      Our justice system requires that a person has a right to legal counsel for a defense. If you accept the job, you do your best to help the defendant or else. I don't know how someone could be strong enough to to do such a job, but our legal system couldn't function without it.

      @@genkatqltr737 I agree. The defense lawyer is there to ensure the accused understands the process and is able to present their defense. The main purpose is justice by enabling the court to hear both sides and ascertain the truth. Especially in criminal justice it should never be about winning or losing, it should always be about truth, justice and fair trial. If we deny people the right to defense counsel because we assume their guilt before their fair trial we would undermine the whole concept of a fair trial.
      I would have no difficulty in acting as defense counsel for anyone accused, whether they are innocent or guilty. The job is ensuring the trial is fair, that all evidence is heard, and making sure the verdict can not be questioned due to failures of due process.

      @Elvenpath ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Finn here. 12 years is not automatic release, it's the minimum they have to serve, if they get sentenced life in prison. At that point they can get in front of the judge and possibly be paroled. If they are deemed not fit to be let go they will stay in prison. Right now there is a prisoner serving life who will most likely never be released. The dude is a literal serial killer, who has killed more every time he's been released. Latest sentence was life and it's very unlikely he will ever get back out because he has proved that he will just keep on killing people.

      If someone kills anyone, especially kids, how can they justify 15/20 years to life? I don't care if they learn a lesson or are deemed to be of no threat in 15-20 years, they took a life, they should not get theirs back.
      The death sentence is not the answer either, that takes the suffering away from the killer, they should be kept in the worst max security prisons, with the worst of the worst, to live with that and what they have done to get there.

      In the UK what you call Life Without Parole we call 'A Whole Life Order' but they are rarely given out. A double child killer who's motivation was sexual still only got 40 years. That said, the chances of parole for such a criminal are very remote and he'll almost certainly never get out. There are still people in prison here many years after they have completed their minimum terms. There are currentley only something like 200 prisoners serving whole life orders in the UK that range from crimes of killing multiple police officers to serial killers. But in real terms many more who aren't on the list will never get out.

      @@AB-80X she kinda did plan it though or at least was a major contributor in planning it. She used a dating app to set up the guy and they ambushed him when he showed up. Maybe it wasn't her idea but she was a big part of the crime. 11 years is about right perhaps but 20 wasnt excessive. She's incredibly lucky he survived being shot or she'd have been convicted of murder. She and her Mom apparently believed that a plea agreement meant she didn't go to prison which is why they freaked out like that. Being dumb enough to think you can be a big part of an armed carjacking where someone gets shot and not go to prison is astounding but that's what they thought.

    Well, don't you think that a life sentence should be for life, not 12 years nor 30. It is called *life sentence* for a reason 💀.

      I think a life sentence is able to be negotiated/lowered over time. If the judge wants to for sure keep anyone in prison for the remainder of their life, they could just sentence them to something like 100 years or so

    • @SashaMkai
      @SashaMkai 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I think it means how can you live with yourself trying to get someone off for doing what they did. I know it's their job but to be honest I couldn't be a criminal defense lawyer defending someone who killed for any reason other than protecting their family or self defense. I also believe that anyone no matter the age, sex or relationship to the victim should be immediately put to death for killing a child.

    • @arcangeloblues

      I fully agree except for the death penalty. I believe that living inside a jail for the rest of their lives would be the best punishment.

      I didn’t say that it was easy, cuz it’s one of the hardest job if it comes to your mental state. You can help them by somehow giving them less time, showing the judge that it’s a mental problem etc. There are ale lot of ways of doing that, weather you agree with that or not

      Sometimes, if they say "life in prison, no parole" or "Remain in prison for the duration of your natural life" then yes, but otherwise the court itself cant decide, so at the x years mentioned "x years to life" they'll review your case and deem you ready to go back to society or if you need to stay for a longer period or for your life.
