He’s German! It’s a cultural difference! So much enthusiasm! Nothing wrong with his style! I always love him! Ross came across phoney with that crispy, dry, frizzy permed Afro that was not even his natural hair! That fuzzy mess was a perm!

He was conscripted into the German army during WWII. He stated he didn’t believe in the war his country was waging. And he was bitter about it.

  • @rewired1108

He never sounds angry. This is the best way of inspiring oneself, when the motivation is lacking. With this in mind, I have never been short of lifting my own spirits, enthusiasm and motivation, when I have had very little desire to be creative. I am a writer, a painter and musician (composer, conductor and concert pianist).
I only found Bill Alexander under a year ago, and he has done something that no one else did to me, given me the self drive needed under all circumstances. I only wish I had seen these when the were originally aired - I would have been about 16, at the time.

In 1982, Bob Ross was lovingly and excitedly given the blessing of William Alexander to take up the mighty paintbrush and carry on teaching the wet on wet technique that Alexander had made popular to the modern world. It is an old technique that has been used by artists for centuries. Bob carried on for Alexander and the world came to love Bob Ross as well as William Alexander. There was no bitterness between the two lovable men. Alexander was overjoyed to pass the show on to his protege Bob Ross. He did so joyfully and publicly.

Read Bill Alexander’s Biography and you’ll gain insight to him. He shares his technique with Bob, Annette, Andrea and several others (I’m lucky to have been certified by Bill as well). I met Bob at a trade show in D.C. and he was as nice (and talk) and talented as you see in the screen. He and Annette (and their spouses build the Bob Ross company one workshop and demo at a time. I was lucky to join the Ross instructor ranks by invitation. Both of these men brought art into an average household sharing their techniques and knowledge. I hope y’all pick up a brush and make some happy trees with the magic of painting.

    • @Claude-Eckel

You must have read the wrong biography of another Bill Alexander, maybe a politician or somebody. Get the facts straight, man, and stop spreading this horseshit!
Ross company is a money machine of non-artists teaching other non-artists a technique how to paint, making millions of dollars with selling how-to books, videos (back in the days) and oil paint, all boldly embossed with Ross's name andthe thieve's face. He was anything but a collaborator. They were bitter rivals because Ross stole everything from Bill! Company together my arse! I don't give a damn if you claim to have ever met Bill, nobody can verify it anyway. I met him too, and I can even even speak his mother tongue. So, less misunderstandings during a conversation, see?
*Here comes what is only relevant to me, not what self-described so called **_'certified'_** these and that who had allegedly met him or her claim on the internet, quote:*
_"Finally, Mr. Ross found an art instructor in California who could show him exactly how to paint a tree, using the speedy, foolproof "wet on wet" method. "I took one class and I went crazy," he said. "I knew this was what I wanted to do." Mr. Ross eventually set up his own traveling art school in Florida. His business took off in 1982._
*_He declined to name the teacher who first inspired him, explaining somewhat uneasily, "Now he is our major competitor."_*
*_In fact, the rivalry between Mr. Ross and his former mentor, William Alexander, is bitter._*_ Mr. Alexander, 76, a Bavarian-born painter who _*_has his own painting show on a public television station in Orange County, Calif., a paint supply business and a line of books and videos,_*_ spoke of his former protege in the tones Thomas Couture might have used to describe the young pupil who outstripped him, Edouard Manet._
*_"He betrayed me,"_*_ he said in his strong German accent. _*_"I invented 'wet on wet.' I trained him and he is copying me -- what bothers me is not just that he betrayed me, but that he thinks he can do it better." "_* Unquote.

Bill choose Bob Ross to take over for him. I remember watching that day in 1982 when Bill Alexander passed the 'mighty paint brush' to Bob Ross. I cried because I had enjoyed watching Bill for so long. I didn't know that Bob was going to capture the hearts of millions the way he did over the years. They were both wonderful artists that inspired so many to pick up a paintbrush and learn to enjoy the art of painting. May they both rest in peace and know how much they were both appreciated and loved.
Bob Ross did not steal the show or the wet on wet technique from Bill. Bob picked up where Bill left off and greatly honored Bill by carrying on Bills wet on wet painting. Bob did Bill proud.

@@nataliaturner4845Absolutely right. I use Bob as an anti-anxiety tool as he relaxes me so much I can't keep my eyes open!! Bill is completely the opposite and makes me chuckle. As neither of them invented the technique, and the pitting of them against eachother is a media/show business thing, let's just enjoy them both!!

They're all trying to be a Bob Ross, to a degree it seems. Ross had his niche, and it worked for many, many years. Painting tutorials should be just such, tutorials, where the individual who's painting, chooses the best means in which to make the video worth the while of the viewer.

We are discovering where Bob Ross got his mojo from. However Bob Ross's mojo was much more mellow. Alexander is intense and hyper happy. For years I remember the "happy trees" guy, knew it wasn't Ross only and remember him being older, German, excitable and funny. I could not figure out where this guy went or what his name was. Watched the Bob Ross documentary and it's Alexander here!

    • @hebneh

Same exact experience as me. I knew the original guy had a European accent and my joke line imitating him was, "And now you have your happy sky." Until minutes ago, when I watched a TH-cam video about Bob Ross, I had no idea how to track down this man. And now I'm seeing him again.
