Sonic the Hedgehog[a] is a video game series and media franchise created by the Japanese developers Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara for Sega. I love how Shadow is being animated in this movie. You can just tell he's driven by pain and loss. He isn't outright evil or malicious like Robotnik. He's hurt.

If I had to predict, perhaps Shadow is “mysteriously” awakened and released, and is then revealed to have been Gerald hacking into the system.
Maybe. But Agent Stone was the one who learned of the existence of Project Shadow at the end of the second film. I wouldn't be surprised if he relayed that information to Eggman, who then sets Shadow free remotely.

@@Gundam4 I did, but the sonic movie 3 is not following the sa2 story, it takes some elements from it but is definitely different
I think the wait felt longer because the first two Sonic movies released in the first halves of 2020 and 2022 but we're having to wait until the end of 2024 to get the third movie so it's a much longer break between films than the break between the first and second movies.
They were released a week earlier than this one grow up

And not having GUN mistake Sonic for Shadow Is probably a good thing, this gives them the opportunity to get Sonic and and Metal confused, in a future movie. So it doesn't feel repetitive.

I am almost 100 percent certain that it will be Gerald that does it. I think Gerald is just playing Eggman to somehow get access to ARK.

I wouldn't be surprised if he meets Gerald, double crosses Sonic to work with him instead, and then turns against Gerald in the end once he finds out what his true plan is.
Thats why i love these films, there not trying to copy the stories of the games, they have there own identity, if they just copied the games it would be pretty lazy.

I feel like they're going to be adapting the loose outline of SA2 and not the specifics.
I fully believe that disc-shaped ship we see (and later see Tails jumping out of) is the ARK, but instead of it being an orbital space-station, it's a flying research facility.
Shadow says in the trailer "when we're done, nothing will be left," so I assume his plan is still to somehow use the ARK to destroy the planet. The black hole could either be the Eclipse Cannon preparing to fire or maybe it's the cause of the ARK's crash course to Earth.
I think Gerald will ultimately wind up being the true villain. I think he is secretly working with Shadow the entire time and, once Shadow changes his mind, Gerald will continue the plan.

I just realized, Shadow did a "Do I look like I need your power?" moment to Knuckles
Something I noticed in the Trailer was that Sonic seems to be getting more aggressive as the trailer goes on and with that scene of Tom and sonic saying “you haven’t changed in here” and all the parallel to Shadow and with him on the loose he could push himself to become much more serious to stop him
I think the line, 'you haven't changed in here' is more for the fans. It was Tom's way of telling the audience that despite the way Sonic has had character development in the movies, he's still Sonic.

Eggman and Shadow don't need to be on teams to justify Rouge's involvement/existence in Movie 3's story. That's honestly just common sense.
If I had to guess, Rouge could possibly in a Shadow spin-off series.
It still wouldn't really make much sense unless G.U.N has been messing around in the multiverse between the movies. Rouge didn't need much explanation in SA2 because prior to Izuka's many bad decisions, mobians and humans both inhabiting Earth was just a normal thing for the game setting. Here though, it wouldn't make much sense for Rouge to be on Earth, much less working for G.U.N. when every mobian character has to jump through hoops just to end up on Earth.
@@mooseman3027 By that point it's too late. The movie and its hype has already lived and been experienced. Talk about showing up after the party. And then it's disappointing because it doesn't lead into the movie, and Rouge debuting with lower budget CGI is... yeah.
@@wakkaseta8351 Rouge doesn't need to be working for GUN to show up, though. That's the thing. I think its perfectly justifiable for her to easily show up just to try and grab the Chaos Emeralds because she discovered their existence and tracked them down to Earth. She is a treasure hunter before a government spy after all.
So Rouge I think actually can easily fit into this film and show up with justifiable reasoning. For a character like Amy, you need to completely rewrite her backstory to justify her appearance. It could still be done, and she's the best candidate to "snap Shadow out" of his condition. But you do have to make significant changes to drop her in, which makes her harder to justify than Rouge.

I don’t mind Amy and Rouge not being in the movie… and that’s because I want them to be naturally included into the movie universe…
Right now having more characters for the amount of time we have for a movie would just feel like Cameo’s rather than main characters.
We also have to take into account that this story is different than the games… there are only a few plot point taken from the games… they don’t follow the main game story at all and that’s not a bad thing.

Yk they could’ve just wrote the story in a way that would make them feel natural and actual main characters right. It’s like the avengers franchise but if only 1-2 of them show up in each movie (bad example ik but u get my point). I think it’s crazy how we have more human characters than Sonic characters in the movie franchise. This would’ve been the PERFECT movie to introduce rouge in since she was also introduced in sa2 just like shadow. If she appeared anywhere else it would just feel weird.

Amy’s probably gonna be in the 4th movie along with metal sonic. In the trailer sonic gives eggman a quill, which he’ll probably use to make metal sonic, who’ll likely be the villain of the movie. Each movie is based off of a different sonic game, so I think the next one will be Sonic CD, which is when Metal Sonic and Amy were first introduced.

I'm happy to see it's not just an Adventure 2 adaptation, but it just using elements from that game to make a new story. While having Amy or Rouge would've been cool, I think the story can still be really good and use what's established to make a strong story. I'll be waiting for the film to come out to decide whether these choices were for the better or not, but conceptually, I appreciate it doing its own thing like the first two movies.
It's just that the implications of waiting for what will probably be 6 years just to have at least one female character from the games are not great
The adventure games are peak sonic storytelling so i am a bit sad it they won't go full adaption, but the fact that my GOAT Shadow is here i really don't care and i know they'll do his story justice.

Sonic 4 being inspired by Sonic CD or Heros is such a cool idea. Yeah Shadow is the most popular character but If they put Metal Sonic in the spotlight it would make so many fans happy!
Just keep in mind on the trailer that we see sonic gives Dr.Robotnik his blue quills, which means that Dr.Robotnik could possibly make a whole entire army robots and build up metal sonic at the post credit scene.

So it's coming out of the water and rising into the sky to leave Earth's orbit. Sonic, Knuckles and Tails are all basically racing to catch up to it before it gets too far away from them. This is where you see Sonic on the bridge and Knuckles on the clock.

Could Gerald be some sort of hallucination as well? I remember S3 concept art from a year ago featuring his skeleton/corpse inside a Project Shadow lab. It coooooould technically be possible for Ivo to be imagining his long lost grandpa after visiting his lab? Would explain his... Unorthodox personality, Ivo would have just been projecting an older version of himself that just as crazy but also proud of him (seen from the hug) since no one else ever was proud of him (Jim Carrey confirmed in interviews for S1 that this Ivo is VERY love deprived from childhood). Just a theory idk.

0:24 to 0:50 My whole issue with that is the fact that Sonic 3 has major competition that same day with the Mufasa movie while Sonic 2 didn't and Mufasa has already released two trailers before Sonic 3 release theirs, so I felt their were some reasons for concern. At least to me

I think that Rouge in this universe will be searching for the Master Emerald and that's how she will become a partial villain.
Rouge is way easier to justify showing up than Amy, yeah. If either of them show up, its probably Rouge. And I think at least one will, because we don't have any female Sonic characters yet. There's also at least one other woman cast with no known role, so that's a thing, too.
Rouge just needs to know about the Master Emerald and have some reason to be able to track it. Perhaps the Master Emerald powers going off in the prior game allowed her to activate her trackers and follow it to Earth.
they simplified the story for modern movie going audiences. i've been through this before and i'm comfortable with it by this point. No movie can be exactly like a book/game story 100%, you have to take liberties. i'm all for this plot, not too many characters to follow, a good villain, whats more to ask for? sure none of the jokes land but its still a kids movie at the end of the day.

"Why would GUN mistake Sonic for Shadow?"... they didn't. GUN wanted to cover up Project Shadow and seeing how similar Sonic and Shadow looked, they used Sonic as a scapegoat while trying to take control of the situation as they don't want the public to find out about the tragic incident of Space Colony Ark.
Plus the dialogue was still from the time Shadow was "Talos" that looked VERY similar to Sonic and they didn't update their scripts.
Movie 3 doesn't have to do that as GUN was recently founded and they didn't know anything about the Ark and Project Shadow so they come to Sonic for help this time.
Also, I think the reason they choose Tokyo is because they wanted something natural to cameo the Chao from the series as something Japan would do with the Pizzeria setup they got.
We don't even know about the scapegoat thing tbh, that's just a theory.

The dialogue was definitely finalized by the time they had settled on a final design.
Not to mention that Shadow has the same quills as Super Sonic and Sonic has been seen changing forms. It can be easy for someone to assume that Shadow is just another one of Sonic's forms.
I think it's good that the Sonic movies are taking things in a slightly different direction when it comes to adapting big moments, which means it can still surprise old and new fans watching the movie's for the 1st time

I actually really appreciate this universe for what it is. I love that they're taking their time and planting little nuggets here and there. It reminds me of phase 1 of the MCU. It was a nice treat for fans and general audiences and it took its time to naturally build to the big purple space man and 26 main characters. So many cibematic universes wanna jump to endgame so bad and thats just not how it works.

I think a piece of plot that's missing that was in the trailer is Sonic specifically referring to Shadow as an alien life form. 👀
Which further supports the theory that the space colony ark is still a thing in the movie. I personally don’t see why they would tamper with that critical piece of shadows backstory. The scene with maria and shadow looking at each other is 100% on the ARK.
Unless Sonic isn't referring to Shadow at all, and the line is just being taken out of context. But then the question remains: Who is he referring to?
That said, since non-human species in these films have just been referred to as "aliens", it would make sense for Sonic to call Shadow that as well.
If Amy or Rouge don’t make it in, yes I’ll be a bit disappointed but it won’t spoil the movie for me completely. I’m not an SA2 purist or anything. That being said, I think i can still hold out a little hope since Paramount could edit them out of trailers and posters to avoid spoilers. Companies like Marvel have done this before and paramount themselves did it with Knuckles in that first sonic 2 poster so it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

You’ll never know, perhaps the Chao could make an actual appearance in CGI in the movies, and I do hope they do them justice and make them adorable
I’m 35 and I go into these movies as I would have as a kid, with that mindset and mentality I have been absolutely LOVING these films. Sure I’d like a more mature Sonic film but I accept that it isn’t made for that and that’s fine. I just am so excited to see the Blue Blur on the big screen and treated with the respect a 90’s kid would have loved at the time.

I completely agree with you, at least about Amy. Amy is basically the heart of the group of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy. Her absence sticks out like a sore thumb. And I'm not one of those people that care about female representation, I care about good character representation and I think Amy is a genuinely good character.
She’s probably gonna be in the 4th movie along with metal sonic. In the trailer sonic gives eggman a quill, which he’ll probably use to make metal sonic (most likely the villain of the 4th). Metal Sonic and Amy made their first appearances in Sonic CD, which is probably the game the next movie will be based off of.
I think Jeff omitted them cause of Hollywood making poorly written female characters and Jeff doesn't like the critics and misogynistic men complaining about females being in the movie.

How do you top the ULTIMATE LIFEFORM? Sure as hell not by making a metal copy of the hedgehog that almost died at his hands. I've got a theory about the plot and climax of the movie. I think that Shadow will go around the world in search of the Master Emerald to use its power to take revenge on GUN for Maria's death, but then starts to slowly realise that Maria would have wanted him to forgive GUN instead of destroying them, that's when Robotnik (with the help of Gerald Robotnik) decides to double cross Team Sonic and use the Emerald again to destroy Sonic and his friends, so Team Sonic and Shadow have to team up to try and beat him.
but they already had the master emerald in the last one? the second movie was based off sonic 2 and 3&k so i doubt it

What I really like about Shadow in this trailer, and maybe I just missed it even though I've watched it like 5 times now, but he is barely using that Lightning Effect that Sonic and Knuckles do. Yeah, his eyes glow and he has the trail behind him, but outside of maybe the final shot, he never has that effect in his quills, where a few of them light up.
And that's really interesting to me, because in Sonic 2, Sonic and Knuckles were using that all the time. Sonic even tries to use it again when Shadow takes out Knuckles, but Shadow doesn't. And he's still wiping the floor with them.
It's such an incredible way of visually showcasing how much more powerful Shadow is. Like it's telling the kids "You remember that awesome scene in the first movie where Sonic beats Robotnik? You remember the way Sonic and Knuckles kept clashing and how strong they both are? Now here's this guy who is so much stronger, he doesn't even need to power up to kick their tails."
Heck, that might be something he can't even do with his inhibitor rings on, which would be awesome to have those finally be used as more than just decorations.
I'm so hyped for this movie, and I really hope this delivers. I don't think they'll reboot after this since they said they wanted to expand upon this world after Sonic 2, even if they probably should just so they can have a new Eggman after Jim Carrey retires, but if they do go the route of leaving Earth and being fully animated, that could be really cool
... If they do stay on Earth and they don't at least set up Metal Sonic or Chaos by the end, I have absolutely no idea how they'd plan to continue this universe because there's not much left they could do here-
And probably metal Sonic turns on Eggman and Gerald causing Sonic and Shadow to team up at the end to defeat it

This is a wild theory, but the scene where robotnick wants sonics quill. What if he uses that to create metal sonic. Metal is usually depicted being even faster and able to copy abilities.

For everyone saying that they're fine with Amy not being in it, y'all do remember Amy was the one who had the heart to heart talk with Shadow that made him start to think differently about revenge, right? Yes they could just replace that with Sonic instead, or even Knuckles since Knuckles had to learn to forgive Sonic for his tribes extinction; but something about Amy being the one just hits differently.
They can do it with Maria herself. Either Shadow's memory returns, he sees a video recording, or even something with time travel.

The thing with Amy in SA2 is she doesn't have a lot to do outside of talk to Shadow, she kind of tags along and isn't even playable. Yeah she lets Sonic out of his cell, but Tails was on his way to do that too (they also never explain why/how she was on Prison Island lol). It's fine in the game for her to have a small role however because she's a pre-established character.
In the movies she would be a new character, so you have to dedicate some time to introducing her, and giving her enough screen time to have some narrative depth that a movie needs but a game can get away with not having - and you only have two hours to do that, plus everything else that will be in the movie. If they don't give her any build up it will come off as being badly written, bloating the movie for the sake of having another game character.
Maybe if they brought Amy in alongside Tails and Knuckles in the last film it could have worked, but for this film, as much as I want to see her it's for the best we don't Spider-Man 3 this and introduce her in a later movie.
Dont forget that in the games the chao were also highly marketable creatures
Honestly, Amy not being there is all right for the movie. Personally, I prefer it this way. I feel like they wrote Sonic's backstory like this for this purpose. I'm looking forward to some emotional and heart-to-heart conversation between Sonic and Shadow.
Edit: Btw, I didn't mean to start a war in the replies. I do love Amy (when she's written well), but Amy barely had a role in SA2 to begin with. They could easily replace the events that she did with other characters. Like her breaking Sonic out of Prison Island and redeeming Shadow. I just think that, with how they wrote Sonic for the movies (with his background and personality), he's the best character to redeem Shadow. I'm just thinking logically as a writer. I do want to see Amy in the movies just as much as anybody else, but the story just doesn't fit for her to be introduced and make an impact.

@@Ibalistic_hedge *The idea of* throwing him away to prop shadow up is concerning because it *potentially* sets the precedent of major supporting characters being tossed aside to make room for more characters in future movies.
It sucks to see previously important characters being wasted if they've become a fan favorite or still have more potential story opportunities. Or at the very least, *i just don't want those characters to be treated as a joke or as a punching bag* for the next character once they're no longer the star.

It's a bit of a hard pill to swallow, but the whole Amy and Rouge thing is an unfortunate symptom of the universe they've set up. Because this is a universe where talking anthropomorphic animals are the exception and not the norm, they'd need to come up with reasons to introduce them. Now you might say, "So what? Just make up a reason. Problem solved." But when a character is introduced with that much explanation or necessity to "break the mold," they're expected to play a big enough part that justifies them in particular being brought into the story instead of someone that wouldn't need nearly as much background. And if you really think about it, Sonic 3's cast is already getting kinda crowded. Not everyone's going to get their moment to shine if you keep adding more. And when one gets sidelined, people ask, " Why did you bother including them in the first place?" A movie where talking animals ARE the norm wouldn't have this problem because they don't require an explanation and can be featured in the movie without forcing them into a big role.
Personally what i would have done in the first palce is have the movie universe be a place where humans and anthro animals co exist thats what i think the game series should be doing since that whole "2 worlds thing" made the game timeline more confusing and complicated

They'd have to establish some sort of storyline where "more and more" anthro humans are coming to Earth for some reason to get Amy over. That could happen, perhaps, between films, but contextually, the only way to make Amy work now is tying her to project shadow (e.g. completely rewriting her backstory).
Rouge has a better justification; she can have discovered the Chaos Emeralds and Master Emerald. Perhaps she was even tracking Knuckles, and it just took longer for her to arrive on Earth. So her goal is just like in the OG game; finding the Chaos Emeralds. That's the best logical reason to include her.

Here's my take on the story, Shadow kicks GUN's ass, then Team Sonic, they team up with Robotnik, they chase Shadow who tries to avenge Maria's death with some plan that Dr. Gerald Robotnik has for him. Eggman thinks this is impossible since he is dead, but upon realizing that he is alive, he is manipulated by his grandfather (or father, in this version) to betray Sonic and the others. This is pure speculation, but I think Gerald will be somewhat cruel to Robotnik, mocking him for all his failed attempts to beat Sonic and for being inferior in general. I can even imagine a part where Gerald expresses sadness and regret that it was Maria who died, and not Jim Carrey Robotnik.
This is where I think two things will happen, taking into account that it is Jim Carrey's last role, Robotnik will betray his father and sacrifice himself so that Sonic and the others can save the world from the fall of the Ark, or the Biolizard, idk, I don't think Shadow is going to be 100% a villain, like in SA2, but rather an accessory for Gerald Robotnik's revenge. And inevitably the death of one of the human characters, probably Tom, mostly because some say his grandfather/dad is the one who got rid of Maria.

While I’m sad that Amy or Rouge don’t get to appear in this Movie or that my Choices to Voice the Ultimate Lifeform Jason Griffin, Robert Pattinson, or Hayden Christenesen weren’t picked and the Fact we waited for this Trailer for Months, I have to say this is a Great Trailer that shows Shadow as a Threat, will Challenge Sonic’s Beliefs, looks Great, and Keanu actually did a Great Shadow Voice while looking Badass and Treating and Jim is slowly becoming the Mad Doctor we know and Love in the Game with a Different Take and is also going to play Robotnik’s Grandfather Gerald Robotnik, I do wonder how will this Movie will affect the Film Franchise going forward but I can’t wait to see this Movie.

i think a fitting end for this movie would be team sonic leaving earth to explore other planets. itd wrap a nice bow on the trilogy while also leaving room for more adventures in a more game accurate universe for the future of the franchise

Yes there is. GUN has existed for like 5 minutes in the films, and aliens are EXTREMELY RARE on Earth right now. We have seen no indication of any increase of more "aliens" in recent years either, so the idea that Rouge and Amy exist by now on Earth is slim-to-none, they need a justification to _come_ to Earth instead. Which Rouge does have, because she can come seeking the Chaos Emeralds, but Amy would basically need to have a completely rewritten backstory to justify her appearance.
Amy literally only did one thing in the entirety of SA2 and was basically useless in that game except that _one moment_ which can be done by just about anybody. And I know people consider it a critically important role for Amy, but trying to force her into the film at this point is nigh impossible without, again, completely rewriting her backstory.
I mean she could be in the movie, she could just show up in the middle, and they’re keeping it a secret to surprise us, I feel like that is definitely possible.
I think Shadow’s: “You’re a colorful bunch”, wasn’t just a knock on how sickeningly optimistic and hopeful they are as heroes. Could’ve also been a joke by the writers on how much more vibrant and colorful the cgi characters have become since the first film. Some cartoon characters with more realism, tend to have their colors muted.
I still hope Tails gets his glow up moment like SA2 but since the story won’t take everything from SA2, it looks like Tails is just gonna be Sonic’s lab dog again which would be quite disappointing but I get it. It’s Sonic n Shadow spotlight but still hope Tails n Knuxs are done well. Also hope they don’t make Gerald too goofy like they done with Knuxs’ chief n make Gerald more complex, especially after Maria’s death n relationship with his grandson
I feel like Sonic lending some of his power to Robotnik might lead into him building Metal Sonic in the next movie, which means that they might introduce Amy Rose at that point?
I know Sonic CD is way older than SA2, but I don't see a problem if they're doing stuff in a different order for the movies. Maybe the next movie will involve Robotnik going to Sonic's world with Metal Sonic, and Little Planet makes an appearance along with Amy, except in this version, Knuckles, Tails and Shadow are also there.
It’s a shame that Amy won’t be here. The first two movies likely got a bunch of kids to buy Frontiers, which would be their introduction to her and now those who liked her appearance won’t get the gratification in the movie series.

The problem really was just that we kept on getting rumors of a new trailer and we get nothing on the date the rumor says.
It caused a lot of us to worry if this even is going to turn out well.

I thought it looked awesome and was everything I wanted out of it. I’m gonna enjoy it to the fullest. No doubt in my mind that this’ll be my movie of the year.
It's highly unlikely, but since Gerald is alive, it means the opportunity to execute him is there. Again, highly unlikely, but it would be pretty ballsy of them if they did.
I'm just saying that considering the lore, Gerald is NOT going to last past this movie. My theory is that the sacrificial role for Shadow in the game may instead be given to Gerald here in the movie.
