doesn't appear so.
If you increase the mass of the flywheel you could have minimum rpm under 2000 You can also develop an electronic rev limiter to make sound more interesting reaching them
If you want to see how a real.250cc 4 cylinder is built, get yourself the engine from a Honda cbr250rr from 1988-92. Absolutely bullet proof reliable 18,000rpm daily commute that live on no maintainance and make 40hp on cheap low octane fuel. Never leak or burn oil
The cam belt flex is causing a delay in cam timing. Where one side stretches and causes the delay. A thicker belt will tidy that up. But I'm loving this design. And with no lubrication issues it's begging for a turbo small enough to add some scaled boost. Really would like to see dyno results from that configuration.
3:29 - That "Oil Temp" gauge looks like the needle should be mounted in the center like the R.P.M. gauge. How the heck are you supposed to read that? Assuming the needle actually does move.
Awesome! Sounds very sport bikey! I vote that you make a four into one header and a Yoshimura type pipe setup! I bet it would sound amazing! If there’s anyone out there who can do it, it’s Johnny!
As a quick test grease up the cams and block off the oil supply to the valve cover., if smoke dissapears you know its the guides pulling oil. Tiny orings for valve stem seals on the inlet valves could be possible too.
Would’ve been nice if they engineered some sort of valve stem seals for the price of that thing that us consumers don’t get for free and have to pay out of pocket for but other than that this is probably the coolest engine I’ve seen on this channel to date
This is one of the nicer ones for sure, the oil pump lubricating the head is great. They just need to reduce the pressure like you’ve done. I wonder if the bottom end is splash lubricated or if they managed to get oil pumped into the rod bearings and such
He actually increased pressure by restricting the flow. Like how you make a garden hose shoot water further while reducing total water flow by restricting the nozzle.
??? Do the pistons have oil rings on the bottom of the piston as oil shouldn't be running into thru the ceats cause it would only blow out and you would have excessive blow by ???
So a question come to mind....with everything at scale, why do you think they idle so high....a normal engine idles about 800 to 1200 rpms...I saw this and most other scale engines idle at about 2500 to 3000 rpms....just curious.....another awesome video, thanks
Scaling down the engine lowers the rotational mass that keeps the engine running at low RPM. This requires a higher idle to stay running. They use heavy flywheels to help some, but it would take a very large one to drop them to full size idle rpms.
Maybe the piston rings need to wear in before they get a good seal! Also did you run the camshafts in? I'm assuming that needs to be done just like you would on a full size engine.....
Johnny how well do you think a turbo would work on this 😐 I mean it can obviously rep higher and you can make a supercharge like how you tried idk if it was you or someone else with the four cylinder
Yeah, I saw the turbo setup they had been designing. Would be quite cool if it works. But that's going to need some very precision engineering if it is going to work right, which would make it pretty expensive to make. Dunno, but I guess we'll see. Might still be kind of cool even if it doesn't actually make any boost. On a static engine anyway.
Hey Johnny! Our team has been working day & night to develop an engine for cheaper prices to allow anyone to get a chance at the hobby! How does this sound 😏 16 cylinders 15,000 to 20,000 rpm 13 Horsepower… Stay tuned!
I can’t help noticing, with all of the engines you show, that the carburettors are always very poor quality. They are either very basic model carburettors or the type used on chain saws and so on. Have considered making your own carburettor? It would be a fascinating series if it was possible for you.
as a tech i would love to own a few of these engines but at the price they sell them i can have a real engine on a stand . maybe one day if i win the loto
Tiny turbo you say? You definitely need to test one of those little guys. And I'm not just saying that because I want to put one on a 50cc pit bike. . .
This is one engine where the starter motor sound is as good as the engine itself. Very nice specimen
right i thought it was a recording playing like one of those cheap battery operated motors at first
I bet the starter puts out more power too
@@gregorholmes1837 these engines don't have a practical purpose, so it's fine I guess
A specimen is a hearb for cooking bro 😂😂😂
@AduRoper let me use terms bro. A fine spice up for the youtube comment section

I was thinking the oil return would need to opened up if to much oil is sitting on top.

Very likely because it uses o rings
+1 for oil drain issues and ring blow by
Make that +2. I wouldn’t advise restricting the oil like that, you could literally be starving the valvetrain of oil.
The garage has got to be immaculate with all of your tools and engines, dream garage 🙏
I mean my garage has all the tools(probably) it’s just finding them that’s the problem lol.

It wouldn't reduce oil pressure, the opposite will happen, but it will reduce oil volume/flow which is a big problem. Less cooling and lubrication.
this was to the cam lobes/valves, not the ENTIRE engine..
Yeah if the problem actually is too much flow and not a ring issue, the better solution would be to increase drainage instead of reducing flow.
Come to think of it, it could be that the flow is too high since it's designed to have a turbo, that would pull a good bit of oil flow from the engine, so with no turbo mounted, it could actually be that it's flooding the head.

That oil temperature gauge though. Needle at the bottom but markings are radial. China 😁
at least it wasn't me that noticed that crap.
Always look forward to seeing your videos.
I know nothing about that motor, but it seems like it needs a pressure regulator for the oil pump, outside of a full redesign that is.
Yup, its a worthless toy, this design should not be used for anything you can't fit in your pocket.
Please give us a teardown of this engine. This one looks really good! Actually formidable oil pump, and oil supply to the top end!!
I was day dreaming about how to turbo it most the video, then the end said that its in the works.

@@toolbaggers that's true, the reduced flow would fix the problem then, the head doesn't drain oil fast enough to keep up with the flow rate it seems

What about adding some valve seal on valve stem?

Put seals on the valves mate. Cut some rings from fuel line.
