I knew Dorothy and got to see her perform many times. She lived for her time on stage - she lived for the audience. Her combination of talent and humor is now a lost art. It's good to see this video and remember. I once asked Dorothy if she had a favorite part or performance and she surprised me when she said, "Sweeney Todd." She had replaced Angela Lansbury on Broadway. She always knew she could sing, she could be funny - she knew how to entertain. But, with Sweeney she got to prove she could act.... and, sing Sondheim. God Bless, Dorothy.
I saw Dorothy in Annie on BROADWAY New Years Day MATINEE in 1978. Her performance was wonderful, great comedy, great singing and dancing, great timing, very memorable. Her talent was high voltage and top notch, even at her then age of 52 and she had been doing the musical for more than a year. The show was great... it had everything a stage struck kid would love. When the show was over, it was dark out and the city was covered white in snow. It was one of my most magical days I can ever recall. It lightly snowed in the musical, as well.
