Absolutely! I saw them as the OBC replacement cast in 1980, and they were so amazing that they could have opened the show when it premiered in 1978! Dorothy Loudon was a force of nature-forceful, vulnerable, and without equal!
Alan, Thank you so much for posting this! It brings back wonderful memories for me! Years ago, I saw Sweeney Todd in NYC with Dorothy Loudon and George Hearn. The production was magical and entrancing! I'll never ever forget it!
Absolutely amazing. It is however, extremely odd to see them completely cranked to 100 performing these songs. But they look NOTHING like they do on stage. No makeup no nothing.
Miss Loudon was a performer, not actually a legit singer, which is why she is struggling in the performance, above (Sondheim is beyond her technical vocal abilities, but she pulls it off with her stellar performing). George Hearn is a powerhouse.
Even though "By the Sea" is sort of a throwaway song that doesn't really move the plot, most composers would give their whole career to write something so great. Mrs. Lovett is shooting her shot, but Sweeney couldn't be more disinterested or distracted.
as much as I adore Dorothy Loudon as a performer she was never a team player..Lansbury did the role as part of an ensemble..with Dorothy I always get the feeling she wants to steal the scene so badly she can't contain herself..maybe there lies some of the reason she never really became a star ?
I’d much rather listen to this woman than Angels Lansbury. I’m sorry, but that televised stage version of Sweeney Todd with Lansbury is absolutely terrifyingly, disturbing and stomach-churning inducing. I had to stuff tampons into my ears bc they were bleeding from listening.
@Jim Stark I"m not sure that "Terrifying, disturbing and stomach churning" is a bad thing. For Mrs. Lovett that is a fantastic, dead on encapsulation of her.
No one sings like Hearn. Amazing. His acting of the song is also superior to anyone else. What an amazing talent. The two of them are fabulous.
The great Loudon! She used all the ingredients everyone else did and somehow cooked up these utterly unique creations.
She is so brilliant! They have such great chemistry!
How I loved Dorothy Loudon in George Hearn in SWEENEY TODD. She was absolutely brilliant in the role and he was terrific.

I've seen Hearn in over 8 different performance sof various plays, musicals and concerts, always standing orations
What a great introduction to the number by Merv Griffin. I miss his shows!
George Hearn 💯😍
It’s the way Sandy Duncan just SHOWS UP for me.
George Hearn is the King of Sweeneys. He has no peer.
100% 😂 He is King George! An inspiration to every baritone for 50 years. True legend
This is the same jacket George wore during rehearsals of the national tour
Amblrr
Absolutely amazing.

DOROTHY LOUDON is enjoyable an likeable talent that should have her own TV Show, she is a real singer an ANGELA LANSBURY is a ACTRESS

She had appeared in shows in the 60s; and much later she did a pilot, but it was not picked up.
@Susan Van Cott don’t like Dorothy performance at all saw Angela perfect for the role
Angela Lansbury was brilliant in this part but this is genius. She IS deranged.
Agreed!
Lo❤❤😂

Loudon replaced the original star Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett while Hearn replaced Len Cariou from Mar 04, 1980 - Jun 29, 1980.
🙄🙄

They look like Julie Andrews and James Caan. Haha
